stunning fight sequences! a visually feast for the eyez
  • December 27, 2009
What a disappointment! I love the anime film and had high hopes, but this mess was difficult to even finish. It barely has any resemblance to the storyline of the anime, and the story they made up instead is dull, sloppy, and just plain boring. The two stars are for the choreo...( read more)graphy and cinematography, the only redeeming features of this film. If you like the anime, DON'T BOTHER WATCHING THIS.

action flick starring Jun Ji-hyun, Allison Miller, Masiela Lusha and Koyuki. directed by Chris Nahon.

based on the live action anime film of the same name, the film follows Saya (Ji-hyun), a half-human half-vampire, who hunts down other vampires and demons.

in a post-Matrix...( read more) world, it is difficult to get excited about most fight sequences, but this one has a few scenes that are very well done. beautiful visuals and great action made this one entertaining.

    pretty damn good.

animation-based movie, real person acting, but lack of the story line
  • December 23, 2009
So this is how you butcher an anime. Below average acting, effects. So much wrong with this movie. I don't even wanna start. They extended the story with some stupid changes in the storyline and ended up making a below average product. Watch the original anime movie instead. Action was good the sequences but the computer generated vampires Demons not so good!! it was like watching a movie done in the late 90s and the story was murdered compared to the real anime and let's leave it at that!!

On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that ...( read more)youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling." Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base's general that Saya learns of her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection

Blood: The Last Vampire brings to life an English language live-action feature movie of the original Japanese anime feature film from a producer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. Gianna Jun (My Sassy Girl, Daisy) stars in the film as Saya, a 400-year-old demon-hunting vampire slayer working undercover in Japan for a secret organization, on a mission in the Vietnam War era.

In 1970, the four hundred year-old skilled samurai Saya is sent to the Kanto High School in an American military base in Tokyo by the Council, a secret society that has been hunting vampires for centuries. Saya has the appearance of a teenager but is the tormented half-breed creature with the soul of her human father and the powers and need of blood of her vampire mother. She is obsessed to face the powerful demon Onigen that killed her father. In the base, Saya saves Alice McKee, who is the daughter of General McKee and commander of the base, from the attack of several vampires. When General McKee is killed by a member of the Council, Alice runs to the hotel where Saya is lodged. They join forces and go to the countryside to chase Onigen.

I have decided I am not a fan of Japanese style stories. This film was lame and uninteresting beyond the visuals.
  • December 17, 2009
fell very very short of expectations, had to watch in 2 seatings, yes it was that bad
  • December 17, 2009
The live action version of Blood The Last Vampire isn't too bad. The plot starts off the same as the anime but veers off to a different territory halfway through. Jeon Ji-hyeon I thought was great as the half human half vampire slayer Saya. The fights were cool enough but the CGI...( read more) effects were terrible. It lets this movie down so badly and so does the crappy ending. The movie isn't a total disaster by a long shot but it could have been so much better.

they change it alot making almost the same on the market the anime version is more interesting and more different than most vamp movies i say the one who made this movie ruined it well can i say fucked up?

Good movie, although I think they could have done a little better job on the villianous monsters. I believe they were supposed to be werewolves, but they looked more like ghouls.
  • December 10, 2009
this was a pretty good adaptation to the anime movie. I enjoyed it,
  • December 9, 2009
I was pleasantly surprised by this film, initially shrugging it off due to the huge resurgence of Vampire related movies and tie-ins.

This film has received more bad reviews than I think necessary as it really is a fun film to watch, given that the CGI in some scenes are quite d...( read more)ated for a recent film. The film really does appeal to me as an action/sci-fi movie based around an old Manga comic series featuring a vampire hunting Asian school girl.
If you can look past the CGI and slightly confusing plot then you will enjoy this popcorn flick, I certainly did.
  • December 8, 2009
They need to make more chinese/japanese stunt movies like this. Serious stunts, love the mix of villains and traditional sword fights!
  • December 8, 2009
A major departure from the anime, which manages to much more eloquently convey in 48 minutes what this movie does in an hour and a half. In particular, the dialogue seems a lot hokier than the original, cheapening the overall vibe of the film.

Worth watching, if only for the wel...( read more)l-choreographed and bloody scenes of carnage and the fact that it is a Japanese/American production starring a Korean actress speaking Japanese and English and filmed in China and Argentina.
  • December 8, 2009
it was longer than the original (2002) because it started at the beginning of the original and went at least twice as far down the story line. It was modified a bit but it was very good lies a modified I think different from the original in significant parts of the story!
  • December 7, 2009
For a film based on an animé, this isn't bad. Good wire work and fight choreography, decent performances and effects (but dodgy CGI at times), it tries to fill in the backstory for the lead character and introduce additional characters to pad out the slim original plot to a featu...( read more)re length. Can't see it worrying the Twilight saga's box office, though.

