I don't know what the fuck to say about this? Jones and Carrey overreact this one something fierce, Chris O'Donnell shows why Batman movies should never have Robin in them and Joel Schumacher tries way too hard to make this a comic film. This was the beginning of the end for Batman. Extra star for Kidman when she was still hot and Drew Barrymore when she was just a hot recovering druggie and not a slut like she appears to be nowadays. Fuck this. I'm done with this pitiful-ass review.
Not the best of the pre-Christian Bale Batman films but by far not the worst. Jim CArry is ideal as the Riddler, but Tommy Lee Jones' talent was wasted and miscast as Two-Face
The only thing I enjoyed is The Riddler he was seriously funny!!!I completely enjoyed his performance in this but I prefer the Batman to be less comical and more serious.Thank God for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight now :D
Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey r great as the bad guys. After Bale (but a lot after), Kilmer is my fav Batman. Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman and the disappeared since Chris O'Donnell complete an interesting cast.
It's ironic that they used Two-Face for a villain in this - even if he's wasted as a character - as it sums up this film perfectly. Upon viewing the deleted scenes, it's clear that Joel Schumacher wanted to stay in the dark, but it was the studio that were desperate to get back the Happy Meal license that they lost with the last one. Subsequently, this film spends it's entire time fighting between being camp and dark, and in doing so falls apart.
LOL Watching this right after Batman Returns was really weird at first. The music, tone and Gotham completely changed. But it wasn't that bad. Jim Carrey cracks me up as the Riddler and Robin was cool.
Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne was horribly boring though.
A much more kid-oriented movie than the Burton originals, which means it plays like a 'lite' version of a Batman movie. Kilmer is a bit hit and miss throughout the film - sometimes I love him in the role and at other times he fails to make an impact. Nicole Kidman's character, Chase Meridian (or should I say token eye candy because, other than that she's pretty pointless) is downright annoying. Jim Carrey was born to play The Riddler and delivers his lines brilliantly, but Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones) seems a little undeveloped as a character - he just comes across as a mish-mash of all Batman villains without his own distinct quirks. I actually quite liked the Robin character and backstory - it seems to be the only aspect of the plot that has been given some serious consideration and fore-thought. Some funny lines and an attempt at comedy make this film watchable, but now that we have 'Batman Begins' and 'The Dark Knight', 'Batman Forever' just cannot stand up to comparison.
It was a good addition to the Batman franchise I thought, very crazy, very weird and all.
First of all I don't think Val Kilmer was a good choice for playing Bruce Wayne. He might've been OK for Batman, but for Bruce Wayne it's a no-no. Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones were excellent villains. Loved both of their performances.
Action was a bit too comic-like I think. They should've toned that down a bit, but it was still enjoyable.
Overall not a bad film. Worth a watch.
A campy movie but the worst was yet to come. While Jim Carrey was Jim Carrey, I had a problem with Tommy Lee Jones completely wrong turn as Two Face. He played him like a goof. I'm assuming he had to keep up with Carrey. Plus, no Robins in any Batman movies ever! On the plus side, I did like Val Kilmer's Batman and Nicole Kidman is easy on the eyes.
This Val Kilmer was so much better than Michael Keaton as Batman. This movie is full of crazy acting, a little bit over the top, but definitely everlasting (especially talking about Jim Carrey and his partner in crime Tommy Lee Jones). According to me this was certainly NOT the worst Batman movie!!
Two great songs at the end of the movie, performed by U2 & Seal. Love them!
Destroyed the series! Michael Keaton created this dark character and it was all turned upside down in this, with a wimpy Batman, two way over the top villains, and why even bring in Robin, I don't know! Michael and Tim (Burton) should have stuck together and then inevitably handed it over to Chris Bale and Chris Nolan. Joel Schumacer is terrible director, who destroyed the series! Thankfully it is back on track!!!
This movie isn't horrible but when it tries to pay ode to the 60s Batman television series through the campy villains (only certain characteristics) and even having Chris O'Donnell's Robin come in and recycle a "holy joke"; I can't help to lose respect for this movie for how horribly it tries to perform those certain aspects.
In my eye's it's a bridge. Cross this bridge from Tim Burton's artistic metropolis to something similar to my home town. Tim Burton walks with you on this bridge as he produced this film. He crosses back over before the horrid follow up can be conceived.
Joel Schumacher is a decent director but his ideas and ambitions don't seem to work out too well in the finish product.
I must say though that there is some artistic value. I'll give credit to the art crew. I love the way Gotham looks in Shumacher's films. I love the costume designs. The new bat mobile. The Bat jets and boats. I even like the film's obsession with the color green.
Batman Forever stays loyal to Batman but more to the 60s Batman. In my opinion that only works in the 60s and Batman fans weren't necessarily looking for a comedy.
All though loyal it does disappoint. It's simply too dumbed down. I was in anticipation that this would just be a misunderstood film. I thought It was something that could be greater than Batman Returns or even live up to it. This movie may only be great in the memories of my childhood.
If anything this movie I like for the flash back's on Bruce Wayne's past, a fairly good introduction to Robin, and I do admire Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carey portrayals of the two adversaries. But all those things don't mix in well. It seems to me this movie was two-faced. I mean it jumps back to the campy side with Two-Face and Riddler then back to Bruce Wayne's flashbacks, etc.
Val Kilmer is a great Batman in my opinion but his performance wasn't a "Malcolm McDowell in Caligula" type performance; it didn't save the movie for me.
To be honest my favorite portrayal would have to be Nicole Kidman as Dr. Chase. Or Michael Gough, he's always great.
I definitely liked it more than Batman Returns. I didn't quite know I had a thing for Chris O'Donnell :p Nicole Kidman's character was a bit too confident, though I otherwise like her a lot, but Jim Carrey was good, again (and I don't like him at all).
The relationship development between Batman and Robin is the most interesting element of this film. Schumacher does a good job in explaining Robin's agility and fighting abilities, thanks to his circus background, to his partnership with Batman after his own family's demise. Kidman's portrayal of Dr. Chase Meridian feels a little rushed and inconsistent to her character in her forwardness towards the caped avenger, but the biggest disappointments in the film are the two villains. Carey's Riddler is overacted and unoriginal, and gives the feeling that Carey's just doing his shtick. Still, he's better than Lee Jones's Two Face who seems to be mimicking Carey's acting. It would have been much more effective if these two antagonists contrasted each other rather than both of them giggling like mad men all the way through.
