Full of silliness you either will or will not be able to appreciate, Bio Zombie is just kind of there. Maybe something in the cultural translation was lost on me, maybe the claustrophobia of an Asian mall did me in or maybe the low budget quality was just too much for me, but I wasn't amazed by Bio Zombie. The dubbing's horrible, the effects bad but the ending's great.
There's something so endearing about Hong Kong's sense of humour. This film, whilst no masterpiece, is a great bit of fun.
Almost every character is candidate for the most 2-dimensional character I have ever seen and some of the dialogue is awful, however, I have a sneaking suspicion this is due to the dub I watched as opposed the film itself (couldn't get a subtitled copy). Especially as some parts of the dialogue are great and really witty.
It's a very strangely structured film, starting off almost like if Stephen Chow had directed Mallrats and soon turning into a typical straight-to-video zombie film (except it's good) before moving on to a dark ending. But for some reason that works here. Zombie films are often weirdly structured after all.
Overall, it's incredibly enjoyable, but if you can, go for the subtitled option. The two main characters are very likeable and there's some great humour. Also, it's the first film or anything that I've ever seen suggest the notion of human sushi, which is in my opinion something for it to be proud of.
Personal enjoyment: 7/10
Actual quality as a film: 6/10
A bit goofy...a mix of zombie horror with some laughs thrown in to boot..this movie doesnt take itself too seriously..so if you are a fan of the zombie genre..relax and enjoy
So a zombie film from Hong Kong this is. Not sure what to expect? Well neither was I, but this is far more comedic than it is horrific. It's actually like an Asian version of "Dawn Of The Dead" only not as well made, not scary in any way and the special effects weren't so special. Still this was high octane, well intentioned and the characters are highly amusing and it's an easy watch.
The story revolves around some zombie-tainted soft drink which infects some guy who in turn spreads zombiesm all over the darned place. Our main characters are two mall rats who work in a video store and they do somewhat remind me of Beavis & Butthead only less moronic (slightly). They meet a young girl and rob her (one with a bucket on his head) and take her ring, then pick her up and date her. By this point the zombiesm has spread around the mall and it becomes a survival mission.
It's colorful, the dialog is pretty funny (intentionally so I'd imagine but the ridiculous dubbed voices don't help either). If it weren't for the cheapness of the effects I think this movie would be a whole lot more regarded but as is, it's a fun little romp in zombieland.
My first Asian dvd and I think compared to all those dark haired-female ghost stories this one totally rules. The first thing that came to my mind while watching it was 'damn this movie could be the Asian version of Dawn of the Dead (79's) as 95% of the movie action is in a mall. the plot is rather simple once again, what seems to be a Yakuza is hitten by Crazy Bee and Woody Invincible on their way back to their work at the store. Semi-conscious Crazy Bee gives the bad guy some juice he found near the injured man, juice that was what he thought. After hiding the man in their trunk went back to the store. Later in the day they went back to the parking only to see the man has disappear but what really happend? it turns out the famous juice was a liquid transforming ppl into zombie and with a zombie in a mall full of customers, u know what to expect and from there we are watching our heros trying to escape the zombie plague. not as violent as other Asian zombie movie this one still has some little gore, but this movie prefer action and action over blood and gore and they did it with success. Humor is playing a huge part in the movie but without falling into comedy territory. The acting is professional as well but the only complain I have is the movie is a little slow to start. For the first 40 min we get to know a little more about the characters but after those 40 min the action kick-in! Very interesting movie!
I'm still laughing at some the scenes from this movie. I swear you will never look at a Chinese mall the same way. Ludicrous creature effects, silly and stupid characters, and a non-existent story. But still pretty damn funny.
I really didn't want to see this movie at first. Theres just something funny about Asian Zombies in general, aside from that a very entertaining, ridiculous, fun, hillarious, mall based, biological weapon, Zombie movie.
Hilarious homage to Romero's Dawn of the Dead with fantastic characters and a surprisingly good story to keep you entertained all the way through. Soe excellent stylistic choices augment the manic energy provided by this film. Deserves to be a cult classic.
Crazy Bee and Woody Invincible are two of my favourite characters in a horror film. I mean, just the names alone are enough to put them in the top ten.
You probably haven't ever heard of this movie, and that's really too bad, because it's one of the more fun movies I've seen in a long time. Bio Zombie is the story of Crazy Bee and Woody Invincible (love those names!) -- two losers who run a bootleg VCD store in a Hong Kong dirt mall. But when the duo unwittingly unleash a mini-zombie holocaust in their workplace, the unruly pair seize the chance to become heroes to all of the co-hawkers that usually push them around. A touching, giggle-worthy waste of 80 minutes.
This is about mid-level in the Japanese zombie stakes: not as good as Junk or Wild Zero but much better than Stacy. It's funny but Shaun of the Dead would come along a few years later and blow it out of the water.
this is the first actual zombie movie i have contacted..tat y i like zombie then the tradition chinese jumping zombie..love the ppl running around the shopping center..
