Brilliant Japanese film that shows relevance to modern day attitudes to education as well as plenty of violence! When schools are taken over by their students, who decide when they are going to come to class, when their holidays are etc. there's nothing the teachers or school's can do,so the goverment come up with an idea:Every year a group a students will be taken to a deserted island, get given weapons, some food and drink, and battle until there is only one survivor left and that person is the winner of Battle Royale. Some great scenes where we see certain students sticking together, others getting revenge on others and a few people who are just mental! This is such an entertaining film to watch but is fairly satirical at the same time and could quite possibly be a good idea/way to rid the world of chavs.
A great plot with a terrifying concept. Definately worth watching but there are better and more suspenseful japanese horror-movies. Battle Royale are entertaining and a bit predictable, I prefer more mystery and tension.
A brilliantly dark, twisted and funny movie. Such a bizarre premise that's well written and well directed. The Requiem theme at the beginning sets the tone for the entire film.
Incredible plot, horrific action scenes, deep characters and a taste of dark comedy make this foreign film a must-see. It's well directed (Fukasaku) and excellently cast. Although I'm only familiar with veteran actor Takeshi Kitano (MXC) and extremely cute Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill), the other Japanese cast-members depicted a surprising range of roles. The dramatic loss of friends is heavily emotional in many scenes, very much alike the situations from 'Cloverfield'. If you like action, gorgeous Japanese women in schoolgirl uniforms, badass stand-out characters and intelligent ultraviolence - watch this film.

A classic Japanese film that delves into the darker side of the Japanese culture. Avoid The sequel it's tries to continue the commentary but falls far short.
A dystopian state in Japan eventually forces rebellious students to kill each other on an island. I hope I get to participate in one of those if the opportunity is offered... too many colloquial brats, dimwits and rap-listening philistines populating my school... j/k
It's a very interesting premise, but I felt that, at times, it was neither crafty nor extreme. It's also a bit overrated...
This movie is surely unforgettable. It's very violent and contains plenty of gore, so be warned. But what had me was the plot and characters. Very original story. Memorable characters (I love Kawada-kun!) Great character developements. Awesome ending song. I love this movie!
There is a pure crazy "fictionless"movie, just like watching tv reality programm"the survivor"(without the axes& the guns). These gory characters with a sense of believable, borderline madness were awe-inspiring in my eyes!!Japan set the record straight.Watching this movie Tarantino&Rodriguez, must have been very envied!!!
Interesting premise, tight form. Hard to care about the characters except a select few - still better empathy here than in most gorefests like this. (Two weeks later) After two more watches, still feel the same amount of connection to characters (just enough but not that much). A fun ride, a good movie, and well executed, this is a new classic in the Asian gorefest category. A remake is in the works for the American market, but this is truly a sublime staging of slaughter.
a group of highschool students stranded on a deserted island and were ordered to kill each other and only one will be allowed to leave the island alive.
This film demands that you absolutely place yourself into the fantasy of Battle Royale. From a critical viewpoint, it could be viewed as absurd to the highest degree. From a fantastic viewpoint, it is creative, nightmarish, excessive, violent, and contains great cinematography. A great film to get lost in.
Social commentary? What's the take home message, I wonder? If it's to depict Japan as a nation lost to meaningless ritual in a drive for national progress, where life is are valueless, then yes. ... But mainly its about sticking kids in a situation where they are forced to kill each other. Anyone feel changed by this? Anyone stirred up to change society? No? Thought not.
The central premise is fundamentally ridiculous, for so many reasons - not least of which is that the result of this game would be to create a society of barbarism, not discipline. But that's not to say it's all bad as a film. It does manage to create sympathy for its characters. And, there is also a level in which it works as a contemporary retelling of Lord of the Flies, though it does not agree with the underlying motif that all of us have a heart of sin, for a spirit of co-operation exists amongst the children.
Excellent Japanese Science Fiction action flick is one of the best of it's kind to come out of Japan in recent memory. It's gory and violent to the max, the film is quite controversial on it's subject matter and is one movie you gotta find to see to believe.
