She's about to depart for college, and when she tells her surgeon father that she intends to study poetry rather than medicine, he insists that she stick with the sciences. Feeling as if there's no way out of her predicament, Lucille rifles through her father's lab and attempts suicide. But her efforts end in failure, leaving her with third degree burns on her face, and tissue loss around her cheek and nose. Desperate to treat Lucille but unwilling to take her to the hospital, her father hires a private nurse to watch over her around the clock.
