Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Reviews and Ratings

Might be a good film for people who likes black comedies. Otherwise, for others like me, it gets kind of boring. It's more of a film about a person, not a story.

Wow, this was a very fun film with an excellent performance from Cage. Unlike the "other" BL film I found Cage's character very likeable and amusing and also I was glad that it had the ending I was looking for. This is the sort of Cop-Drama that I find pleasing to watch.

herzog's newest film will never be confused with one of his great masterpieces, but i actually really enjoyed watching this film. nic cage gives the most eccentric performance of his already eccentric career, and the best word to describe the film is "bizarre", but in a good way...( read more). the film was far from perfect with some moments of sub par dialogue and an ending that was way too neat to fit the messy storyline, but overall this is a film i enjoyed.

Nicolas Cage, Shawn Hatosy, Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes, Xzibit

In Werner Herzog?s new film ?The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans,? Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs -- while playing fast and loose with the law. He w...( read more)ields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience.
I am conflicted on how I feel after watching this movie. I guess it's never a good sign when you continuously check to see how much longer the movie has. But I didn't hate the movie either. Just seemed very long, and at times moving at a slow pace. Just seemed like it should have been more fast paced. But, when it did finally end, I do feel like it was a good movie. The whole two hours and one minute is worth sitting through because the ending is genius. Never put one together with the other. So the ending earned major points from me. Nicolas Cage.. What an actor.. He is pure brilliance in this movie. There is no one else that could have pulled this role off like him. There were also some actor's in this movie that I haven't seen in a film in awhile. Like Fairuza Balk and Shawn Hatosy. Eva Mendes character felt a little like her character in "We Own The Night". Or maybe she just portrayed them in the same light. But nothing spectacular there. Val Kilmer really didn't have a lot of screen time, but when he did he made himself known. So I guess my only negative comments is on the length of the movie, or more so the pace. Other then that, good movie and I definitely recommend it.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is one of those movies where when its over, you're not sure if you liked it or hated it; whether it was really good, or really bad. All you know is - you have to see it again. Well, I have watched it again, and I'm no closer to figuring ...( read more)out what the fuck this movie is than I was the first time. I don't know what it all means. I don't know the point of the iguanas, or why Nicholas Cage has an accent for half the flick, or why the last 20 minutes are so surreal it could be a dream sequence. The movie is both brilliant and maddening, insane and trippy, pretentious and lackadaisical, predictable yet wholly original. In short...you won't see another movie like this in 2009, or perhaps any year, and during a time where freshness is a quality lacking in many movies, this alone makes it worth a recommendation.

This probably sounds like damning with faint praise. But make no mistake - I was not bored watching Bad Lieutenant. It's a film you can't take your eyes away from. Mostly this heightened interest is from Nicholas Cage, who's in every scene of the film and basically represents both the best and worst forms of acting he's displayed in his career. "Over the top" doesn't even begin to describe this performance. He thrashes, he gnashes, he smokes and snorts and laughs and fucks and slaps and shoots his way until eventually, the movie ends. Catharsis? The only redemption here is so hollow and seems so purposefully contrived, it HAS to be fake/"all a dream" (if this finale had been placed with the director's aggravation, everyone would be lamenting the studio fucking with a director's vision - but instead, Werner Herzog has gone on record saying he wanted the ending to be a hilarious depiction of descending to Hell, so now it's all deemed brilliant - remember the finale of Taxi Driver, and that's what we get here). Whatever the purpose of this character's arc, I can certainly say that Cage gives it his all, and goes for broke. It's an impressive and shocking performance.

And the rest of the movie basically revolves around that - and also Herzog's camera, if you notice that kind of thing in the movies. I love the way he moves his camera, pulling in and out and around in ways I would never have thought of. It's a perfectly shot film, helped by having a very intrusive musical score by Mark Isham (also on purpose, though, and also therefore kinda cool). But I'm just not sure what to make of it all. The script has some really great moments; Cage going ape shit in a drug store, the now infamous Iguana scene, or the even more peculiar moment where a man is shot and then Cage says his "soul is still dancing', and we see a younger version of that character breakdancing around to the sounds of a banjo. But there's a lot of stuff, too, that just doesn't work. The script has some dialogue clunkers. Cage's relationship with Eva Mendes doesn't really go anywhere, and a lot of the subplots manifested from his "badness" (like the trouble he gets in with two old ladies in a retirement home), aren't satisfactorily dealt with. But then, I get the feeling this was all part of the point - that Herzog and his writers were trying to say something about the nature of most cop movies by making it so bizarre and twisted and, essentially, such a mess. If that's the case, then good for them - but I sure don't fucking know what the point was.

