Plot:
Adventures of the caped crusader, stressing the relationship between Batman and his adversary The Joker.
I really enjoy this version of Batman. At first I wasnt too happy that Michael Keaton was casted as Batman but damn did he pulled it off. Thats right I said DAMN!
A fantastic and grippingly entertaining film. The highlight is definitely 'the Joker'. Jack Nicholson portrays him brilliantly, with the relaxed and eerie persona he put in to his role.
Throughout the film ,there are several memorable moments, mainly from Batman, and of course, the Joker. Great one-liners, and on screen comedy.
Highly recommended.
"Batman" stands as an example of how to make a great comic book film. Above all, the film is just oozing with atmosphere, and "Batman"'s look is undoubtedly its #1 strength. However, it also has some thrilling action sequences, a terrific villain (perhaps too good- see below), and, most importantly, a good man in the Batman suit.
The film belongs to Jack Nicholson- he is probably the real main character of this movie. He makes the Joker both a funny and menacing character, and he gets all of the best lines. This was a role Nicholson was born to play, and he enjoys it with relish.
Michael Keaton was the best Batman, in my opinion. OK, so he is a little short, but no one else played the Bruce Wayne part better than he did. He makes this a Batman to root for. If only we saw more of him...
Which brings me to the film's main flaw- this is the Joker's film the entire way, not Batman's. Why the filmakers decided to do this I don't completely understand, but it takes away something from the film. We never really get to bond with the superhero in this one (this was somewhat remedied in "Batman Returns"). Also, Kim Basinger's character is mainly eye candy and pales in comparison to future Batman girlfriends.
Nevertheless, I really do like this film, and I get caught up in its atmosphere every time I watch it- it still looks good 14 years later (although some of the Gotham backgrounds were obviously paintings). This is largely thanks to director Tim Burton, who mostly understood how to handle Batman and his universe- he was the best man for this job. He gets help from a great score by Danny Elfman and terrific designs by designer Anton Furst.
I would recommend this to all comic book fans, as it stands as an example of both a great comic book transition and of good film making in general.
Watching the original Batman today is like hitting a magic rewind button and going way, way back. Before the glory of Batman Begins, made possible by the folly of Batman and Robin, which was only slightly worse than the flop of Batman Forever, a non-fitting sequel to Batman Returns. But the original Batman, headed by the team of Burton and Keaton, is a simpler kind of movie. One villain will suffice in this early superhero movie, and characters don't have to be realistic. In fact, they can all be preposterous caricatures and the audience will still have fun. The movie doesn't have to be faithful to the comics because comic movies are such a non-regular occurance that the fans have no weight. And so as you travel back you start to realize that maybe Batman isn't as good as you remember it. Sure, Keaton is fun and the second best or best Batman depending on your tastes. Kim Basinger is sexy, Tim Burton injects his odd sensibilities into the style of the film, and Jack Nicholson plays a psychotic Joker. But the movie is far different from what we would expect today, and in all probability would be regarded as a failure. The back story of the comics is altered to fit the filmmakers whims, and instead of portraying a gritty and real Gotham, Burton decides to stylize the fuck out of it. Sure, it looks wonderful, but the characters walking around and talking feel like just that, characters, and their outlandish nature in the face of drama we're supposed to take seriously is downright laughable at times, peaking at the completely misplaced sequences in which Joker and his gang dances around to Prince songs shooting out of a boombox. Perhaps I've gone too far, I don't mean to imply Batman prime isn't great. The design is incredible, it revolutionized the comic movie, and it keeps enough action around to excite us. Point is, it's hard to view Batman as a classic comic book movie when the competition gets stacked up over time, so when in doubt, just try to go back to a simpler time.
