Ridiculous Low-budget 1980's comedy/horror classic. So bad its excellent!

Another shining example of terrible cinema gone horribly right, Basket Case is a trashy, campy piece of '80s exploitation gold. The story is ridiculous, the acting is terrible, the effects are cheesy, but still the film manages to be extremely original and interesting, and actua...( read more)lly carries a semi-intelligent message about society's views of deformity and ugliness. Of course, it's in no way high art (this is the bottom of the sleaze barrel) but it's gratuitous, bizarre, and - most importantly - entertaining.

One of the most disappointing films I watched in the 80s as a horror fan. It isn't much of a horror film at all and is much more like a comedy. The trouble is that I can't tell if the comedy is intentional or not. If it was supposed to be serious then it really failed abysmally.

Gruesome but famous low-budget horror flick. I've tried watching several times and could never enjoy it.

This is a good example of what can be done with a little budget and a lot of creativity. Granted, the acting and editing aren't exactly "Citizen Kane", but what did you expect? The dialog matched with the over-the-top acting makes for an entertaining gore fest, and no one takes e...( read more)verything too seriously. However, the high points of the film are the murder scenes. Belial is nothing more than a body with soldiers who jumps out of his basket onto his victims and proceeds to rip their flesh to shreds. The gore is cheaply done but glorious nonetheless. As for Belial's movements, the effects director employed stop motion to do the trick, and seeing this little mutant scurry around the floor is a sight to behold. The creature effects are a mixture of stop motion, puppetry, and a guy in a suit. They're not exactly great, but are entertaining and innovative.

One of the reasons why this film is so enduring are the sets. For some of us later generation exploitation fans, we only hear about 42nd street through legend. The locations in the film really seem to capture the sleazy atmosphere of the Deuce effectively. Its not a perfect cult film. For one, the rape sequence is in bad taste, even for an exploitation film and really clashes with the light hearted tone up to that point. Still this is a film entirely deserving of its cult reputation

This may be one of my favourite 80's horror movies. Super campy, quite low budget and great gore.

This is so bad its almost brilliant! I must admit i so love cheesy horror movies from the 80´s. The special effects, the script and mostly the acting are beautifully awful. A must see . The scene when he´s smelling the underpants its just a classic

If you haven't watched Frank Henenlotters films you are missing out on real cinema! No one makes them like Frank makes them! I call this movie the last great exploitation film. This is a shoe string budget film made by a man that loves the non mainstream. Two brothers hole up in...( read more) a seedy hotel in New York so they can find and kill the doctors that seperated them at a young age. Yes they are siamese twins and Dewayne Bradley totes his brother Belial Bradley around in a basket until he wants to come out and play with the doctors that sliced him off his brothers side. This movie is a wonderful piece of cinema that still to this day shows up the mega budget Hollywood trash that is forced down our throat. If you think this movie can get no better it stars the beautiful and talented Beverly Bonner who appears in all of Franks films. This film made me a monster at a young age and has never left me.