My biggest complaint would perhaps be the comparison to the first film. Other than the title and the fact that the main character is a drug addicted and power hungry cop, there's no relation to the 1992 Abel Ferrara movie (he's also a lot better behaved in this version, if you can believe it). Maybe this is just as well. But that film had a strong power to it, a religious urgency brought about by the heavy Catholic stuff in the film. Here, the Bad Lieutenant doesn't give a shit about religion, and I think that's missing something that was really important and pivotal in the first film. But whatever. Port of Call: New Orleans is still a fascinating flick, one that narrowly sidesteps being a masterpiece - but one that also barely misses being a total disaster. If you're open to very different types of filmmaking, then you owe it to yourself to see this flick. If not, then steer clear.

I *love* Nicolas Cage but this movie was totally meaningless to me....:(((
  • December 20, 2009
It's not totally a remake of the 1992 Abel Ferrara film starring Harvey Keitel. But this Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" is another to watch out for.

Nicholas Cage is Lt. Terrence McDonagh, Jr. a city police officer. He uses drugs as prescribed, But he...( read more) got into the medication so high that it instantly becomes his addiction. Drugs is his natural pacifier; and he depends on cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.

Lt. McDonagh is awarded with a recognition for his dedication for work at the beginning of the film. He stands and delivers his speech. But things go wrong as we watch him through the end. He does his job, yes, because he's a police. But what others don't realize is that he does things other than being a good cop, and that's being bad. He deals drugs, he uses them, he manically perverts women, he scares and blackmails people. Summing up all of his violations as a police officer, ten years of imprisonment might not be enough to pay for his wrong doings.

Nicholas Cage has just given a quite exceptional performance in this film. Two of his films are my favorites for this year, Bad Lieutenant and Knowing. In Bad Lieutenant, he has just defined what a great character acting is about. it's about taking the risk and being able to extract the essence of each single scene. At first, i was doubtful about putting him on the main role; because he might be too soft or might have the tendency to become soft.Basically, the bad lieutenant role requires a professional actor to portray, because of the complexity of its character and ego. That, Cage did not fail, he has made the film an asset for the industry.

I also has this big two thumbs up for the Harvey Keitel portrayal of the bad cop. He is intense in the 1992 film which jives totally appreciable and commendable.

Werner Herzog's abrupt shift from philosophical and sophisticated German films, and documentaries and shorts to a strong American semi-gangster film is one to be critical about. He has just proven how versatile his directing is. He is one of few directors that make such good films even if he's gone old doing same things as he did before.

The challenge of this film is tough, but the job is well done. The artistic sense of the people behind this film makes it one of the best films of the year, for me. I catch myself laughing at times, and the excitement it retracts is way fun.

    REVIEW

Kissing cousin in name only to Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant" provides ample scenery-to-chew for Cage in a sort of return to form/gonzo freaky-deaky tour-de-force as a New Orleans cop whose back injury leads to a downward spiral of drug addiction and other forms of debauchery while being promoted to lead a task force into the investigation of a brutal slaying of Senegalese immigrants linked to a drug kingpin. Loosey-goosey filmmaker Werner Herzog stretches the bare-bones yet serviceable script by veteran TV scribe William M. Finkelstein and lets Cage get his ya-yas out (the sole reason to see and an extra * for good measure).

Eva Mendes doesn't have much screen time. I don't know why she's on the movie poster. Wait. Yes I do. There's no use comparing this to the 1992 film called Bad Lieutenant by Abel Ferrara because it's not a remake, not the same film at all.

Herzog doesn't spend a lot of time on t...( read more)hings, which is good, I suppose, because that way we get more Herzog. But then again, if he would have known ahead of time that he was going to get the performance from Nicolas Cage that he got he might have spent a little more time massaging the script and he would have produced a masterpiece. Instead what he gives us is a pretty good movie with a masterpiece performance from Cage. The film comes off as a series of vignettes rather than a smoothly flowing story. A lot of it is rather implausible if you stop and dissect it so maybe a series of hallucinogenic impressions was the only way to go. It's a great film but it's not a masterpiece.

