Hypnotic masterpiece!Although I believe Lynch will go down in history as one of the greats,I think Blue Velvet will always be seen as his personal watershed movie, the one that really put him on the map--the seeds for almost all of his later work are in here--when i first saw this in '86,I came out of the theatre feeling like I was on acid--life-changing stuff!
I saw this for the first time when I was about twelve years old and I've seen it about 15 times since then. It never seems to lose it's impact. David Lynch sucks me right in.
Haunting Lynch film is both disturbing and hilarious at the same time. The opening scene is just incredible, showing the sweet small town on the outside, and then the camera literally digs under the ground with the dirt and the bugs. Excellent use of symbolism. I don't know if I should be laughing or disturbed by Dennis Hopper's "rape" scene, but his performance is so brilliantly over the top that I can't help but to laugh and applaud it. This movie was so fucked up that it even got Roger Ebert pissed off (see DVD special features). Great stuff.
This is an amazing film, showing us the dark underbelly of suburbia. Dennis Hopper is a complete nut case, and he plays it so very real, just look into his eyes. A true modern masterpiece.

UPDATE 7-30-08 yeh, i friggin love it. genius, duh ------ I saw it for the first time yesterday, but I cannot thoroughly appraise it yet. I was a bit underwhelmed, but I do tend to have a hot or cold reaction on first screenings. My biggest gripe: needed more Ben (Dean Stockwell's character). This movie feels like the abridged version of Twin Peaks. Frank Booth is a great character, but Kay-Lo (Kyle MacLaughlin) was intolerable in this one (cept I did like that cheeky glance at his dangler). Need to rescreen a few more times before I can rate this one. Then again, Lynch is in that rare category where "ratings" are irrelevant to the degree that it's like asking a toaster its marital status. "So Fucked Up" highlight: the "zombified" yellow man
David Lynch is one twisted dude, and this movie pretty much affirms that. While startling with it's disturbing portrait of a seemingly pristine suburbia gone bad, the story telling is actually pretty reeled in and less bizarre than some of his other films. The movie opens up with a look at a picture perfect neighborhood, but we know quickly that there is steep darkness beneath the surface when Jeffrey (MacLachlan) comes across a severed ear in a field nearby. Having a insatiable curiosity to this mystery, Jeffrey wants to find out more, whether he can handle the truth or not. With a police detective's daughter (Dern) unveiling a few details of the case, Jeffrey and her go out to unlock the dirty secrets. Eventually Jeffrey gets himself dangerously close to the source, as he gets involved with one of the most psychopathic weirdos in film history, and has to untangle himself and an abused lounge singer from harm's way. The perspective of the story-telling is what really makes things click here. We are seemingly put into Jeffrey's position and are suffocated by the bizarre mystery. There is a sense of wanting to know but maybe not too much, and this shares some qualities of voyeurism with Alfred Hitchcock's classic "Rear Window"...but Lynch really pours on his trademark creepiness. Although pretty vulgar at times, there is a definite shock value that brings a lot of intensity and startles the viewer, and makes this movie standout. Lynch also brings forth certain ideas of love and humiliation and even beauty and how they can twistedly intertwine with each other. Anyone looking for something out of the ordinary should give this a look, but beware Dennis Hopper and his oxygen mask!
Although the whole "innocent person is shown a darker side of the world" has been done a million times, this is still a very good film with some wonderful scenes. I would have loved to see more of an effect on the lead character, a strengthening, but thats just me. Not something I'll probably ever see again, but something im glad I saw.
Perhaps the most sharply directed film in history, and further evidence of Lynch's masterful talent. MacLachlan and Hopper are perfect, and the lovely Laura Dern (with her incredible nose) gives a heart-breakingly wonderful performance- probably the best of her career in fact. The soundtrack is great, the script is flawless, and although Isabella Rossellini can't act to save her life, she is somehow totally right for that part. A spectacular film with so many incredible scenes that will never leave you, never!
