Kissing cousin in name only to Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant" provides ample scenery-to-chew for Cage in a sort of return to form/gonzo freaky-deaky tour-de-force as a New Orleans cop whose back injury leads to a downward spiral of drug addiction and other forms of debauchery while being promoted to lead a task force into the investigation of a brutal slaying of Senegalese immigrants linked to a drug kingpin. Loosey-goosey filmmaker Werner Herzog stretches the bare-bones yet serviceable script by veteran TV scribe William M. Finkelstein and lets Cage get his ya-yas out (the sole reason to see and an extra * for good measure).

Eva Mendes doesn't have much screen time. I don't know why she's on the movie poster. Wait. Yes I do. There's no use comparing this to the 1992 film called Bad Lieutenant by Abel Ferrara because it's not a remake, not the same film at all.

Herzog doesn't spend a lot of time on t...( read more)hings, which is good, I suppose, because that way we get more Herzog. But then again, if he would have known ahead of time that he was going to get the performance from Nicolas Cage that he got he might have spent a little more time massaging the script and he would have produced a masterpiece. Instead what he gives us is a pretty good movie with a masterpiece performance from Cage. The film comes off as a series of vignettes rather than a smoothly flowing story. A lot of it is rather implausible if you stop and dissect it so maybe a series of hallucinogenic impressions was the only way to go. It's a great film but it's not a masterpiece.

    HAHAHAHA WHAT?

I do hope Herzog is going to come out of this with a big fat check he'll use to make some awesome film because, on its own, this film is more than utterly uninteresting, it is bad in every aspect.

The worse is certainly the script. All the characters are shallow like a Louisiana...( read more) pawn during the Great Dust Bowl. The prima mobile of the copper (pain?) is hardly touched on so Nicolas Cage appears like some sort of senseless zombie.

Very oddly as well, was the fact that the setting is not used actively in the story nor visually. It is really odd to have the name of a city in a film's very title and not to use it at all. This flix could have been shot anywhere from Los Angeles to Charlotte, it would have been the same. Why then set it there instead of the original New York City?

Finally [archtug SPOILER] the end is pathetic. The whole story ends a bit like a cartoon: while everything seemed lost, suddenly out of nowhere everything got settle... ridiculous.

I'm ready to accept that Herzog did it for the money, that the productor butchered the project and that the version released in Europe may have a different ending, But that of out of 2 hours, of film I could barely spot one or two sparkles of intelligence and good film-making from one of my favorite directors on the planet really really really disappointed me.

Nicolas Cage has become an actor that can pick and choose projects at his discretion. And, granted, sometimes his choices are inspired (Adaptation.); and sometimes they're of the pandering kind, (National Treasure 1 & 2). But sometimes, he makes a choice that is so off-the-charts...( read more) that you're left wondering, "What the hell was he thinking?"

This update of the Harvey Keitel-vehicle Bad Lieutenant starts off with great promise. Set against the backdrop of a post-Katrina-battered New Orleans is a great glimpse into a city battered not only by nature, but by the remnants of and rampant violence that existed before the hurricane, and that lingered long afterward.

Unfortunately, our little lieutenant is the epitome of corruption himself. He's a man without scruples who, addicted to most drugs known to man, must take on every criminal in town--just so he can score more crack for himself. He takes on hookers--after he's taken them for himself. He helps fight corruption--after he's made his own back-end deals. He is a hero in the eyes of the community and his department despite the fact that he may very well be high on heroin during his own induction ceremony at City Hall.

There is a big pile of plots and themes that are presented. Some interesting; others not so much. It makes you wish the director would pick a direction and steer you into it. But it doesn't happen. The film is a disjointed jumble of crime-drama clichés from the corrupted cops, to the reformed alcoholics, to the hooker with a heart of gold that our protagonist frequents.

While this is a far cry from Leaving Las Vegas, it makes you wonder what this film would have been like if it had actually been set on The Strip. I, for one, don't think it would have been any better if it had had the same crew and cast involved. The faults can be traced back to the film's uninspired screenplay and the gross underuse and mishandling of its cast. Val Kilmer is a total waste in a role (as the lieutenants partner) that is neither redeeming nor necessary.

And speaking of redemption: there isn't anything that redeems our potty-mouthed, relentlessly ruthless, crack-addicted main character. There is no shred of empathy-inducing characteristics that he possesses. And, just as you realize that this guy is actually the film's villain and he deserves what he has coming--it never comes for him. Ironically--maybe cynically--I think this is the only thing this film got right in depicting: you can do all sorts of bad, bad things and still get away with it.

I mean, this movie did get made after all. So, that must prove my point.

Around this time last year everyone was rejoicing about Mickey Rourke's return to acting in The Wrestler, and this year it looks like it's Nicolas Cage's turn to be praised. Though he's been in the public eye most while making his Hollywood films, for me and most of my friends, ...( read more)Cage was kicking ass back in the days of Wild at Heart, Birdy, Deadfall, Raising Arizona and Vampire's Kiss. Then he won that damned Oscar. Cage was known for making an art form from over-acting, throwing himself totally behind a performance and damn the critics. Probably one of the most exciting actors of the time. Then after Snake Eyes and Leaving Las Vegas it seems he put that acting style behind him and became your average leading male in a motion picture.
Well thank God someone was stupid enough to even consider remaking Abel Ferrara's masterpiece, Bad Lieutenant, and considering Herzog and Cage for the project. Despite what sounded crazy in concept, the film works masterfully. It's a shame the film is being mostly thought of as a dark comedy, it's actually very intelligent and plays with a lot of the themes from the original in a way that the audience wouldn't expect. The film is most comparable to a film I was really disappointed with, The Salton Sea, where I loved the concept behind it, but hated it's execution. Here it works marvelously while taking the "concept" even further. This Bad Lieutenant still examines a sinner in need of redemption, and Herzog goes a completely different direction than the original, but it's a joy to watch. It's a really great companion piece to the original, both have extraordinary performances (though completely different forms of acting), the same themes and the in Herzog's case, is actually a decent "cop" movie too. Hopefully someone is stupid enough to keep this franchise going and we can have another Bad Lieutenant film has the winning combination of cop film and religious drama. Great movie.

This is Cage's best performance in years.

An odd sort of movie. Not bad though, at all.

If there was one adjective that would describe this movie, look no further since it is in the title itself. BAD.

The movie started interestingly. I actually had a few good laughs, thinking that finally, Nicolas Cage has finally ended up with a better project, coming from some re...( read more)ally poor choices such as Bangkok Dangerous, The Wickerman and etc. But this one seem to belong on that list of movies. Well, it's either I just don't get the type of humor this movie was aiming for or it is really badly executed. I just can't keep my eyes open during the movie.
