Every time I think about the climactic event near the end of the movie, coupled with the mother's ultimate reaction, it burns me the hell up. But I suppose eliciting an emotional response is what a film like this sets out to do in the first place, and in that, it succeeds.
A very good movie..I even have the book. Its really sad the fact that this girl went through so much pain and the mom rarely did anything about it. At the end that dirty guy got what he deserved.
Anjelica Huston is the director and this is her first attempt at directing a feature length movie. The results are stunning. It is altogether a flawless movie, with an excellent script based on the Dorothy Allison novel. Ron Eldard is excellent in his depiction Glen, expertly capturing the character's pathetic childishness behind those icy blue eyes. Eldard often seems to play characters with a dark side and this role plays to his strengths, even if his southern accent slips from time to time. His scenes of violence with Bone are harrowing to watch and you can't help but feel uncomfortable, given the age of Jena Malone at the time. Special mention must go to Jena Malone for her sophisticated, passionate portrayal of Anney's young daughter, 'Bone'. Bone carries the weight of her mother's world on her shoulders. This is her first major role to speak of and she carries the movie effortlessly.
I watched this one time and can't watch it again....just because it was so heartbreaking it is a good movie....it's about a little girl who's mother takes in an a busive man for a boyfriend...and he end ups abusing her older daughter.
This movie kept me at the edge of my seat... I get into certain movies for it's story and theme, and this is one of them. Anjelica Huston refrained from censoring anything about this movie.. which shows the true horror of incest and violence.. The only thing that bothered me a little about this film is that it could have been done in a more creative way.
There's some wonderful acting here. This movie focuses on a girl's painful childhood sexual abuse by her stepfather, about which the mother is in serious denial. Jennifer Jason Leigh again knows how to portray insecure desparation. A very young Jena Malone scarily performs so bravely in these very violent, physical scenes. I love this movie, but my heart can't take watching it ever again.
this is a Excellant movie ! its about this womans boyfriend, Molesting her child behind her back. he gets the Crap beat out of him at the end, by family members , who see the bruising on the little girls legs and body. She is so badly abusedn from this man, it is Very sad. this is a must see movie for everyone.
this movie made me curse out loud...throwing things at the t.v., i started crying when the girl couldn't walk...i forget whether she dies/leaves...or what..i need to watch it again...this is a MUST SEE
This is such a hard movie to watch. There are some horrible scenes with the little girl being raped and molested. Hearing her cry is just too much. I cannot watch this movie.
i love this movie. i hate the man that beats the child but i just cant believe the mom still going to stay with him. so it is like she is chosing the man over her on daughter
This is one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. The story tells us of young Bone, a Carolina bastard who, when her mother remarries, gets abused - both physically and sexually - by the new man in their lives. Bone is portrayed by Jena Malone who is so convincing in the part it's almost scary. She is such a good actress and I read somewhere that when Jodie Foster was asked if there was any child star today that had the potential to reach the same results she had in her career, she mentioned Jena Malone and Dakota Fanning. I can but agree.
Throughout the movie one experiences every emotion there is - anger, sadness and the occasional happiness. And when Bone is hurting, one hurts right along side her, when she cries, one cries. And the anger, well, the anger arises when her mother, torn between her husband and child, never really takes a stand and protects her baby fully.
But, again, so powerful and a movie that has me in tears for just about the whole thing (cried like crazy ? and constantly - for the last ten minutes, never knew I had so many tears) deserves nothing less than a big, fat FIVE. If I could, I'd have given it a ten...
this movies was so sad and so deep, but wow it was powerful who ever that little girl is she should get in oscar for even have the courage to do a scene like that.
I really can't watch this movie but I've seen quite a bit of it, maybe all of it but in bits and pieces. Good acting from all players but tough material and it may not be for everyone. Jena Malone was wonderful in her role of the abused girl.
Not my first choice for a flick, but my then gf wanted to see it...Deeply disturbing movie, makes you want to go through the TV and kick someones @ss.....
