In 1992, Basic Instinct established Sharon Stone as a psychosexual superstar and, not incidentally, ?fuck of the century?. A decade-and-a-half on, in a new century, here?s a London-set sequel. Paul Verhoeven, whose overkill sold the first movie?s silly story, is replaced by the measured, considered Michael Caton-Jones. And the dim, horny, out-of-control cop played by Michael Douglas (whose fate is sadly not revealed) gives way to a smart, icy, control-freak psychiatrist played by the luckless David Morrissey.

Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas isn?t getting huge paydays for rejigging Jagged Edge any more and this new (if distinctly familiar) script is crafted by Leora Barish (Desperately Seeking Susan) and Henry Bean (The Believer, Deep Cover, Internal Affairs). A while back, when David Cronenberg was set to direct, the Basic Instinct 2 script got a buzz as being cleverer, deeper, sharper and sexier than the original (which, given the writers? track record, is credible). Somewhere in years of development (many directors and co-stars were mooted), it must have been rewritten too many times, because this is a bland, silly, play-by-play redo of Basic Instinct without even the original?s Gothic, over-the-top bravado. And, no, there?s no scene here that will get as much attention as the underwear-free police interrogation of 1992 ? even if Caton-Jones does riff on his own backlist by having Stone pose in one shrink session like Joanne Whalley as Christine Keeler in the poster for his movie Scandal.

There ought to have been a way to do more with the fascinating, ambiguous Catherine Tramell, but Basic Instinct 2 just reprises her previous act, as a professional man gets unwisely involved and squirms deeper and deeper into her trap as he?s set up to take several nasty falls. Elsewhere, good British actors (David Thewlis, Charlotte Rampling) are laden with duff lines (Thewlis? Welsh-accented delivery of, ?I want that cunt in jail? is priceless) and footballer Stan Collymore gets drowned.

There is one clever variation on the original?s action as Dr. Glass snoops around a ladies? loo in a Soho club, driven by moans coming from a stall to suspect he?s about to catch Catherine in a girl-on-girl clinch with his ex-wife (Indira Varma), only to receive a nasty, very different surprise. Otherwise, you?ve been here before when it was fresher.

this was actually better than i thought it would be. Different ending from the first thought that was really good like but a different plot through the whole film.

I was bored on the 4th, I redeem myself somehow right BUT it was not that bad...expecting a terrible mess it was actually pretty good, Stone doing her best femme fatale portrayal as Trammel that woman has balls, maybe that is why such a uproar was made in the 90's about the first part because a sucessful woman fornicating, doing drugs, engaging in fetish fantasies and being in control of her own life and telling everyone to fuck off, well the same persona is back although this time is worse. In BI1 Trammel murdered the chaos ended for the poor victim there but this time she is puts a trance over her victim and jails him inside his desire and curiosity until it reality comes crashing down. This time the feel was not so raunchy as BI1, this one was actually a "psychological thriller" with gratious sex acts of course.

THe film ending was a little bit of a let down so I am of course cutting the film where I wanted it to end...that is the Trammel in me...

apparently "basic instint2" is far from its ancestor, a legend built by the trio of michael douglas, paul verhoeven and of course sharon stone. but in a way, it is slightly underrated. most people overlook one thing: it is a campy parody of the original basic instinct despite campiness is not what ambitious sharon stone expects from her cinematic comeback.

the story goes like this: catherine trammel (stone) is the criminal novelist who lives on verge of adrenal stimulations of blood-thirsty promiscuity. now she is accused of intentionally drowning a black sportsman inside the car while they're having sex. to rinse off her suspicious spot, she's got to consult a psychiatrist for her mental diagnosis. but now she is entrapping her psychiatrist into a snare of murders and jealousy. spoiler: she maliciously drives him into schizod insanity.

first of all, none of the characters in "basic instint 2" are realistic in flesh and blood, the most contrived charater is undoubtedly stone's catherine trammel who could survive from a high-speed automobile crash while she is having orgasm with a stoned black sportsman. and her mere comment to the police interrogation would be "oh! i'm so traumatized that i'm afraid i can't cum!" which is also an outrageous one-liner with the almighty witch attitude. second of all, the psychiatrist played by david morrissey is wimpish and easy to manipulate. let's put it this way, morrissey is no volcanically masculine michael douglas (when he was young) to emulate a burgeoning fresh-faced sharon stone (again, when she was young!) what's the fun to watch a gender guerilla when you're already aware who's gonna win? in the original, you cannot help but wonder if the dubious hard-boiled copper could tame this snobbish tramp in the end, and their sex looks thrilling with titilating animosity. but now morrissey's psychiatrist is a masturbator who peeks at trammel's picture while he's having intercourse. laughable? i guess so.

