Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, Shirley MacLaine

Just when his career hits an all-time low, a conceited and frustrated movie star, Jack Wyatt, gets one last shot when he's cast to do a remake of a cult TV series, 'Bewitched,' playing the lead role o...( read more  read more... )f Darren. In search of his leading lady, Samantha, the competitive, insecure Wyatt makes it pretty clear to his producers that his co-star needs to be an unknown, so as not to steal his thunder. Finally, after weeks of searching, he finds the perfect witch in the shy Isabel Bigelow, but he has no idea just how "perfect" she really is. So, as the script for the popular show is being re-tooled to, instead, center around Darren's character, the actor Wyatt soon discovers that his increasingly annoyed new leading lady, Isabel -- who begins to wreak havoc on set -- is an actual witch, who can truly cast spells.

    "Be warned. Be ready."

Nora Ephron directed and co-wrote this updated adaptation of a classic situation comedy that also casts a satirical eye on the entertainment industry. Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) is a movie star whose career has been going into a slow and steady decli...( read more)ne. Desperate for a project that will give his reputation a jump start, Jack agrees to star in a film version of the once-popular television series Bewitched as hapless hubby Darrin Stephens, under the condition that an unknown actress be cast as the female lead so he won't be upstaged. After auditioning dozens of women who fail to make the grade, Jack meets lovely and charming Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman), and is immediately certain she's the perfect choice to play witch-turned-housewife Samantha. However, there's one thing neither Jack nor the producers of the film know -- Isabel really is a witch, and while she's been trying to get along without her powers to better fit in among mortals, she will use her special talents when need be.

While I was not expecting miracles from a remake of a classic TV show, I still expected new twists and an exciting plot. I found much of the movie to be redundant and unnecessary. It is easy to become disconnected from the characters and the storyline. The setting is uninteresting and difficult to stay focused on. It seemed to be a horrible waste of time and money. As much as I like Nicole Kidman, her performance was lackluster and Will Ferrell was very much himself...which was expected, but a deviation would have been appreciated. All of the worthwhile punchlines and jokes were used in the movie trailer...leaving audiences feeling as though they'd already seen the movie. I was not expecting much from what I'd heard about it, but Bewitched was really charming and fun. I liked it.

    Biggest Disapointment!
I love both of the stars, but sadly the best part of the film is the song from the band 'Persephone's Bees' that was played duting the begining of the film.

It's nice to run away in the world of magic sometimes, but this is stupid

This is just wrong in so many ways. Never ruin a great classic.

It's a nice ride ... There's nothing subversive or edgy about it ... But it's an agreeable piece of Hollywood product. full review

The artificiality of Bewitched is so exaggerated that it almost works in the movie's favor for the first 20 minutes or so, before that heavy synthetic Ephron odor really sets in. full review

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Screenwriters Ephron and her sister Delia are able to get laughs and make character points even in the moments of laying out a fairly involved exposition, and that's no small thing. That's skilled cra... full review

Ephron seems unsure as to whether she's filming a zany retro comedy or a conventional romance, and the film zips back and forth between genres, never really settling. full review

Bewitched will not cast you under its spell. It is more likely to bother and bewilder. full review

Nora Ephron used to mine the tension between romantic fantasy and the real (disappointing) world for honest laughs. But now she has settled happily in big-budget star-studded chick-flick land, where i... full review

It's one of those movies where you smile and laugh and are reasonably entertained, but you get no sense of a mighty enterprise sweeping you along with its comedic force. There is not a movie here. Jus... full review

The kind of movie where the lulls between jokes are brief and you leave the theater a little happier than when you came in. full review

Stepping into Montgomery's shoes is a thankless task, but Kidman comes across as preternaturally flustered by everything that heightened the serenity of her predecessor. full review

I absolutely do not like Will Ferrell. Most movies he is in is ruined by him. If I may be frank. But he has his funny moments. Nichole Kidman was gorgous in this!! She was perfect for the part.
