Very funny premise...if the movie was soley about remaking movies, it would have been more of a winner. Mos Def is an amazing actor - would like to see him in more films.

Jerry (Jack Black) becomes magnetized unintentionally destroys every tape in his friend Mike's (Mos Def) video store and to keep the business going they decide to re-shoot all the films themselves, from "Robocop" and "Ghostbusters" to "The Lion King" and "Men In Black". Sounds like a fun idea for a comedy, and it could have been. "Be Kind Rewind" is absolutely hilarious when we see Jerry and Mike filming their versions of the movies, but the real movie plot about them saving the video store from demolition is nothing more than a really boring drama and the ending just disappointed on all levels. Check out KellyRikDixon review here on Flixster, her review is all my thoughts, but better written than mine.

It's too bad Gondry didn't follow his idea through 100% or we might've had a minor classic on our hands. Instead of devoting the movie almost exclusively to scenes on the set like he should have, he split the movie into two separate, distinct pieces. In between the good stuff (the movie-making scenes), we get a bunch of long, annoying scenes where city officials tell the boys that they only have sixty days to raise ten thousand dollars or they tear down the store.
