Plot: What a great treat to find so many beloved icons in Isaac Julien's excellent documentary about blaxploitation cinema: actors Pam Grier, Fred Williamson, and Gloria Hendry, among others, as well as dir...( read more read more... )ectors Gordon Parks and Melvin Van Peebles. Through their piercing perspectives, plus commentary by the likes of film critic Elvis Mitchell and (of course) cult aficionado and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, Baadasssss Cinema makes a persuasive argument that 1970s blaxploitation was both an American achievement and a temporary fix for Hollywood's then-economic doldrums. Julien gracefully leads viewers on a tour of blaxploitation's aesthetic and social roots, including a desire by African American audiences to see black protagonists stand up to power. Baadasssss Cinema also explains the appeal of warhorse movie genres--gangster films, horror--to the blaxploitation industry, discusses African American ambivalence in the '70s toward the films' new racial stereotypes, and makes sense of blaxploitation's commercial burnout once Hollywood got hold of the formula. --Tom Keogh

A truly interesting look into the brief but productive trend in Hollywood of blaxploitation. They get some really interesting interviews, with the likes of Pam Grier, Fred Williamson, and other big names that were pivotal during this movement. And Quentin Tarantino bursting with all the enthusiasm of a geeky white guy -- man alive I love him, haha.

Examines the films, the affect they had on black society and a lot of the controversy surrounding it all. Really interesting and short watch -- worth the time.

just to get it out of the way i love blaxploitation. i've studied and written about this genre rather extensively and this documentary was definitely a source during my research. i say go see the actual films (or the ones you can find). they are more then just camp in my opinion and this documentary just scratches the surface of the significance of blaxploitation as an emboldened movement rather then just tits and ass. check it out

Seems no one wants to see this documentary, but I'd advise anyone who enjoys and studies film as a whole (even as a spectator) to watch this.

I've seen bits and pieces of several films of this genre off of the television but I found out I had a lot of false asumptions about the genre itself.

The documentary is well done, with interviews from all the stars of these films, as well as a history of the films from the early to mid 1970s and a sociopolitical history.

    Very Interesting.
