Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
A perfect example of why directors (and even us brilliant professional critics) can often be completely in the dark about what works.
-
Variety Staff, Variety
There is little rhyme or reason to most of the action, but it's all highly palatable.
-
Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
Though it's almost impossible, try to sit back sometime and enjoy this 1938 Howard Hawks masterpiece not only for its gags, but for the grace of its construction, the assurance of its style, and the richness of its themes.
-
Geoff Andrew, Time Out
One of the finest screwball comedies ever.
-
Douglas Pratt, Hollywood Reporter
The speedy, 102-minute film is a total delight, and the performances are so invigorating that it can withstand many multiple viewings without losing its sparks.
-
Frank S. Nugent, New York Times
If you've never been to the movies, Bringing Up Baby will be all new to you -- a zany-ridden product of the goofy farce school. But who hasn't been to the movies?
-
Sean Axmaker, Parallax View
Bringing Up Baby's narrative and thematic directions have much in common with those of Shakespearean comedy.
-
Nell Minow, Common Sense Media
Classic screwball comedy stars Hepburn, Grant.
-
Gabe Leibowitz, Film and Felt
Grant plays the timid Dr. David Huxley with the proper restraint and tics.
-
-
, Film4
One of the highest high points of the entire screwball comedy genre, with its sharp script and wonderfully balanced leads.
-
Emanuel Levy, EmanuelLevy.Com
Hard to believe that Hawks' lunatic screwball comedy, with top-notch turns by Grant and Hepburn, was underrated by critics and commercial flop at the time; history proves otherwise.
-
Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
One of Hollywood's greatest comedies.
-
Forrest Hartman, Reno Gazette-Journal
The great screwball comedies of the 1930s and '40s are polar opposites of today's, which makes revisiting them a joy.
-
Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing
One of those movies that seems to improve upon repeat viewings.
-
Jeremiah Kipp, Slant Magazine
Bringing Up Baby remains an over-appreciated curiosity piece, but the DVD treatment is all-around first rate.
-
Jeremiah Kipp, Slant Magazine
If Hawks had a real gift it was the ability of moving things along.

There are many who make the argument that Bringing Up Baby is a forgotten treasure ... Don't believe a word of it.

Cary Grant (in a pair of glasses) plays a milquetoast nerdy-nerd scientist who's been assembling pieces of a dinosaur skeleton for years. While schmoozing a rich lady's lawyer on the golf course, he runs into Katharine Hepburn, a scatter-brained (yet attractive) lunatic who brings trouble with her wherever she goes, especially to the scientist. For good measure, they throw a leopard named baby (whose favorite song is "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby") into the mix and you have what might be director Howard Hawks' screwiest screwball comedy, lighter-than-air and yet heartily amusing. If there can be any criticism (and really, it's hard to take too critical a glance at something so lightweight), it may be with Hepburn and her portrayal of Susan Vance. The character is willfully ignorant, is mainly used as a means of advancing the comedic situations. But in working so hard to achieve this ignorant arrogance, the film loses a little bit of it's momentum (and good will). It's only once the film really gets rolling that Hepburn's comedic inadequacies can be overlooked (in fact, the film is almost a tale of two performances from Hepburn, the overly affected and forced first half of the performance, and the more flowing feel the performance achieves by the end). It's an unusual film to say the least.

Katherine Hepburn's performance alone is dynamic in this comedic classic. Bringing Up Baby is comedy gold with brilliance in its ensemble. The laughter is timeless, the dialogue is crisp and, once again, Hepburn and Grant formulate a charming duo. 4/5

"Bringing Up Baby" sucks. I really have no idea what this film is about aside from the fact that it involves a leopard, a bone, and a really annoying lady. Maybe I played too much Temple Run while watching it.

An eccentric heiress takes a shine to a stuffy paleontologist and then inadvertently reduces his life to chaos in her attempt to keep him from marrying another woman. Considered a classic by most, Bringing Up Baby is one of those old school comedies that defines the term "screwball". It's essentially a farce involving a pet leopard who gets loose while the professor attempts to conceal his identity from a wealthy dowager while hunting for his missing bone that has been stolen by her pet dog and, well, you get the picture. It's really just a lot of falling over, running around and walking in and out of rooms while various onlookers are frightened by the big cat and no-one ever believing the unlikely explanations proffered for the various ridiculous situations. Cary Grant once more shows his talent for comedic timing but although I'm a big fan of Katharine Hepburn, here I just found her constant jabbering and trickery rather irritating. The "plot" is also just a series of absurd coincidences, which is fine if it's funny but it didn't really make me laugh. Comedy is a very personal thing and as I prefer the screwball comedies that rely on snappy dialogue rather than slapstick, this one didn't really do it for me. I'll take His Girl Friday over it any day.

This movie is really funny, although it does get a little too silly in the middle, it gets back on track in the end. A must-see movie.

Not the best Howard Hawks - Cary Grant film, but still very cute!

i must begin by stating that howard hawks is one of my favorite directors of all time and cary grant is growing on me more and more all the time, so while im not a big katherine hepburn fan i had high hopes for this comedy that is still considered among the greats of all time. this was possibly the most headache inducing film i have ever seen. i literally felt pain in my head watching these "zaney" antics that were built on rediculous coincidences and confusing diologues that made me want to stop the film numerous times. the characters were dry and unlikeable and most of the sequences were uncomfortable to watch. it keeps itself from the worst of the worst by reputation and starpower, but one of the most frustrating and disappointing films i have ever seen.