Around this time last year everyone was rejoicing about Mickey Rourke's return to acting in The Wrestler, and this year it looks like it's Nicolas Cage's turn to be praised. Though he's been in the public eye most while making his Hollywood films, for me and most of my friends, ...( read more)Cage was kicking ass back in the days of Wild at Heart, Birdy, Deadfall, Raising Arizona and Vampire's Kiss. Then he won that damned Oscar. Cage was known for making an art form from over-acting, throwing himself totally behind a performance and damn the critics. Probably one of the most exciting actors of the time. Then after Snake Eyes and Leaving Las Vegas it seems he put that acting style behind him and became your average leading male in a motion picture.
Well thank God someone was stupid enough to even consider remaking Abel Ferrara's masterpiece, Bad Lieutenant, and considering Herzog and Cage for the project. Despite what sounded crazy in concept, the film works masterfully. It's a shame the film is being mostly thought of as a dark comedy, it's actually very intelligent and plays with a lot of the themes from the original in a way that the audience wouldn't expect. The film is most comparable to a film I was really disappointed with, The Salton Sea, where I loved the concept behind it, but hated it's execution. Here it works marvelously while taking the "concept" even further. This Bad Lieutenant still examines a sinner in need of redemption, and Herzog goes a completely different direction than the original, but it's a joy to watch. It's a really great companion piece to the original, both have extraordinary performances (though completely different forms of acting), the same themes and the in Herzog's case, is actually a decent "cop" movie too. Hopefully someone is stupid enough to keep this franchise going and we can have another Bad Lieutenant film has the winning combination of cop film and religious drama. Great movie.

I do hope Herzog is going to come out of this with a big fat check he'll use to make some awesome film because, on its own, this film is more than utterly uninteresting, it is bad in every aspect.

The worse is certainly the script. All the characters are shallow like a Louisiana...( read more) pawn during the Great Dust Bowl. The prima mobile of the copper (pain?) is hardly touched on so Nicolas Cage appears like some sort of senseless zombie.

Very oddly as well, was the fact that the setting is not used actively in the story nor visually. It is really odd to have the name of a city in a film's very title and not to use it at all. This flix could have been shot anywhere from Los Angeles to Charlotte, it would have been the same. Why then set it there instead of the original New York City?

Finally [archtug SPOILER] the end is pathetic. The whole story ends a bit like a cartoon: while everything seemed lost, suddenly out of nowhere everything got settle... ridiculous.

I'm ready to accept that Herzog did it for the money, that the productor butchered the project and that the version released in Europe may have a different ending, But that of out of 2 hours, of film I could barely spot one or two sparkles of intelligence and good film-making from one of my favorite directors on the planet really really really disappointed me.

Nicolas Cage has become an actor that can pick and choose projects at his discretion. And, granted, sometimes his choices are inspired (Adaptation.); and sometimes they're of the pandering kind, (National Treasure 1 & 2). But sometimes, he makes a choice that is so off-the-charts...( read more) that you're left wondering, "What the hell was he thinking?"

This update of the Harvey Keitel-vehicle Bad Lieutenant starts off with great promise. Set against the backdrop of a post-Katrina-battered New Orleans is a great glimpse into a city battered not only by nature, but by the remnants of and rampant violence that existed before the hurricane, and that lingered long afterward.

Unfortunately, our little lieutenant is the epitome of corruption himself. He's a man without scruples who, addicted to most drugs known to man, must take on every criminal in town--just so he can score more crack for himself. He takes on hookers--after he's taken them for himself. He helps fight corruption--after he's made his own back-end deals. He is a hero in the eyes of the community and his department despite the fact that he may very well be high on heroin during his own induction ceremony at City Hall.

There is a big pile of plots and themes that are presented. Some interesting; others not so much. It makes you wish the director would pick a direction and steer you into it. But it doesn't happen. The film is a disjointed jumble of crime-drama clichés from the corrupted cops, to the reformed alcoholics, to the hooker with a heart of gold that our protagonist frequents.

While this is a far cry from Leaving Las Vegas, it makes you wonder what this film would have been like if it had actually been set on The Strip. I, for one, don't think it would have been any better if it had had the same crew and cast involved. The faults can be traced back to the film's uninspired screenplay and the gross underuse and mishandling of its cast. Val Kilmer is a total waste in a role (as the lieutenants partner) that is neither redeeming nor necessary.

