    Chris Cooper's amazing performance makes this movie. The movie itself was ok but very interesting due to the fact the this shit really happened. I'm a big fan of Ryan Phillippe and have been since Cruel Intentions but I think he was miscast in this film. Other then that Not a bad...( read more) film.

At it's heart Breach i...( read more)s a spy thriller of the highest pedigree. Tense, compelling, gripping, unnerving, and very understated. The film relies heavily on suspence and the central character, of the story, Hanssen, played by a genius Chris Cooper who's performance is Oscar worthy. The film would easily have become mundane, had a weaker actor played the part. Cooper creates almost a second Hannibal, a murderous monster with higher things on his mind than killing, a cultured, genius and importantly a devoultly religious man. A member of the Catholic organization Opus Dei, and a fervent Catholic, Hanssen's character thickens as more layers are developed. Everyone, as the detective Eric (played by Ryan Phillippe) says 'mis-read him', from the CIA themselves, to Eric and to the audience. How can such a seemingly good man be so bad? Yet apperances aren't what they seem, and so the fun begins. The film works up to a grand finale, in which the audience is worked up with it. Like a Hitcockian film, suspence builds to a crachendo and explodes with power, then resolves. Importantly Breach doesn't give you the one thing your left dying for, a real glimpse into the mind of America's worst spy. As Hanssen himself says "The why doesn't matter really, does it?"

    Very well put together true story. Wonderful acting. I enjoyed this movie.

    The story of Robert Hanssen is curious. How could a man that looked so normal on the outside be a spy? Breach doesn't really offer an answer and is better for it. Chris Cooper instead plays Hanssen to complexity. It seems throughout the movie that even Hanssen wasn't fully aw...( read more)are of his motives. Maybe it was a bet to himself just to see if he could do it.

    The biggest weakness of the film is Laura Linney. I like Laura Linney, so it's with regret that I say she's cardboard in this movie. She plays a characture of an FBI agent as if she watched B grade spy movies to fill the part. Scenes she's not in are some of the best.

    Ultimately, the plot suffers by never making up its mind if it is a thriller or a character piece. It waffles. It would have been better to cut the bits of thriller (that don't really thrill all that effectively) and stick with allowing the characters to move and interact a bit more. It's frustrating to have a brilliant scene between Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe cut into by a scene in which (Oh no!) Cooper is about to find out who Phillippe is.

    Without a doubt, Cooper makes Breach a good film. It's packing too much into the movie that makes it less than great.

    Best picture contender with a different leading man? Just about. I mean, this was SO close. Also, GREAT ending. You know it's great when you have a great ending and it's not a twist!

    "Breach", Is a Espionage Thriller, that is so tauntingly scary. You already know how it is going to end, yet It keeps you on the edge of your seat, and Makes you wonder how Anyone could have did that to his own Country, and How someone could be a counter-spy trying to bring him d...( read more)own.

    This film is one electryifying Thriller. Phillipe and Cooper are tiop Notch. Cooper Portays Hanssen Perfectly to the Tee. Phillipe finally shows his real acting qualities, unlike In "I Know What You Did Last Summer".
    " Four out of Four Stars" An Almost Perfect Film.

    Droll looking cinematography, which makes for a realistic thriller and with a great lead performance by Chris Cooper, the film keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.

    Not quite as intense as I was hoping, in fact not very spy-ish at all, which is probably more realistic (which makes sense since it's based on a true story) but ultimately is less entertaining. Luckily the ever amazing Chris Cooper is here to save the day. His eyes in that final shot will haunt me.
