A vicious take-off on reality TV that turns a high-school milieu dominated by cliques and childish relationships into a war zone.
Its content will earn it a following from as many witless viewers as it will thoughtful ones, but that's no reason to condemn it
this movie was good but it was kinda sad how all these kids were thrown together like this just because they didnt respect authority and some were friends but were forced to kill each other
Now I finally see what all the hype was about! This movie lived up to its reputation and delivered some cool deaths and interesting situations!
I find this vision of Japan in the future to be pretty disturbing that we will put teenager against teenager on a desert island all because of their lack of respect for any authority!
fun to watch film with hidden messages...so if you like Japanesse movies and/or fight to the death type of films...watch this!
''Life is a game. So fight for survival and see if you're worth it.''
In future Japan, the government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill each other under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.
Tatsuya Fujiwara: Shuya Nanahara - Boys #15
Aki Maeda: Noriko Nakagawa - Girls #15
Ah Battle Royale reminds me of my days at school.... Only joking, kind of! Royale tackles brain washing and youth in one foul swopp and i can see why it is compaered in certain ideas to Clockwork Orange. Even the music nods at Stanley Kubrick in places. Reminding me of Final Fantasy to music wise and that kid in the smart suit.
The killing is pretty good in this, meant to be disturbing but it caused me to laugh at times in it's approaches.
Could you kill your best friend? Does Battle Royale answer this. I know what i got. You can do anything with the right motivations.
Nice to see Chiaki Kuriyama from Kill Bill and after seeing this i can see why she got the part in that hack and slash. Takeshi Kitano was deranged, loved his teaching.
The countdown aspect of the student dying, pure perfection. The ultimate game and something maybe we need in our education systems for all the chavs and townies and disrespecting youths in Society.
Battle Royale is a masterpiece that shows the limits and extremes of the human mind.
A masterpiece visually and musically.
''Life is a game. So fight for survival and see if you're worth it.''
The usual overrated nipponese blood feast. I can't understand most people's obsession with nonsensical, worthless violence, and to worse degree, to see it in a pseudo critic to society, reality shows, moral values of the teenagers, or whatever moronic and empty excuse they had to make it. A pretentious and unbearably silly caricature.
9/10 Really like how they did this one.followed the book well, seamed realistic, and dent seem hard to belive.Theres a spical version of this-tartian one -that got this film banned stateside for the longest time(under age sex sceene).but most of the recent ones dont have it.No worries though does fine with out it(although if you find one of the ones with it ..HANG ON TO IT..its worth a quite a bit on e-bay).Makes me wounder if some day this might happen RL side...and I thought I hated highschool. Its also easyer to see the movie then the book scence its easyer to keep every one strait on who is who(had to write it down). One thing I liked bout the film was the different aproaches/ideas on how to surivive. They went ranging from stealth, bribes, not playing, groups, bribes, etc. All with varing results. All and all a good flick
A brilliantly dark, twisted and funny movie. Such a bizarre premise that's well written and well directed. The Requiem theme at the beginning sets the tone for the entire film.
Brilliant Japanese film that shows relevance to modern day attitudes to education as well as plenty of violence! When schools are taken over by their students, who decide when they are going to come to class, when their holidays are etc. there's nothing the teachers or school's can do,so the goverment come up with an idea:Every year a group a students will be taken to a deserted island, get given weapons, some food and drink, and battle until there is only one survivor left and that person is the winner of Battle Royale. Some great scenes where we see certain students sticking together, others getting revenge on others and a few people who are just mental! This is such an entertaining film to watch but is fairly satirical at the same time and could quite possibly be a good idea/way to rid the world of chavs.
A great plot with a terrifying concept. Definately worth watching but there are better and more suspenseful japanese horror-movies. Battle Royale are entertaining and a bit predictable, I prefer more mystery and tension.
Incredible plot, horrific action scenes, deep characters and a taste of dark comedy make this foreign film a must-see. It's well directed (Fukasaku) and excellently cast. Although I'm only familiar with veteran actor Takeshi Kitano (MXC) and extremely cute Chiaki Kuriyama (Kill Bill), the other Japanese cast-members depicted a surprising range of roles. The dramatic loss of friends is heavily emotional in many scenes, very much alike the situations from 'Cloverfield'. If you like action, gorgeous Japanese women in schoolgirl uniforms, badass stand-out characters and intelligent ultraviolence - watch this film.
wow just seen this movie 4 the 1st time n think its brilliant..this is a really good movie...this has loads of blood, gore, violence throughout the movie...this is a cult japanese movie that is really enjoyable 2 watch...the soundtrack at the beginning is pretty kewl..theres loads of action scenes throughout the movie...this is an original idea 4 a movie because i dont think that anything like this has never been done before n i just found this really enjoyable 2 watch..this has a good cast of characters throughout the movie its really enjoyable throughout n its got loads of blood throughout the movie but this is just a cult japanese movie n the director keeps the viewers on the edge's of their seats throughout this movie because he keeps you guessing whats going to happen next n its just so enjoyable
A classic Japanese film that delves into the darker side of the Japanese culture. Avoid The sequel it's tries to continue the commentary but falls far short.
A dystopian state in Japan eventually forces rebellious students to kill each other on an island. I hope I get to participate in one of those if the opportunity is offered... too many colloquial brats, dimwits and rap-listening philistines populating my school... j/k
It's a very interesting premise, but I felt that, at times, it was neither crafty nor extreme. It's also a bit overrated...
This movie is surely unforgettable. It's very violent and contains plenty of gore, so be warned. But what had me was the plot and characters. Very original story. Memorable characters (I love Kawada-kun!) Great character developements. Awesome ending song. I love this movie!
There is a pure crazy "fictionless"movie, just like watching tv reality programm"the survivor"(without the axes& the guns). These gory characters with a sense of believable, borderline madness were awe-inspiring in my eyes!!Japan set the record straight.Watching this movie Tarantino&Rodriguez, must have been very envied!!!
