Razor is filler, but good filler

Razor does not work as a stand-alone movie, being more a backdrop for season 4 - even if taking place before the settling in New Caprica. Among the efficient things, it gives new details about the origin of the hybrid cylon, but some unnecessary scenes could have been left out.

The Battlestar team add some more twists and turns. Full review later.

A TV movie that examines plot points long after they are relevant to the actual series. This goes back in time to series 2, and then even further back to the 1st cylon war. The importance of this movie is mostly character based. We also see the difficult decisions that must be made in combat. Many may see Cain as an absolute bitch with no redeeming qualities, but told through the eyes of our new protagonist Jacobsen, we see that war isn't about easy choices. Civilians have to die, orders must be obeyed, and fear and doubt can put everyone at risk. Battlestar Galactica has always been good at balancing its characters and their actions. We have no villains, just differing opinions. The action scenes are exciting, but don't expect to see any major reveals here. It's just a little something extra to understand the world and situations.

Two above-average episodes of the series squished together and helmed by a really disappointing protagonist, dull as dishwater and with a performance to match. Ultimately, this is a good view for the diehard fans, and has an interesting reveal about Starbuck in the last few minutes, but you can probably skip it and live a life of comparable richness.
It was good to see Helena Cain again, though. By far the best guest character BSG ever had (unless you count Ellen, who I am totally obsessed with even though she did nothing). I haven't watched the fourth season yet so I don't know if they have any stunning new additions, but no one else ever really matched Michelle Forbes's presence on the series.

Not as good as the original miniseries, but still way better than 90% of TV

An AMAZING series, full of relevant issues (both social & political).

An important part of the Battlestar mythos, and a must-have for any fan.

Nice special effects and production design, which has always been a strong signature for the series in general. This movie is a nice little treat for us fans, while in wait for season 4. It added quite a lot to the BSG saga, in terms of new revelations and plots that has previously only been a part of the background. In other words, the puzzle of BSG feels much more complete now.

If you are not a fan of the Battlestar Galactica series don't even consider watching this. This is made especially for the fans of the series and no one else.
This film basically plays out like an episode drawn out to two hours. Nothing more. The only difference is that all the usual characters from the series take a back seat in this film and make way for a new character to take the spotlight. It is nice to see a fresh face once and a while. Like the later episodes of the series, which aren't as good as the earlier ones, this film moves slowly and it can become a little boring at times. There isn't a whole lot of action since the film focuses more on the story of Admiral Cain on the Pegasus. At least this film gives us a nice surprise that will excite fans of the classic Battlestar Galactica series. You will know what I mean if you see this. It truly is one of the more memorable points of this series.

Although the story for this film does tie in with the series, it does stand on its own since it does take place with episodes that have already come to past. As I just said this film can stand on its own, but you STILL NEED to be up to speed with the series to truly understand what is going on.

The special effects along with the CG is pretty spectacular as usual. The ship to ship fights are always great to watch. It's just too bad that they have very few of it.

The acting is everything you'd expect from the series. The newcomer, Stephanie Jacobsen is great as Kendra Shaw. She is beautiful and her accent does wonders for her character. It is also good to see more of Michelle Forbes' character, who we only see a little of in the series.

If you miss this film do not worry since it doesn't advance the series in any way. Actually there is a small piece of dialogue at the end, which possibly hints at something really big for the final season. The identity of the final cylon perhaps?

I've been a big fan of the re-invention of Battlestar Galactica; the first half of series 3 was compulsive viewing. And then, seemingly overnight, it turned into absolute drivel; the decidedly unthrilling "climax" to the story basically put me off it for good. This, however, has restored my faith. It returns to an earlier point in the plotline and introduces an interesting new character, and has the fantastic effects, thrilling space battles and moral grey areas that marked the series when it was at it's best. Highlights include Aliens style gun battles and a great scene in which Adama in his youth comes across cylon experiments on humans that is reminiscent of the lab scene in alien resurrection, hinting at a turn toward a more gothic horror style feel. It does have moments of gung ho flag waving, but this is to be expected from a one-off story in an American series, and it does make an interesting (albeit borderline homophobic?) point in the shape of Adama's "there but for the grace of God" speech. Add some interesting tasters for a possible new spin off set in the times of the original series, complete with appearances by the far cooler old school cylons and I'm actually looking forward to the new season again!

"Battlestar Galactica: Razor" takes place shortly after Lee "Apollo" Adama(Jamie Bamber) becomes captain of the Battlestar Pegasus. His first choice for executive officer is Kendra Shaw(Stephanie Jacobsen) who had disciplinary issues with Apollo's two predecessors and is working kitchen duty when she is promoted. But she thrived under her first commander, Admiral Helena Cain(the underrated Michelle Forbes), after the Cylon genocide of the human race.

"Battlestar Galactica: Razor" only has four regular characters - Apollo, Cylon Six, Starbuck and Bill Adama - play central roles in this excellent and intelligent television movie which gives full attention to events on board the Pegasus both under Apollo and Admiral Cain. While the movie does a superb job of filling in the gaps, it also gives hints to the future. It is interesting to watch the characters as they make impossible decisions and then the consequences of those actions.(For example, Kendra injects drugs to dull the memories.) In times of war, there are no easy answers(the series' internal conflicts have always been as strong as the ongoing human-Cylon war) and there should be no rush to judgment until all the information is known which is a continuation of the series' complex themes. Peculiar time-jumping recount of the Battlestar Pegasus which appeared during the series in the middle of Season 2. This feature-length movie came out after Season 3 was completed, thereby requiring a bit of memory rattling. I would place this above only the episode 'Black Market' in the annals of BSG over the first three seasons, mainly because we spend most of our time with two largely unlikable characters, the crazy Admiral Cain and steely Major Shaw. Also, the guy who plays young Bill Adama is terrible, a shame Olmos' real son already filled the flightsuit of Hot Dog. Otherwise this is a pretty solid drama with lots of action. Cool to see the original Cylon and Raider designs from the 1970's used here during the First Cylon War, and Starbuck gets to flex her acting muscle the most of the BSG cast, with Apollo and Adama Senior ranking #2 & 3. Good but not great BSG.

On the plus side this full length feature adds some welcome backgound, most notably relating to Pegasus and her crew. On the down side the main plot which develops following Pegasus's meeting with Galactica is not really attached to the rest of the story arc in any meaningful way and has the feel of a fairly cynical money making exercise filling up a couple of hours of video time. For me the additional background offered makes it worthwhile but the tagged on storyline is unnecessary and quite forgettable in the great scheme of the Battlestar Galactica universe.

SO GOOD!!! What a glorious insert between seasons 3 and 4 of BSG. This gives a new perspective and forces you to rethink assumptions you've already made.

Other than one very important plot point, this is like a long episode where nothing critical happens to anyone we know and love.
In fact, it spends the first 20 minutes just getting new watchers up to speed.
Battlestar fans are treated to some good info about the Pegasus and why we saw certain things happening the way they did.
It is essential viewing for all Battlestar watchers just for that one key piece of crucial info.

Not Bad as a stand alone movie- Most of the stuff you see on this series is some of the best work on TV right now.

Nice little tease to keep me waiting for the final season. Just a long filler episode from season 3 basically
