Wow. This movie bored the hell outta me. But for some reason I actually liked it. This movie is about this kid who supposedly died even though he didnt and blah blah blah. And he "comes back" and kills the people he picked out. Stoners, Hos, Jocks, Whores, and a Virgin. One hell of a combo right? Lol.
Shallow, but fun to watch, this movie delivers in its ability to mock the horror genre while at the same time create a very captivating concept of a sort of "behind the scenes" look at the creation of a slasher scenario. Aside from the lead acting by Nathan Baesel, and some decent performances from the film crew, the acting in this movie left some to be desired, but it seemed to add to the cheesy, nostalgic comedy the movie was going for (playing off horror classics like "nightmare on elm street," "halloween," and "friday the 13th"). All in all, I've got to give the film points for being creative, but it really fails to deliver in it's climax as it becomes entirely too predictable.
i absolutely adore this film...it starts off as a horror movie, quickly turns into a comedy, and finishes off as it started...and it does it in style, dang it. i recommend everyone to give it a shot. some folks may not like it, but i feel that most will enjoy what they see.
Genius lol. It's a poke at some of your favorite horror movies in a comical sense, but it also has serious moments. You go from laughing to being shocked and back to laughing again.
It seemed like your typical mockumentary until a little past the middle of the film. I love the transition and their panic when they realize they're not the outsiders recording someone else's life. The comparisons and analysis of slasher horror films is also pretty good. Nathan Baesel as the masked killer gives it just the right amount of silly-freaky mix. Recommended to fans of Dexter and/or any slasher/serial killer film.
I must say this is quite an ingenious film, and my only problem was that I was going into it too excited. The film takes place in a semi-fictional environment where Freddy Kreuger, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees are actually alive, and Leslie Vernon is now looking to make his mark in serial killer history. The film starts off as a mockumentary about a journalist following Leslie as he goes through the process of planning his massacre. The first hour of this film are pure genius, comprising of great black comedy, and explaining how serial killers plan their massacres (quite interesting actually). Then the last half hour switches perfectly to a full blown 80's slasher film and it is awesome. One of my fav parts of this movie is Leslie's mask, it is just so creepy, and this is truly a great homage to those fantastic 80' s horror movies.
I really enjoyed this movie. Although the characters are pretty dumb and hard to feel for, this movie still delivers. I think the thing I loved most was how creepy it was that Leslie had such a seemingly innocent joy out of being a slasher. I will say that I liked the documentary portion of the movie better than the final, traditional slasher sequence. This movie is just something fresh, and not like other slasher movies. Give it a go, and you may be surprised.
A new benchmark for slasher films. I love the self-referential genre film, especially one executed as nicely as this one (all puns intended). I hope this is the start of a gagillion Les movies. Dark, ironic, and revealing in theme, the story flows well. I found the killer to be genuinely scary, both in art design and character pschology.
Still kinda mixed up about this one. I thought of "The Last Horror Movie" the whole time I was watching this. It has Robert Englund so that's two stars off the bat. And then you have the return of Zelda Rubenstein. Last time I saw her was in a Tales from the Crypt episode. The concept of this movie is pretty cool, but you can see the twist coming a mile away. I would rent this one before I rush out and buy it.
Leslie explain to a young student in journalism into a self documentary, how serial killers such as Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers planned their massacres and how he prepared for his own masscre.
Theres a lot of planning before going for the masscre, everything needs to be in place to make it a success. And then comes the massacre, old fashioned slashing style.
An upcoming serial killer named Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) invites a film crew to join him and film his rise to stardom by killing a group of teenagers and becoming the next Freddy Kruger/Michael Myers/Jason Vorhees. " Behind The Mask..." has a different and original storyline and could have been a instant classic, but it's never really that interesting, thrilling, scary or funny enough to reach that 'title'. Even if it gets better towards the end, I felt pretty bored while watching it and can't help to think that maybe it would have been better if it was just another 'slasher' movie.
A small, basically direct to video horror mockumentary, one I had very low expectations for when I decided to stream it through Netflix. I was very pleasantly surprised by the film which was quite smart and pretty well made on a small budget. The film is one part mockumentary, one part media satire, and one part slasher movie parody. All of these parts have been done better in movies like Man Bites Dog, Natural Born Killers, and Scream, but their combination here feels rather fresh and original.
The film takes place in an alternate universe where slasher villains are a real social issue. Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger, and Jason Vorhees are all mentioned by name as real serial killers in this world. A documentary crew is contacted by Leslie Vernon, who claims he is going to be the next semi-supernatural killer. This camera crew is then allowed to follow Vernon as he plans out his attack on a group of teenagers.
The parts following the killer work the best, there is a very well done dark humor in all this. For example there is one part where Vernon points out his ?Survivor Girl,? the documentary crew asks him what that means, he explains that it is an ?industry term? and explains that a survivor girl is a virgin who will come back and fight back against his in the end. Later we see Vernon plan out his final assault where he sabotages the cars so that they?ll fail to start at just the right moment. The pattern should be clear.
This isn?t a perfect film, there are some pretty large plot holes, an Ahab character is put in the mix awkwardly, and the film sort of devolves in its last twenty minutes. It?s also a bit hard to believe the basic premise of a film crew just letting the guy plan out his mass murder. But this isn?t meant to be realistic, it?s a satire, and a lot of this isn?t that much of a distraction as it could have been, and at the end of the day this is a really strong piece of work.
This movie was absolutly the most clever Dark Comedy I have ever seen! Loved this independent film! Nathan puts in an amazing performance in the title role! The direction is top knotch and the writing is VERY clever. Robert Englund also puts in a notable performance as...a HERO (!) and it's great to see Zelda Rubenstein deliver such an eerie monologue as she did in this film.
A truly memorable faux-slasher genre movie, this is memorable for all the right reasons. Kind of a mix between Man Bites Dog and all the '80's slasher pics, Behind The Mask has a very clever, funny, and original script that only benefits from the strangely sympathetic performance of the lead actor. Both an homage AND a deconstruction of the slasher genre, this is entertaining from start to finish. This is a must-see for anyone who'd like to watch something he haven't seen before. A soon-to-become cult horror movie if you ask me...
This movie is everything that the horror movie world of today lacks: Brains, Creativity, and...Humor?!? Yes, I said humor. Not only can it keep its standard horror formula, but it can also throw a few laughs in without making the movie itself a joke. Well, that is until all the blood and guts start spilling all over the place during the second half... And it is in this second half where the one true flaw of this movie shows. A.K.A. the ending. After the promising rest of the movie, the end doesn't satisfy. Maybe it was Predictable? Unoriginal? I don't know but it left me disappointed. That's okay, though. This feeling goes away if you watch through the credits... Overall, an excellent example of what the cinema of today is lacking.
