You may not understand Bubby, but damn if you won't want to take him home with you -- if only for an hour or so.
-
Anton Bitel, Little White Lies
this dark satire-cum-parable (cling)wraps itself in a quirkily beautiful aesthetic that keeps us watching even when the material is at its most repellent or alarming.

Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
The success of the film is largely due to the bravura performance by Hope.

The miracle of casting; with Bad Boy Bubby, Rolf de Heer plucked Nicholas Hope from obscurity and gave him the role of his acting life
-
Andrew Howe, Film Written Magazine
A memorable, affecting and quietly exceptional tale

Bad Boy Buddy is like Being There without the beauty and The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser but with depravity - It's certainly more Josef Fritzl than Forrest Gump. Though, for all its depravity, disgustingly brutal, awkward and uncomfortable viewing, Bad Boy Buddy is absolutely brilliant. Never has a better argument against corruption been made and nothing is safe - Religion, education, government, fashion - It is all held responsible for societies problems - Buddy actually represents us all, everything is turned on its head but he is actually just like the rest of us. This leads to more uncomfortable viewing in a way but it is quick, witty, raw and has a fantastic Exploitation (or Ozploitation) style, making it a cult classic but also a very debatable film. The ending is quite touching too I thought, so it's worth reminding yourself, manure may stink but it does aid the growth of the rose. I thought it was a great film.

I have to be honest I found it hard to get past the first 10 minutes, I shut it off twice because of the cat scene, then I read a reveiw saying once you get past the first bit of the film, the theme moves forward, but you need to see the first 10 mins to set the storyline.
Defintiely a unique film, with an obvious low budget. There are some really good points and thought provoking moments and then there are the distrubing parts mentioned.
You'll have to make your own mind up on that one!

After being raised with no knowledge of the outside world in a fallout shelter by his abusive, mentally ill mother, middle-aged Bubby is suddenly released into a modern Australian society he can hardly comprehend, but must learn to fit into somehow. An interesting, relentlessly offbeat character study that, despite some disturbing incidents, emerges with a real affection for its subject.

There is something in this film to offend or disgust everyone, including myself. Highly disturbing but done very well. Bad Boy Bubby isn't a perfect film due to its loose structure, it tends to ramble and the director does manage to go a little overboard in some of his excesses, but it is a compelling, funny, occasionally moving and undeniably memorable experience.

I have no idea how to explain this film. It's so very, very wrong! I laughed, and felt guilty for laughing! If you thought the Farrelly brothers were sick, you ain't seen nothing yet!

A startling film, and clearly an influence on the likes of Dogtooth, Bad Boy Bubby is disturbing and troubling but also often very funny. Despite a relentlessly bleak first hour, the film has an optimistic, even humanistic conclusion and a refreshingly positive atheistic philosophy. The final section does drag, it's true, especially some of the band-jam scenes, but Nicholas Hope's performance is extraordinary and how many films can you name that contain incest, horrific abuse, death by cling-film and rape and yet have a decidedly upbeat ending?

This is one truly disturbingly disgusting and yet by far the funniest film that depicted the real and raw Australia, it's so brilliantly scripted. The experimental shots were successful, it's a disturbing version of Rain Man and Forrest Gump Mash with Mr. Bean. I do not recommend anyone to watch this film without being warned, but if you can sit through the first 20 minutes then you can enjoy the rest of the sick film. I love the boundary pushing and dark humour in the film, combining religion symbolism and sexual juxtaposition. The has a strong artistic value that makes the viewers think about the meaning of life and death

I won't tolerate cruelty to animals, so I didn't get past the first 10 minutes. If I missed the greatest film ever made I do not care.
