Tom Hardy, Matt King, William Darke

In 1974, a misguided 19 year old named Michael Peterson decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawn-off shotgun and a head full of dreams he attempted to rob a post offic...( read more  read more... )e. Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to 7 years in jail, Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement. With an intelligent, provocative and stylized approach, "Bronson" (based on a true story) follows the metamorphosis of Mickey Peterson into Britain's most dangerous prisoner, Charles Bronson.

Brutal and stylish but impenetrable, it never tries to explain his actions and lacks the charm and humour of 'Chopper'.

How do you define performance art?

Charlie Bronson (Tom Hardy), Britain's most famous prisoner, construes it as bare-knuckle boxing with security guards.

Bronson was born Michael Peterson in 1974. Since 17, he has spent the entirety of his life in jail - most of the sentence in...( read more) solitary confinement. Specializing in butt-naked scuffles with guards and an unhealthy habit of taking hostages, Peterson was re-dubbed Charlie Bronson after the famous actor who, appropriately, appeared in "Death Wish".

Today, Bronson is a highly acclaimed poet and novelist. His latest novel, released in 2008, is a self-penned biography entitled "Loonyology: In My Own Words".

Tom Hardy's performance as the title character is appropriately over-the-top and physical. Although the character is lacking on the page, Hardy's fearless energy makes director Nicolas Winding Refn's Charlie Bronson a memorable antihero - justly (and unjustly) declared this generation's Alex (from Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange").

The filmmaking is certainly no-holds-barred - it's gritty, raw, and enormously stylish in it's depictions of violence. It's a one-man show, a sort of embrace on Bronson's performance art at the expense of logic and deeper psychological implications. Despite a few brilliant flourishes, however, such as Bronson's final excursion with a hostage, not even Hardy's powerhouse performance can bring life to a rather dull film.

Refn uses some highly-literal devices to tell his story - sometimes Bronson appears in a sort of pitch-black confessional booth, and other times he performs on stage in front of a roaring crowd. Once the audience's interest in such experimentation wears out, however, the film becomes increasingly tedious with it's incapability of building any sort of narrative momentum.

A wise choice to tackle this as a theatrical play instead of the usual bio-pic-by-the-numbers film. The movie does seem to never fully make it's mind about how it should present Bronson, but it manages to engage the viewer with the antics of a man dancing in the thin line of show...( read more) man and mad man. Tom Hardy is the main strenght of the film for sure, the solid suporting cast helps a lot too. The celebration of Bronson's violence as some kind of artistic achievement is a morally debatable point, but i won't deny how fun it was to see him punching guard after guard. At the end i felt Bronson is like a kid who wants attention, he just doesn't know a good way to get it.

Tom Hardy is the shit. My new favorite young actor, hands down. Dude down right transforms himself every time he comes on screen. That's a bingo!

The movie had an interesting setup, with half of it taking place on a "stage" in front of an "audience" in Bronson's imagination.....( read more).and the other half...well...in prison with him beating the ever living shit out of cops.

His character alone made the movie incredible. If it had a bit more production quality, this movie would be absolutely fantastic. As it stands, 7/10.

"The Man. The Myth. The Celebrity."

A young man who was sentenced to 7 years on prison for robbing a post office ends up spending 30 years in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter ego, Charles Bronson.

Bold, brutal, disturbing and funny in equal measure. This is a fascinating biopic of a man that was and still is a complete enigma. Central to the film's success is the performance of Tom Hardy in the lead role. Both fearless and chaotic in equal measure, he brings forth the menace and unpredictable nature of the character of Bronson inflicting it on the audience. Equally, the cinematography is high on perfect, drawing the viewer into the cell with Bronson.

However, meaning and structure is imposed where it is unwanted. The film tries to draw meaning and conclusions about Bronson were there are none. Its ending is disjointed as a result. Its difficult to criticise a film for being a film though

Nevertheless it is endlessly entertaining, stylish and never, ever dull.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The movie takes on a fearsome purity, refusing to find reasons, indifferent to motives, not even finding causes and effects. It is 92 minutes of rage, acted by Tom Hardy. full review

A.O. Scott, The New York Times

A bit like Stanley Kubrick's Clockwork Orange reimagined as a one-man stage show and stripped of any political implications. full review

October 8, 2009
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Tom Hardy is pure dynamite in the role, beefing up 35 pounds to play Britain's most notorious prisoner. full review

October 7, 2009
Armond White, The New York Press

Hardy's portrayal is more than a real-life impersonation of Bronson; it realizes the Stunt Movie opportunity to present an actor's thoroughly romantic admiration of force. full review

October 5, 2009
Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

Bronson is a fast, ferocious, wickedly funny portrait of one man's acceptance of his bone-deep animalism. full review
