The race, OMFG, can you imaging doing that in 1959? "We keep you alive to serve this ship, so row well and live" ...( read more) There are like 4 movies in one here.

Just when I thought no movie could ever be compared to Gladiator.....

My first thought before watching this film was how I'm going to survive for the whole 210 minutes & trust me never felt bored by any single moment of it!

From the very beginning(which depicts the birth of...( read more) Jesus christ) to the very end of the film, the movie was so brilliant!

For a movie of its time & even today I'll always regard it as perhaps the best movie ever made.

watching the film made me a big fan of charlton heston(& the very beautiful Cathy O'Donnell) ...his depiction of the titular character Judah Ben-Hur was excellent.Stephen boyd also served as a perfect friend-turned-enemy of Ben-hur.

also some good supporting characters provided by Jack hawkins,Hugh Griffith & Haya Harareet

The boat scene & the chariot scene were particularly very masterfully directed & no matter how much I write about it,it wouldn't be enough!

What a movie!......I'm so glad I watched this film in my lifetime.....BRAVO William Wyler for making such an epic

If you havent seen it yet...well make sure you watch it just once in your life!

1950s movie. I watched it more than ten times when I was a kid. My father brought a video cassette from England. Great movie!! No wonder it won 11 oscars.

In the same category of Citizen Kane, Star Wars and Titanic in terms of all-time greatest movie (Star Wars gets the edge heh!). The Roman chariot race scene at the end is an all-time movie icon. Even with Charlton Heston at his all-time overacting glory, there are very few movie...( read more)s as powerful as this one. Films set against real life historical backdrops (i.e. the crucifixion of Christ) tend to not only be loved by the Academy at Oscar time, but also tend to be iconic and immortal.

The magnitude of this production makes it a must-see for film buffs. A gargantuan, thrilling historical epic that set the record for most Oscar wins (eleven) until the release of Titanic in 1997. An ambitious adventure picture filled with exciting set pieces, it is also an artist...( read more)ically crafted work with plenty of unforgettable images.

    BEN-HUR (1959)
    dir. William Wyler
cast. Charleston Heston, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins

As a child I thought this and The Ten Commandments were the same film. You cant blame a kid if he cant make the difference between two overlong-religious-themed epics starring Ch

...( read more)arlton Heston, can you ? Ben-Hur is quite a great achievement on a technical level. All departments are at their best. Its a gorgeous film to look at, but unfortunately, I couldnt get into it. Its not because of the theme.

At 224 minutes, it is a very long film, not nearly as engaging as it should be, but there are some great moments of filmmaking. The chariots race is a classic. Its exciting, suspenseful, even by today's standards. There are some subplot elements that are extremely interesting, involving the son of God, Jesus himself, and we never see his face. Good decision.

Ben-Hur isnt a small epic, it is grand, it is huge. The sets are enormous, the shots are wide, the plot is over-dramatic and one would think it deserved to be the first film to win 11 Oscars. It might have deserve all that praise, but one big flaw, the reason I couldnt get into this: Charleston Heston. Take a two-by-four and the acting wont be as wooden. I usually dont mind Heston, Planet of the Apes is a personal favorite of mine, but in a film as ambitious as The Ten Commandments I would have liked to see a better actor. Still, I have nothing but respect for this film, despite some unintentionally campy moments, but it influenced many directors and set a standard for action sequences.

This movie is the best movie featuring the Ancient Period. Heston does a great job getting through agony and defeating his enemies. The chariot race is the essecence of the movie. My favorite part of this movie is the protrayal of Jesus. I love that he pratically saved Judah from...( read more) himself and that you never get to see his face.

Ben Hur, a Tale of the Christ, was hugely popular as a novel, a play and two movies. It was written in a less vulgar time about a very spiritual event. Seen today by moviegoers addicted to constant action and low frequency effects, it will seem ponderous, slow and pretentious. We...( read more)ll, it is a little. You have to pay attention to the dialogue or you won't get it at all. Some of the intimate scenes aren't all that great. Anyone that really pays attention can tell the sea battle is done with miniatures. It's still worth watching. As everyone ought to know by now, the chariot race is one-of-a-kind; nothing else comes close to that real live race where the main actors actually raced most of the time.

One of the worst Oscar winners ever.
  • August 20, 2009
A classic with Charleton Heston as the lead. If you like the epic films of the past generation this film is a must. It even manages to have a Christian message about faith in God through the life and sacrifice of the Messiah (Christ).

Bloated epic, very big on spectacle, lacking in plot. Heston overacts severely and can not fathom how he could have won an Oscar over Jack Lemmon (Some Like It Hot), Jimmy Stewart (Anatomy of a Murder) or Paul Muni (The Last Angry Man) that year. There are indeed some memorable, ...( read more)even unforgettable scenes. Way way too long and certainly overrated.

I love, love, love, the epic chariot race... the rest of the movie? Boringest boring that ever did boring. I've never been a huge fan of bible epics having been tortured with them by my grandparents and this one always took the cake. Lacks the camp of Ten Commandments...

Big-budget film from the late 50s, starring Charlton Heston. You don't get much better than that. It's long, but it's worth it. Treachery, love, revenge, action, drama, it's all here. Classic story brought the the big-screen that everyone must see at least once.