it is a dreadfully tiresome caricature of feminism, and it also reflects men's misogynism toward the self-conceited blonde who is mannishly castrative, destined to scatter doom upon men. and her victim is also the grotesque of such fatal attractions, broadcasting the cliche that the evil blonde woman is not to be trusted.

in the original, stone flashes her crotch for a second while her hair is combed behind with lofty poise under a white robe, lighting off a cigarette. that is a stylistically cool image of dominatrix. undeniably verhoeven chooses style over substance, but at least it's a sheer icy-cold style with higher class. now in its inferior sequel, stone's wardrobe seems like being inspired by samatha in "sex and the city", the urbanite sex-hungry tigress looks with the sluttish bang despite stone still remains physically attractive in her middle age. but the sexuality is rendered tastelessly blatant without a bit of subtlety that you could sense while she opens her crotch (again!) behind the chair, uttering crass lines like i know you wanna do me, and i may wanna do you, too.

eventually "basic instinct 2" also exploits the frequently devised plot gimmick in contemporary cinema when scriptors run out of ideas to write: schizophreniac. ignore its obivious flaws and appreciate them as the camp, "basic instinct 2" would be an entertaining trash novel you read to kill time in the airport, a classic CAMP.

Sharon Stone has a great body still and that is the only highlight of the film, the countless sex scenes.

Sharon Stone was too old and haggard looking to play the part of a femme fatale. Acting was horrible all around. You can tell this one was just made for the money.

One of the least-anticipated sequels of recent years, Basic Instinct 2 is a movie that falls squarely into so-bad-it's-good territory -- or perhaps, so-bad-it's-still-pretty-bad.

Only the sheer ludicrousness of the plot keeps this one from being a total washout.

I was expecting mayor suckiness from this movie, now that I watched it I found out that everything said about it it's true. It has a pretty good storyline (specially at the end) but the acting sucks BIG time. I know Sharon Stone is suposed to be super hot, but her faces and dialogues are pretty ridiculous. The ending totally confused me, they should have put more information on the who killied who, because I still have no idea. Michael Douglas was pretty smart to pass on this movie

Took me a while to get around to seeing this. Didnt really like the fact it was obviously not going to have Michael Douglas in it. But it really did again have a great storyline with twists.

Nobody seems to like this film calling it simply embaressing is close but not quite the remark I think of when seeing this film. Its a decent censored thriller, but all over the place, easy to pick up on.

Barely qualifying as an erotic thriller and filled with way too many red herrings and switcheroos, this one misses the mark almost completely.

Pass, or catch it while bored on cable like I did.

Aside from Sharon Stone ofcourse the movie was absoulety pure crap. The plot was very unenjoyable and David Morrissey was awful in the movie. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS AWFUL! I was truly disspointed

When you hear that there's going to be a sequel to a movie like Basic Instinct, the first thing that comes to mind is 'how much smutty, dirty and downright indecent sex will they try to get away with this time?' Well, the answer is 'Not a whole hell of a lot'. Actually, when compared to the original flick... this is Sesame Street! Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) is in trouble with the law again, this time in England, and gets involved with her court appointed shrink. Lots of manipulation and sex type stuff happens. Well, we get to see Granny Sharon show off all the liver spots on her breasts once, well, one and a half times, and that's all she wrote. The movie is pretty uneventful for the most part, actually it's pretty boring. Sure it's got a cool twist in the finale, and it's left open for debate as to what actually happened, but it's just not Basic Instinct if it doesn't make you feel dirty after watching it. It's not a bad movie (even though it has it's fair share of crap dialogue like "Even Oedipus didn't see his Mother coming" ugh), but it's just totally underwhelming. At least it looks good.

I'm a lover of sexy older women but for whatever purpose they made this movie, i was not the less bit impressed. Seeing Sharon Stone in this movie made me feel bad for her. It felt to me that she was forced to do this, when a TV movie would have been 80 times better for her career. You can only spread your legs so many times for the camera and give the world a hard-on. Just my thoughts.

I don't care what anyone says, this movie is better then alot of the crap out recently. Its Basic Instinct for the 21st century. Sharon Stone gives one of her few great performances and plot is better then expected. And we don't have to see Michael Douglas's saggy old man ass

They made a great sequel unique as a new movie ans so sexy and suspenseful as the first one. David Morrissey gives an Oscar worthy performance as doin a mix of different emotions in seconds. Wow he was great.