In this screwball comedy, heiress Susan is determined to catch a stuffy paleontologist and uses her pet leopard, Baby, to help get his attention. The elements of this farce include a yappy terrier who steals and buries an irreplaceable fossilized bone, a pompous big game hunter, a rich old aunt, a jealous fiancée, and a case of mistaken identity involving a second, and vicious, leopard
Oddly I haven't gotton round to watching many films of the 1930's but I hope this is the start of me watching more in the future. I've also not seen a lot of Katharin Hepburn or Cary Grant. Now I feel I've seen more of them than I could have in 5 of their films. The brilliance of Brnging up Baby is the two leads and that's why I enjoyed it so much.
I would imagine this is the start of me watching more comedies from the 30's and thirtees as I enjoyed this one so so much. Bringing Up Baby is now 70 years old and is a timeless classic. Argubably it's conisdered one of the great scre-ball comedies ever made and I agree with that 100%. The narrtive is still orginal 70 years on and not at one point did yu have some idea of what was coming. Even to today's standards the writing in this is superb indeed. the absurd situations make for an hilaious disp;ay of comedy which left me laughing and laughing. Haven't laughed like that in a film for a long while. the one liners and brilliant three way dialogue makes you sit up and laugh at a film which still feels fresh and vibrant 70 years on. Superb indeed.
I also seem to be watching a far few film of Howard Hawks and this is no exception. The direction here is brillliant as the comic timing of both leads fits the bill perfectly. From Grant's geekish type look to Hepburns awkwardness around his character just makes for a perfect on screen couple. HA! It's still mkaes me laugh now especially in the scene where they hunt out David's dinosoaur bone. Love the awkrdnes in her voice and distinct sarcastic tone which makes me laugh...still.
I highly recomend this one, hilaious film. Just don't be put off by the year it was made as believe me you will laugh and laugh.
Comedy classic.....
10/10

Most people don't think at Katherine Hepburn as 'funny', but she and Cary Grant are hilarious in this film.

one of the mighty classics from the versatile howard hawks, and this settles as the enormous base of screwball comedy gendre.
the gender reversal between grant and hepburn is apparently figured as grant's tucked in a female silky nightgown then utters "because i just went gay all of a sudden!" gayness then is still utilized as joy, but the pun is undeniably amusing. hepburn declares enough mettle of her female individuality since it's her susie who solicits grant as her love of life, after her strike of determination, she squeezes up every frivolously chidlike little scheme to keep grant over her palm, courting him without reservation. despite such strong assertion of her vigorous want, her character remains mischieviously likable without descending into a nymphomaniac, even she always intervenes in the conversation to interrupt you.
even grant evidently plays a milder nerdy character whose awkwardness causes his own mishapping to get stuck with trouble-maker susie, but he evolves himself with his suaveness. as several times, hepburn's character sinks him into recurring irretrievable jams, his character still demonstrates great demeanors as a gentleman to tolerate hepburn in spite of his obvious imapatience. (who wouldn't be?ha) as a fashion critic comments on grant that the reason why he's so mysteriously attractive is: always women chase behind him, he rarely takes any active move, always gentily considerate enough to yield to the ladies that contributes to his ultimate status of lady's man, complimented with his gorgeous male beauty, who wouldn't fall for the charm of cary grant? huh?
the episode of leopard creates a sense of absurdness in this particular gendre, and a uniquely applied plotline, refreshingly unusual but believable in the same time. it is laughably hilarious as the leopard is fond of listening "i can't give you anything but love"...and the sequence of chasing after puppy george in search of the dinosaur bone is also another ingenious comic touch.
even under this prosperously arranged condition as everything goes topsytuvy, love could still occur and nourished....as she sabotages his four years of dinasour model, she wails "could you still love me"..then they embrace with through acceptance and mutual affections. simply cute, maybe a bit too cute.

The plot is difficult to follow, and the ending is contrived, but it's too funny to really care.
-
it's obvious the stars are enjoying themselves so you do too.
-
One of the greatest comedies ever. If this movie doesn't make you laugh you've got some serious problems.

Bringing Up Baby is considered one of the very best of the screwball comedies that dominated the 30's I'm a bit dumbfounded at the films acclaim and appeal. The Baby of the title is actually a young leopard, a concept that is squeezed for every once of comic appeal possible. Bringing Up Baby has fast paced and quick witted dialog that is sometimes difficult to follow. The famous gay line (which must have been a doozey with the censors) was a cinematic first offering perhaps another meaning behind it's typical definition: Joyous or Fancy-Free. The film frustratingly was able to hang on to both AFI's original 100 Greatest list and their 2007 updated version. Again I don't see the big deal. Bringing Up Baby did not stand-out in anyway to me from another other screwball romance film of the time but I'm obviously in the minority here.

Personally, I think its fucking hysterical. And yes I'm well aware its zany antics is typical of the period, however the film's plot is just so strange (A leopard? Really?) that it stands apart from many films of its era and the chemistry between Grant and Hepburn is something transcendent. They create comedy gold together.
