Pinky is set to marry another Indian man. One day at the park Jess meets another girl who plays for an area all girls soccer team. She try out and is accepted on the team. The coaches name is Joe. He is strick but a good coach. He played soccer but was injured so he started coaching. Jess starts lying to her family in order to play soccer. She asks for money to buy shoes for the wedding, but instead comes home with new soccer sneakers. She also takes a trip to Germany to play without permission. A scout sees both girls and wants to see the final game. Jess forms an attachment to Joe and Jess's parents forbids her to play. The girls have an argument over the same man. They both like Joe. Indian girls aren't allowed to play soccer or show off their bodies. The other girls do badly without Jess there. Jess's father watches her game and realizes times have changes since he played soccer. He allows her to go to the final game. She goes to the second half and wins. The scout gives both girls a free scholarship to play soccer in America. They head for Santa Clara. Jess tells Joe she Will be back at Christmas, and they can announce their engagement then.Jess didn't want to put to much on her parents. Joe tells Jess that he got a new coaching job for men's soccer. He turned it down to coach the women's division. The Indians in this movie prayed to the God in the picture for everything. They asked for blessings for things, and stuck to their customs. Their beliefs were arranged marriages, no showing certain parts of the body, same race marriage, and no smiling while getting married. Their religion determines how they act, what they say, how important they are in the community, and who their married to.

The first film i ever saw with Keira Knightley and where i first became a fan of hers. I don't like football at all or even films to do with it but this was a really good film and one of my true favourites to watch. I loved every part of it!!! I own the DVD and watch it constantly.

    Enjoyable, if predictable, feel-good film.
  • August 24, 2009
i love this movie soooo much, despite keira knightley looking scarily emaciated. it's a million times funnier if you're indian.

this is a really good flick. whilst it initially comes off as a run of the mill chick flick, there is plenty in there for guys too, especially keira knightley who is looking gorgeous as always.

  • August 14, 2009
Enjoyable enough film with stereotypical westernized Indian family. Mom is an oppressive bitch, sister is a whore and Dad is a closet liberal. Couldn't beat me over the head with it any more.

The movie shone through to reveal a good coming of age story that works well outside of race or sport. Jesminder 'Jess' Kaur Bhamra wants to do something that her parents don't agree with ? this is true of all teenagers and the movie recognises this by focusing not only on...( read more) Jess, but also the growing pains of white team mate Juliette 'Jules' Paxton. The story moves well and is funny without being an out and out comedy. The movie has problems, such as the main one being that it is billed as a comedy but is more of a funny drama. However the main weakness is the story piling on events. Also the director is clearly happier with the Asian wedding footage, etc. than with the football stuff, hence any football action is either blurred or unrealistic. Although the story gets a bit soapy at times, it remains funny and charming, even with the overly optimistic conclusion. The main cast are delightful and really involved me. Parminder Nagra is really good as Jesminder 'Jess' Kaur Bhamra, she is pretty but also funny and vunerable, she really gets the audience behind her. Similarly Keira Knightley is charming and warm as Juliette 'Jules' Paxton. Juliet Stevenson fits her role perfectly and the Bhamra family all play well, neither being comedy characters or ogres. The most talented All Saint, Shaznay Lewis is barely used, but some funny cameos are punchy, Gary Lineker, Alan Hanson, John Barnes and John Motson are all funny. Some of the dialogue is terrible and falls flat, but it is to the movie's credit that it moves on regardless. Overall though, beyond the football and the David Beckham worship, this is a good tale of a girl growing up and finding her own path, regardless of race or sport.
