  Instead of a chick flick, this movie is a guy movie - with drinking, burping, bare breasts, stupid characters, etc. I found the beer (and humour) tasteless. Pass on this movie.

Now this never got released in theaters in New Zealand, possibly something with the distribution but I finally saw this in the video shop, remembered reading about it last year, finding out is was the Broken Lizard team who also did Super Troopers and I remember having a chuckle at the trailer, so I hired it. Now people that know me now, I obviously hate films that lack plot, developed characters and everything that makes a film of whatever genre a brilliant film. Now with comedy, theres 2 ways you can go, you can go the route where your comedy is well thought-out, witty, smart and has lovable, well thought-out characters (Little Miss Sunshine comes to mind there) and then you have the all out, over the top, mindless comedy that if made right, you can forget its flaws and have a really good time....this film does that. No doubt that there is no developed characters, obviously it is full of cliches and you know what is going to happen, but by god did I laugh during this film. With nearly every gag hitting it right on the money and the "Asshole" scene right up until the morning after had me in tears. This is highly recommended for anyone looking for some mindless, hilarious fun, don't forget to have a beer or two first.

  Absurdity of an outrageous level, Beerfest is the kind of film that puts disclaimers warning against its content, yet glorifies these acts through audience manipulating heroes overcoming adversity. Part two hour beer commercial, part tasteless humour, Beerfest will bring a thirst for both a drink and a more refreshing comedy. Having it's moments but always failing to follow through with the right paths, Beerfest is very much a loud party with black spots, much like the next morning for our binging characters. There are good moments, but these tend to be drowned out by the slew of over-performed antics that ruin an otherwise good affair. It's evident that the makers of the film have a flair of intelligence, but what tends to confound is why they choose such low brow turns in the story arc; turns that reach the levels of sheer idiocy. Many a time the film simply lacks any tact. It can be awkward, it can be stupid, and it can be downright bad, given through points that simply have no bearing on the story or comedic flavour. However, like finding a tastier beer to flush out the toxins of a cheaper variety, the film manages to attempt a balance through some undershown, intelligent ideas and generally humourful scenes. Even after the bad taste of depressed humour at its most downtrodden, the audience may still find themselves smiling for our characters as they down one, two, or twenty drinks that comprise the premise of the film. And it is this premise that makes Beerfest furthermore awkward. Through its formulaic paths and its scringe-worthy scenes, the general plot for the film should immediately deter and prove to have little promise. It's a film that promotes without meaning to, and while this could be a dangerous thing, it still tends to entertain at the most crucial points. Just when it may lose the audience for good, it pulls out a gag that just may turn a laugh. Idiotic and often lacking tact, Beerfest is a time out that will deliver in small amounts to those willing to sit through the drivel of a drunk. This is hardly thoughtful cinema, but for a film based entirely on an alcoholic drink and the means of drinking it quickest, this is to be expected.

  I wasn't freaking out with laughter, but Beerfest did have some funny moments. A little funnier than Club Dread but it's no Super Troopers. The Willy Nelson cameo at the end was great but it's nothing to go too far out of your way to see.

  Absolutely hilarious comedy in an underground beer competition that makes me top laugh. The unseen version of this film on DVD is incredibility cool with more suds, sex and slapstick!

  I really like Broken Lizard movies, and this one did not disappoint. The premise itself was really amusing, and the dialogue was really funny. I liked the way they poked fun at the whole 'sports competition movie' conventions.

  There is an almost illicit charm in likening Beerfest to a drinking game. The gags come fast and furiously, such that the audience has to chug them quickly to get onto the next bit. Because the subject matter is beer and the genre is comedy, a happy buzz permeates the audience's viewing pleasure throughout the game's running time. After the comedy keg has kicked, however, the audience is left with a dull feeling about the head--unsure of whether or not they are a winner. In this R-rated comedy, American brothers Todd and Jon Wolfhouse (Soter, Stolhanske) journey to Munich to spread their grandfather's (Donald Sutherland) ashes at Oktoberfest where they mistakenly stumble upon Beerfest, the secret Olympics of binge drinking. Brewmaster Jay Chandrasekhar seems to have fermented fraternal comedy fan favorites Strange Brew, Animal House, and Old School into this craft offering of Valhalla decadence. At this point in the game, Broken Lizard (the comedy troupe which also gave us Super Troopers) knows how best to utilize their bag of tricks. The hilarious ensemble (Steve Lemme, Kevin Heffernan, Chandrasekhar) fit their character types so letter-perfect that the marquee names (Sutherland, Cloris Leachman) are appropriately relegated to supporting roles. The last time this troupe played second fiddle to a proven star (Bill Paxton), the result was the inarguably unfunny Club Dread. Unfortunately, they funnel TOO many gags (only some of which work) into Beerfest's running time. By the time the ensemble gets around to competing in the actual games, every possible joke about beer (and the audience by proxy) has already been drunk under the table. Bottom Line: Tastes good, less filling.