And speaking of redemption: there isn't anything that redeems our potty-mouthed, relentlessly ruthless, crack-addicted main character. There is no shred of empathy-inducing characteristics that he possesses. And, just as you realize that this guy is actually the film's villain and he deserves what he has coming--it never comes for him. Ironically--maybe cynically--I think this is the only thing this film got right in depicting: you can do all sorts of bad, bad things and still get away with it.

I mean, this movie did get made after all. So, that must prove my point.

Although Nicolas Cage has made some... peculiar... choices in his acting career, you can still count on him to deliver a great performance with a meaty role every couple of years. There was "Adaptation" in 2002, "The Weather Man" in 2005, and now we have his latest great performa...( read more)nce in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans". Where this role differs, however, is that Cage is pretty much up to the same schtick that he brought to the table in efforts like "The Wicker Man". He's preposterous and completely over-the-top. An actor with so little restraint, however, is the perfect fit for a film by one of cinema's greatest eccentrics (and, I would argue, one of our greatest living directors), Werner Herzog.

Cage plays Terence McDonagh, a New Orleans detective who, in the films opening sequence, injures his back in the process of saving a prisoner from Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters. Heroic this was not, however, as McDonagh was initially perfectly content with keeping his swiss-cotton underpants in tact.

The back injury leads to Vicodin, the Vicodin leads to cocaine, and before you know it McDonagh is raping young girls, aiming guns at elderly nurses, and hallucinating break-dancing souls. The film, to make the understatement of the decade, is wild, and most peculiarly is how Herzog chooses to set this lunacy in a completely naturalistic environment. He appears to be playing it straight, even when we take a brief interlude to get the point-of-view of a hallucinated reptile.

Where the film suffers is in the actual police procedural subplot. The murder investigation is not of much interest - it's so dull, in fact, that it distracts from the film's central relationships. The lack of restraint by both Cage and Herzog, on the other hand, will thwart your efforts of completely losing interest.

Herzog's latest is a terrific mess of a film, a piece so delightfully obscene that you quite literally need to see it to believe it. It may not all work, but lesser Herzog still displays more audacity and invention than just about anything else at your local multiplex.

A remake of a heavy early 90s cop drama starring Harvey Keitel into a dark comedy with Nicolas Cage in the lead and directed by W...( read more)erner Herzog. While the film does a good enough job balancing a lot of weirdness, Cage certainly gives his best performance in years, even if its not close to Keitel.

The main character here is Terrence McDonagh, played by Cage, a New Orleans Police sergeant, who starts out as a good cop, receiving a medal and a promotion to lieutenant for heroism during Hurricane Katrina. During his heroic act, McDonagh injures his back and later becomes addicted to prescription pain medication, leading to many more hardcore drugs, and eventually just basic corruption as a police officer, taking advantage of women, stealing evidence, and continuing to do drugs, although he does do well as an officer. McDonagh struggles with addictions and finds himself involved with drug dealer Big Fate, played by Xzibit, who is suspected of murdering a family of African immigrants. As the story goes on, McDonagh has to deal with more and more issues involving the case, his gambling habits, and issues with his prostitute girlfriend Frankie, played by Eva Mendes.

To get this out of the way, even if I think the first film is very good, but not great, Keitel's performance is among the best performances that I have seen in film. That being said, Cage does a very good job here. He is in complete big bug eyes crazy mode that works in the same way it worked for him in Matchstick Men. As this film progresses and Cage's vices continue to get the better of him, he gets crazier and crazier, with hints of paranoia, and he is still sharp with his cop skills. Its a damn good role for him.

Also fairing well are a number of supporting characters. Eva Mendes as his junkie girlfriend works. Val Kilmer is underplaying it well enough where you get just enough to make you want more of him. Xzibit is surprisingly effective. Best of all is Jennifer Coolidge, who many know as Stifler's mom, who following those 'Pie' films has been getting a lot of really goofy and stupid roles. Here she is actually in a legitmate role as Cage's father's alcoholic girlfriend and does a very good job.

Assuming one is still involved with the film, forgiving a lot of the craziness that occurs, much of the problems I had came from the end, where, without going into spoilers, seems to deliver in ways that aren't deserved. I could have used more score as well.

Setting the film in post-Katrina New Orleans works very well. Not focusing on the glitz and going with the real side of things. Moving the film here and out of New York as in the original film goes a long way in separating the two.

Overall, its a strange sort of cop film with very good performances.

Terence McDonagh: Its amazing how much you can get done when you have a simple purpose driving you.
