This is a well acted, bizzarre if not disturbing storyline. Not one i'd watch again but its difinately one to watch for the emotional journey of a girl who feels more comfortable portraying a boy.

Shocking!! Can't believe how cruel and sadistically some people are. Hilary Swank did an awesome job, thumbs up for her :D

Lana: Shut up, that's your business. I don't care if you are half monkey or half ape, I'm gettin' you out of here!

It is nevertheless a movie worth watching for the younger generation. It captivates the hidden drama in scenes of immense action and excitement. There is a big question of morality, a really big one, but the soul of the whole film lies underneath that controversial theme.

Direct...( read more)or Kimberly Peirce has set the dimension of the film into a semi-stage play of attitude and circumstance conflicting characters resulting into a bombardment of failures. The romance between Teena Brandon (Hilary Swank) and Lana Tisdel (Chloe Sevigny) has cultivated the theme for self expression and human rights for the third gender.

An excellent biopic about some of the last moments of Brandon Teena's life. Hillary Swank definately reassures anyone who sees this movie that she is a great actress.

I LOVED THE MOVIE!!! Hilary Swank played her charcter so well that I didn't realize that she wasn't a guy. This is one of my favorite time movies now.

This movie is a very sad movie..transgendered people are people just like anyone else....and they deserve to be happy..

Hilary Swank's ticket to stardom, Boys Don't Cry is a solemn effort to capture the controversial life and death of transexual Teena Brandon, the girl who wanted to be a boy.

I watched the film back in 2000, when it opened in cinemas in Greece. I was shocked and amazed. I still b...( read more)elieve it's a remarkable piece of film-making. I suppose I should revisit it at some point - see how it feels now that the hype has subdued.

What I remember - characteristically - from the movie theater, is that people were laughing during the most dramatic moment of the film, when Chloe Sevigny's character holds her dead lover in her arms, crying for the unbearable loss. I guess "real" people are even more cruel than the ones on celluloid......

"Dear Lana, By the time you read this I'll be back home in Lincoln. I'm scared of what's ahead, but when I think of you I know I'll be able to go on. You were right, Memphis isn't that far off. I'll be taking that trip down the highway before too long. I'll be waiting for you....( read more) Love always and forever, Brandon."- Brandon Teena

A great film (based on true events). Hillary Swank and Chloe Sevigny did a great job in this film. One of the best biopics I've watched. The movie was very simple but because of the acting, the movie became one of the best. Not a happy film definitely but satisfying. It's great to have at least a peak on Teena Brandon's life. I feel sad for Teena Brandon. With all the controversies, Hillary Swank deserves the award. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is thinking this. She deserves her Oscar.

Boys Don't Cry belongs to the kind of films that may leave a person traumatized when seen too young. It has very horrific images and a shocking story. Its power to stay in your heart and mind is indescribable, just to be utterly strengthened by one of the best female leading perf...( read more)ormances in cinema hystory. Well done film and a very powerful personal testament. Consequently, you take Hilary away and you get an average film with a good script.

Swank, Sevigny and Sarsgaard put in brilliant performances in Peirce's uneasy and powerful film, based on real life events. Recommended!

Good...but a horrible ending. Violent and scary...

Desgarradora historia sobre la intolerancia y el odio hacia los que son "diferentes".

Hard to see movie, which talks mainly about treatment that society gives to people who are different. Most of the film is quite boring, because it mainly insists about the lifestyle of that deep America in which the only interesting thing you can do is drinking, stealing cars, wh...( read more)ere no one has gone out from his/her town, and everybody laughs at the stupid jokes of the stupid guys over there. However, mainly in the last part of the film, the strength of the story makes you feel sorrow about the real fact that happened. Good initial story, but I don´t know if a film was the appropiate way to show it, or maybe it was a question of the way it was planned and how facts were presented. A problem I had is that I couldn´t the get the original subtitled version, so I lost Hilary Swank acting, but the pieces I saw in English were incredible.

weird and quite sad... but definitely worth a watch!

    Heartwreching, beautiful film.

I disagree with the academy and critics on this. I have nothing against homosexuality, but this was done all wrong. It's hard to admit or even doubt a movie if it's inspired and based on a true tragedy that's happened. This wasn't hard at all to get out.

Hillary Swank has the re...( read more)dneck charm to consume herself in this character and that's where it ends. She was not believable as a boy from the outside, nor in any other way. Her face and hair scream dike and to think that she's actually a male just doesn't fit together. Wasn't it obvious. Did the brutal interrogation of her sexual identity at least come by believable. Sure enough it did. Though, I have no confidence in her performance or appearance as Teena Brandon. The only close-cornered likeness was the hair-cut, and that was plainly off as well.

Teena Brandon had a strong face. It had intensity and masculinity heightened. She wasn't "butch", but she was easier to mistaken genders with. Instead of the jolly, always smiling Joe that Swank portrayed, the real Brandon was as persuaded with her sexuality as she was with her body. She wouldn't act like girl being a boy, she was a boy. No giggles, no pressure, no falseness or visible shed from her reality, just the mental build and nothing else.

Okay, so most adaptions don't go so in depth with each and every detail. More than most of the time events and dialog will be exaggerated. But characters need no change. History can never change, so leave it as it was remembered. Don't vary it on how either the audience would react to it or thinking a change might be the trick to spicing it up; forget all thoughts to change the past. Revive it, but don't harm it.

Heartbreaking true story. The entire cast is wonderful.

Don't get me wrong, it's super depressing and all, but would you really think of rewatching it?
  • July 27, 2009
modern love story, turned greek tragedy
  • July 16, 2009
Yes, Swank does give a good performance, it's everything else that is stupid. She dresses like a boy due to a "sexual personality disorder", starts hanging around with people who are clearly going to hurt her when they find out, and wants to marry Sevigny. Lo and behold they find...( read more) out and the last half hour is rape and murder. It's a really bleak film - true story or not.

A very emotional film to watch. The story is so unique, and knowing it is based on the true life of Teena Brandon makes it all the more sadder.

Hilary Swank is outstanding as Teena/ Brandon. She really embraces the role and makes you believe in her. She is convincing in her act...( read more)ing and very sincere. The rest of the cast is also well suited, particularly Chloë Sevigny and Peter Sarsgaard.

Although at times this film can be quite uncomfortable viewing, there are also moments within of hope and faith. In all, worth a watch.

Based on actual events. Brandon Teena is the popular new guy in a tiny Nebraska town. For a movie to be able to start off a "little" (emphasis on little) slow, and turn into a spectacle of both amazing acting, directing, and an amazing script is not only a rarity, but is almost unheard of. "Boys Don't Cry" is one of the most powerful films that I have ever seen. Ms. Hilary Swank embraced her character with open arms, and turned him into a hero. A incredibly hard task, considering a "few minor 'glitches'". The fact that this movie is based upon a true story only emphasizes the themes it is trying to portray. As a human race, it only makes sense that we should strive to accept our originality and differences, and celebrate them, rather than diminish them, and look upon them as being "bad". This movie is one that gives the audience the "complete package", and not just a pretty actress or soundtrack. As an all encompassing film, "Boys Don't Cry" is brilliant.
