While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon--who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields--has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen, an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

An harrowing action-adventure and an social commentary at the same time. Djimon Hounsou's performance will move you to cheers and tears.

A fisherman caught up in the civil war of Sierra Leone reluctanctly teams up with an amoral smuggler to retrieve a precious stone in the hope that it will secure freedom for his family. Edward Zwick has made a career of making worthy adventure-with-a-message movies which have ten...( read more)ded to be a cut above the usual Hollwood action blockbuster fodder, and Blood Diamond is very much in this tradition. Rather than a deeply insightful analysis of the political situation, it is more of a straight action adventure that uses the conflict as a colourful backdrop to the story. Not that it doesn't have any points to make; it highlights the cynical complicitness of the West in the conflict diamond trade, and the "politics" of the warring factions whose ideologies extend no further than greedy and corrupt self interest. Zwick's penchant for dewy eyed sentimentality does rear its head towards the end of the film, but no more so than most other films of its type; personally my favourite moment was when Hounsou wordlessly eyed the absurdly ostentatious bauble that has been the cause of all his woes, destined for the necks of the idle rich in a jewelry store window. Not in the same league as the likes of The Killing Fields, but if you want something more in the way of rousing adventure rather than emotionally harrowing, this is a fine choice.

Wow. at times this movie seemed a bit drawn out more than necessary, but at the end of the movie -- which, by the way, was one extremely powerful ending -- the entire plot and flow in hindsight was necessary to bring out the story as seen from the eyes of the insider to the conf...( read more)lict diamond. A good film that highlights important issues that many have forgotten or never even knew about. It?s a shame then when a contrived Hollywood varnish is coated on what could have been a five star film! Still, worth watching though!

Very very good hard hitting emotional film of real life tradgedy. Decaprio is excellent and nails his slimy SA role (best performance yet) and Hounsou is also excellent as usual (a close Gladiator beater) making the whole film tremendous in both performance, location and looks.

...( read more)What you see is all the more harrowing as its based on reality which has happened and goes on now as we live. It shows how cruel and evil the human race can be whilst at the same time how decent a person can be when they want to be, its extremely powerful and thought provoking, a true classic.

what a powerful movie. it's really upsetting to see the conflict and war caused over diamonds and disgusting to see how we aren't doing anything and are even making the problem worse by keeping the majority of the diamonds locked up to drive up the prices. diamonds aren't rare. t...( read more)hey're as common as pebbles. gas is rarer than they are. and what's even worse is what's going on in darfur. i mean, they aren't even fighting over anything. they're just killing each other and the U.S. is pretending like nothing is happening. instead, we are over in iraq for no reason when we should really be helping to prevent the mass genocide that's occurring in africa right now.

A Sad but wickedly enjoyable movie. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I recently attended an event called We day which was put on by the free the children foundation. At we day there was a child solider from Africa who spoke, and his speech was so powerful. Most of t...( read more)he events in this movie (Concerning child soldiers) are true things that do happen! So it is from my understand that this movie is very realistic, which what makes it so powerful & disturbing at the same time. These events did indeed take place, and they still do in Africa. (Child soldiers) & camps (tent cities). Which is sad, so I hope that after seeing this movie, you are inspired to do something, to help others, to speak out & give a voice to those who have none!
