Christopher Walken, Dan Fogler, George Lopez

In the unsanctioned, underground, and unhinged world of extreme Ping-Pong, the competition is brutal and the stakes are deadly. Now, this outrageous new comedy serves up this secret world for the firs...( read more  read more... )t time on-screen. Down-and-out former professional Ping-Pong phenom Randy Daytona (Tony Award winner Dan Fogler) is sucked into this maelstrom when FBI Agent Rodriguez (George Lopez) recruits him for a secret mission. Randy is determined to bounce back and recapture his former glory, and to smoke out his father’s (Robert Patrick) killer – one of the FBI’s Most Wanted, arch-fiend Feng (Academy Award winner Christopher Walken). But, after two decades out of the game, Randy can’t turn his life around and avenge his father’s murder without a team of his own. He calls upon the spiritual guidance of blind Ping-Pong sage and restaurateur Wong (James Hong), and the training expertise of Master Wong’s wildly sexy niece Maggie (Maggie Q), both of whom also have a dark history with Feng. All roads lead to Feng’s mysterious jungle compound and the most unique Ping-Pong tournaments ever staged. There, Randy faces such formidable players as his long-ago Olympics opponent, the still-vicious Karl Wolfschtagg (Thomas Lennon). Can Randy keep his eye on the ball? Will he achieve the redemption he craves while wielding a paddle? Is his backhand strong enough to triumph over rampant wickedness?

sometimes funny, some times dull. I expected more out of Christopher Walken. Seemed to me that the real funny people in this movie were the supporting actors.

"A huge comedy with tiny balls"

A disgraced former ping pong champion is drawn back into the world of high-stakes table tennis to carry out a top-secret mission in the feature directorial debut of Reno 911! writer/director Ben Garant. Far removed from the rigidly regulate...( read more)d world of professional sports, clandestine ping pong tournaments offer thrilling competition where only the strong survive. There was a time when the mere mention of the name Randy Daytona (Dan Fogler) was enough to make even those most hardened ping pong player cower in fear, but these days Randy has fallen out of favor with ping-pong fans. The former champ soon receives a much-needed shot at redemption, however, when he is recruited by a determined FBI agent named Rodriguez (George Lopez) to win a coveted spot in the upcoming underground table tennis tournament and ferret out the nefarious Feng (Christopher Walken), whose thriving criminal empire has transformed him into a true menace to society.

There is absolutely no salvation for this abomination of comedic film. It's not even so stupid it's funny, its just really stupid. Thomas Lennon (Lt. Dangle from Reno 911) is just about the only character with any humor. The blind guy has no funny parts either, you basically have to force yourself to laugh. The main character is as drab as he is two-dimensional. This was an opportunity to be a good film, but it just doesn't even come close. Christopher Walken has once again embarrassed himself, not for being bad, for continually appearing in third rate films. He has never turned down a movie offer, and I respect that, but could he just stop doing things like this? There are only two positives in this movie, Maggie Q is hot, and Thomas Lennon's performance, other than that, it's basically worse than Gigli.

A so-so spoof film of many different martial arts films from Karate Kid, Kickboxer and mainly Enter the Dragon. It has it moments, but unless you are a fan of spoof films or martial arts films it pokes fun at you might not like it. Maggie Q does well in her role though.

PRETTY FUNNY THROUGHOUT, BUT THE COMEDY COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. THIS IS STILL WORTH WATCHING THOUGH
  • November 15, 2009
Innocuous, inoffensive "comedy" about a former ping pong whiz kid who grows up to be a pudgy orphan working the Reno casinos with ping pong trickery to pay rent. He gets approached by an FBI agent (George Lopez) to infiltrate a ping pong tournament ("sudden death" takes on a new ...( read more)meaning here) at the secret hideaway (in Central America) of the mysterious Feng (Christopher Walken, in the only flat-out laugh-inducing role in the film) and falls for his trainer's (James Hong, above this) daughter (Maggie Q). Silly, stupid, but watchable. Co-written by Thomas Lennon, who appears here fresh from RENO 9-1-1: MIAMI - THE MOVIE (the adaptation of his Comedy Central TV show), but never living up to the absurd humor of that series.

Could a movie that mixes table tennis, spies and kung-fu action star anyone else but Christopher Walken? Probably not. full review

While Balls of Fury is slightly more sophisticated in its comic strategies, 'slightly' remains the operative word. full review

Ultimately, it's a hollow enterprise, all ping and no pong. It doesn't bounce; it splats. full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

It's schlocky and tasteless but also good-natured and harmless, and the people who come out to see it will get just what they want: 90 minutes of freewheeling, switch-off-your-brain laughs. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Don't expect me to explain the rules and purposes of the tournament, if it has any. I was preoccupied with observing the sheer absurdity of everything on the screen... full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

The gags are either obvious, lame, ineptly timed or repeated so many times as to render them devoid of humor. full review

Balls of Fury is raunchier and somewhat more imaginative than Hot Rod, and it will be must viewing for Christopher Walken completists.

I knew this was going to be a bad film that I didn't want to see, but I was forced into watching it. I have to tell you I was shocked that the beginning of the film was good and made you laugh. I thought It would keep going that way. I was wrong.. Up to the point where you get to Christopher Walken's character it all goes DOWN HILL. They should have not had him in the film because he just didn't fit at all well with the other cast. So if you watch this the first half is good and the middle and last parts of the movie are beyond boring. Dan Fogler who plays the main character boy and George Lopez are the best thing about this movie to watch.. oh yea and that girl from "Reno 911" on Comedy Central whom I adore has a small role too. 1 1/2 star