the action scenes were very bloody and intense and it seemed as though there were lots of different movie ideas thrown together. • December 4, 2009
This undeniably is a movie that lacks some imaginable elements of a good action / horror. It entails poor special effects and action scenes that are heavily described as naïve and amateur. The complete lack of the essence of having a heroine, immortalized by a cute and silent vam...( read more)pire named Saya (Jun Ji-Hyun) with a sword that kills each of her kind is arguably an omitting of the main subject out of scene. But that is not the case; I see some of the characters totally not needed for the plot to rise into the climax. Best example is Alice (Allison Miller) of which I think is just an ornament in this film. Saya herself is a really good subject in this film since she has a very interesting personality and character. She could fight the other vampires without the accompaniment of Alice. But don't get me wrong, I just see Alice's omission from the story a convenient way to apprehend fully and understand Saya a little more since she is the center of attraction in here. But then again, from time to time, you will then realize what Alice's worth is in this film. Without her naturally, our heroine might have gone dead because of thirst from blood. And without her, we could not have a rather mysterious ending. But forgive my being harsh to the character, I just see her irrelevant. She is just another factor to balance the power in this film. Saya may be the best heroine in this fictional world, but she needs to have a weakness, and that is represented by Alice, a mortal, fragile and prone to death.

Saya, a Japanese lady, is centuries old now. She has a mission to exterminate all the evil forces in this world because she too was a victim of it. Being a member of "The Council", Saya is determined to finish all the evil connections and slay their most revered master Onigen. In her typical Japanese school lady outfit, she fights with the vampires with her sword that too is as old as she is. A samurai back in her childhood taught her about basic combat, and what she learned, she has applied. But after her master was attacked by evil ninjas lead by their master Onigen, Saya's fury reached its maximum level and she decided to eliminate every single member of the counter society.

Saya like the others in this film is a vampire. She discovered this truth back centuries ago. She was involved romantically with a boy same as her age. But one night, she taught she was dreaming that she attacked him, and later she knew that she was not dreaming. She attacked him, and ate his blood straightforwardly. In some parts, we see Saya drinking blood deposited in a glass bottle. She does it to avoid attacking innocent individuals because she is the heroine in this film, and she does not want anybody to get hurt.

To add more color to the scenes, and the storyline itself, the film is photographed with a seemingly fictional and unbelievable world of computer graphics and comic-like appeal. It surely does not invite realism in the ambiance because it definitely looks artificial. The monsters created are not ferociously-looking but rather tamed ugly creatures that are sketched in a non-creative process or whatsoever. There are some stunts that are left animated and never edited to become more real-looking. The blood surging from the cut parts of people look animated. The way things are arranged are all messed-up bringing us to fantastical new dimensions every time we see the hilarious special effects, and visuals that are made for entertaining kids.

The plot gives us a broad representation of ordinary characters, with nothing new to offer, and a vampire slayer who is also a member of their kind. In short, it never is a great film nor a good one at all. But enough from being too cruel, the only thing I see reliable in this film is the heroine herself, or should I say the actress who plays the heroine. I've seen Jun Ji-Hyun (English name Gianna) in several Korean romantic flicks before and I think, she is one of those with great appeal and presence when subjected in front of the camera. Come to think of it, in this film, she is not as dumb as other vampires look, knowing that she is one of them. She has covered the limits of good stage presence and well-done acting and has extended it into certain tolerable levels. She basically is not just an ornament but a true asset in this movie. Her youthful façade amplifies the excitement in drama scenes and she seems always energetic although she talks less, and often fronts a blank face.

I think Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is one of the major influences of this film, because some fight scenes are shot that way, but not too good enough to emulate.

If you want to try other quality films which star Korean actress Jun Ji-Hyun, try "Daisy" and "Windstruck"; quite melodramatic but worth a watch, I guess. "My Sassy Girl" is her most overrated one but that defined her career as a premium Korean star and made her well known for her character actually. If you are, on the other hand, looking for true quality taste of horror, I suggest seeing the classics first, Nosferatu, Dracula, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Frankenstein, Psycho, etc.,

"Blood: The Last Vampire" is just another kid's kind of story, with violent visuals and morbid epitome of a beautiful vampire heroine, played by a good actress, and supported by amateur cast. The director is more concerned with the visuals which filled most of the play time with fight scenes, violence, and corny camera shots that have inconsistent lighting due to the putting in of animated visual effects. Don't get me wrong, I do not hate this film, I just don't like the way it was presented.

Not as good as the anime but it was nice to see things in a live-action film. It's a good entertainer.

I thought that it very good almost a cross between kill bill and the martix, not sure how closely it follows the amine that it represents. It is dark kind of like the dark night, it does need a little more to the plot but suspect that it will be come a cult classic like Donnie Darko

This was one movie I was looking forward to, without having seen anything else to do with it. It just sounded cool. Well, it wasn't.