Wow, a coherent David Lynch movie. It looks like I tend to give his incoherent ones 3 stars though, because they tend to be very well done visually, so this one probably won't do that much better. This was okay visually, and okay storywise, but a little cheesy. I'd compare it to Blood Simple. How many stars did I give that? 4? Well, we'll split the difference then.
David Lynch's Blue Velvet tells the tale of a college student (Kyle McLachlan) who upon coming home to take care of his ill father stumbles upon a human ear in a vacant lot behind his home. It's this ear that takes him on a ride that features a run down lounge singer, an all american high school sweetheart, and an icon of anger, violence and deviance. And it is a wild ride in deed. Lynch has crafted a film that has a feel that's ala Hitchcock and all the great thriller directors. You sit there watching, dread in the pit of your stomach as you think that what these characters plan to do is not the right course of action. The "Don't go in there!" syndrom of cinema. Lynch throws us some great visuals while keeping the film as dark as its subject matter. The main reason to take a look at this great flick is for Dennis Hooper's Frank Booth. Hooper plays this character in the over the top manner that only Dennis Hopper can dish out. His comeback performance for sure. I watched Blue Velvet at 1AM after being awake for twenty hours. I was tired. I wanted to go to sleep, but I couldn't look away from the film. I knew that I couldn't sleep because I had to know where this was going to end.
"Yup, that's a human ear alright." Wonderfully mad!! The cast is brilliant! Dennis Hopper, Dean Stockwell and Brad Dourif are perfect. I'm pretty terrified of Isabella Rossellini's wig.
strangeness permeates everyday life in a storybook town...unique characters, unpredicatable situations and overall weirdness oozes from this tale...definitely an interesting watch
Very straightforward and basic film, and therefore a slight let down - expectations sadly affect my viewing experience, but I couldn't help having some for this. Has some moments of inspired genius, but overall quite overrated.
Lynch presents an average small-town American suburb as a clean safe and happy place, then explores beneath the surface and reveals a dark horrible evil underworld. 'Blue Vlevet' is a bold piece of film making, presenting graphic nudity in a disturbing manner. The film has so much symbolism. The actors and brilliant, including MacLachlan, as the first innocent college-boy, Hopper as the evil distasteful Frank Booth, and Rossellini, as the tortured damsel.
As usual, this Lynch film is artistic. It has a good music score and profound symbolism. Dean Stockwell's singing is unforgettable, the crazy Dennis Hopper is memorable either. Jeffery is somehow too meddlesome right?
Strange little movie I'm not even sure it could be classified as horror....it could almost be forgettable...but there are some disturbing sexual undertones
I have always be on the side that great characters hardly need any story at all to move around. Blue Velvet hardly has any story, but it also lacks any character that actually acts like a real human being. Also, all this "the dark side of a little town" would actually work if the whole film hasn't been made to look and feel phony and cartoonish.
Some might say that is the point, that this is suppose to be like a bizarre satire/fable and what not. But even a satire needs a solid base to make it's point or points more clear. Bizarre and crude situations are just pointless if they never actually feel as something that has a real impact in the characters or in the overall story. We never really care the least that Rosellini's character is getting toyed around, MacLachhlan teen detective character is dull, and even the creepy over-the-top Hopper ends up being like that guy that was chasing the smurfs when you put him next to all these other poorly written characters.
At the end, BV ends up being just a film where Dennis Hopper acts wack, with random scenes of crazyness, and nothing more. Maybe that's enough for some to make this a full cinematic experience, but it just wasn't for me. And hey, i'm all for crazy experimental stuff in films, but when the makers actually have an idea of what they're doing.
this is my absoloute favorite film. i love everything about it from the good music to the beutiful cinematography. dennis hopper's performance remains one of the gretest i've ever seen.
Hopper's performance is one of the best I've seen from any actor. Like any Lynch film it looks and sounds brilliant, but it is also one of his more straight forward, less psychological films.
