Plot:
"Suspense in a void" is how critic Pauline Kael described this action-packed hit from 1983. In other words, this is one of those flashy, superbly crafted high-tech thrillers in which the star is a mac...( read more

Scheider plays a police officer assigned the duty of piloting a helicopter sporting groundbreaking technology. However all is not as it seems as Scheider's worldweary policeman cottons on to a sinister scheme regarding the motives of the chopper, naturally Malcolm McDowell portrays the ringleader behind the conspiracy. The helicopter concept and the possibilities it presents is interesting but inevitably in this sort of action flick, silliness seeps in and cliches fall into place including one which involves Scheider's character having served in the war, cue haunting flashbacks. Typically 80's style camerawork and lighthearted exchanges between Scheider (once again proving his reliability as a leading man) and Daniel Stern's young cop keep things moving though and the aerial 'shoot em up' at the end is exciting if commonplace in this sort of film.
Although suffering a bit from James Bond syndrome, in which each and every one of the title helicopter's arsenal of weaponry is employed exactly once during the final act of the film, this 1983 Roy Scheider/Malcolm McDowell thriller is still a fun ride. I also love how almost every line of dialgoue serves as foreshadowing for a later scene. Now *that's* economy of screenwriting.
High tech action yarn with fine acting by Scheider, Oates and Stern with McDowell playng a perfect sneering baddie. Cool dogfights with a bit of humor thrown in..this is one thrilling ride
A decent suspenseful action flick that has more good in it than bad. Decent cast, decent storyline. Good, but not great.
I'll give this a three, though I do remember enjoying it a lot, I have a tough time recalling what I liked about it. I do however know that I really enjoyed McDowell as the baddie, he was the reason I rented it.
"I've been trying to get you all night. Why don't you answer your fucking beeper? I just wanna tell you, Jack, that the next time I'm suspended, so is my fucking beeper!"
A good classic 80's conspiracy action thriller by John Badham with Roy Scheider, William Stern, Warren Oates and Malcolm McDowell.
Not a bad flick. This was good for the days when everything was about a super powered vehicle of some sort. The story is good and the acting wasn't half bad.
Weapons of the future in 1983 are pretty hohum these days but good vs bad, conspiracy theory flicks are still the same every decade and this kept me and my mates entertained when it hit the big screen.
because malcolm mcdowell is just sooo gorgeous, the film isnt very good but who cares if mm is in it? it could be about war and it'll still be worth a watch!
Entertaining is a good word for this film. All the actors do a great job, and the flying is utterly amazing if not somewhat unrealistic. A few points in the film were a teeny bit predictable, but nothing to spoil the film. It was fun to see a very young Daniel Stern.
A get your attention plot line with corrupt government officials against the 'good guys" is a winner almost every time. The helicopter in this one is simply unbelievable. Especially the part when it shoots down a pair of F-16's. If they could have made the chopper a bit more believable this baby might have had wings. Still not a bad watch and the characters pull off their roles respectfully.
Even when I was a teenage boy, I still found this dull. Basically a helicopter gunship goes round shooting things and erm...well, that's about it. There isn't even that much action.
Back in the day was a cool movie with the super cool helicopter. Today, a really, really cheesy movie.
Entertaining action movie, not a classic, but worth watching for Roy Schneider who as always, is a superb leading man, and a convincing action hero.
A very great action film, the plot is really good and the acting is really awesome. Blue Thunder has a great music score, too. Roy Scheider, Daniel Stern, Malcolm McDowell, Candy Clark, and Waren Oates give great performances in this classic 1983 film. The helicopter is awesome.
A little dated now. Good 'cutting edge' idea for the 80's. Not a bad film. Entertaining if you haven't seen it before.
Hehehe this movie is one hell of a good time!! Roy Scheider is kick ass like always and Malcolm McDowell is cool and slimy as the slightly underused villian. I enjoyed this flick and think it has major rewatchability. Why i never saw this back in the day, i don't know. Now i need to get to WARGAMES hehe!! DAMN FUN flick that is good with a 6pack!! Watch this with a bunch of friends or alone at 3am like a shut-in like me lol.
Well even though it's from 1983, it's a good movie. I mean that it's done well.
It didn't happen like so much..but well, stuff did happen. :P
The Blue Thunder looks really modern, it could be in a movie from the late 90's
Fairly entertaining movie. Can be counted as those few good helicopter movies. Ned more action though.
I watched this to death when it first came out and I just got cable back in 83. I think I still know it by heart.
