Brooklyn Rules

Alec Baldwin, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jerry Ferrara, Kevin Thoms, Mena Suvari, Monica Keena, Robert Turano, Scott Caan, Ursula Abbott

Written by three-time Emmy winner Terence Winter (The Sopranos), Brooklyn Rules is a powerful story of loyalty, friendship, and sacrifice. Set in Brooklyn circa 1985 against the backdrop of John Gott...( read more  read more... )i’s rise to power, the film revolves around three lifelong friends whose different ambitions threaten to shake their enduring bond. Michael (FREDDIE PRINZE JR.), the narrator, is a lovable charmer with the soul of a con man who successfully scams his way into the pre-law program at Columbia University. In contrast to Michael’s desire to leave the Brooklyn streets behind, his close friend Carmine (SCOTT CAAN), a handsome lady-killer enamored by the Mafia lifestyle, wants nothing more than to stay there. Rounding out the trio is Bobby (Entourage’s JERRY FERRARA), an endearing cheapskate who longs for a simple life of working at the Post Office and settling down with his fiancée. While at Columbia, Michael falls for a beautiful young student named Ellen (MENA SUVARI), a society girl whom he initially wins over with his preppy schoolboy cover. As their relationship blossoms, leaving the streets behind seems increasingly possible, but when Carmine catches the eye of Caesar (ALEC BALDWIN), a feared mobster who controls their Brooklyn neighborhood, Michael and Bobby are drawn into that world despite their reluctance to get involved. Brooklyn Rules comes down to the choices faced by three young men when the right path is not always the easiest to follow, and when being a loyal friend can mean making the ultimate sacrifice.

This film tried a little too hard to be a cheap similar film to ?A Bronx Tale?, but didn?t quite live up to it in the way of casting, storyline or dialogue. Freddie Prinze Jr narrates throughout, which makes it all a little too cheesy for a serious gangster film. With Alec Bal...( read more)dwin as the main attraction in the film, I?m sure many people would have passed this one by.

If you can watch this film without all the comparisons to other Gangster films, then it?s a passable story, but there have been too many better movies within this genre to become any kind of a contender.

Three Brooklyn boys growing around the mafia whilst getting older.....Despite this it is actually a really good movie.

Just trash. The movie just dragged on, and nothing seemed to interest me. Freddie Prinze Jr's acting is laughable.

freddy prince junior, in a suprisinly ok performance, and scott caan doing good work, as a film very goodfellas inspired, especially voice over, with a eye for its 80s newyork setting, and the charactors brushings with mob life

I was really impressed with this film. I didn't think it would be as good as it was. It isn't a big budget movie or one that has had a lot of publicity but it was very good. Everything about this film was awesome...the acting, plot, action etc.

I loved this movie. I am fan of all 3 guys here....and Mena Suvari of course. I totally cried when they killed off Jerry Ferrara's character though. He was so on his way to the good stuff.

This is more of a film about friendship than it is about the mob. You grow up in Brooklyn the mob is there and a part of your childhood and these kids grew up in Brooklyn. Very nice performances. Freddie Prinze pulls it off here and he's so not Brooklyn (or even so not East Co...( read more)ast for that matter) that he shows his acting chops well. Jerry Ferarra perfection and believable - he actually did grow up there in the 80s which is the time period this was in. (captured very well I might add) Scott Caan was great! Look forward to much more from him. Alec Baldwin was a good choice for this role and he doesn't let us down. Only one I didn't care for was Mena Suvari - something bout her is just...off. A great story of friendship and what real loyalty is and what the rules of loyalty are - in Brooklyn.

A descent, second-string wiseguy movie in the vein of "A Bronx Tale".
Despite the heavy plot, the film does induce smurks, if not laughs. Not a bad film, but a classic?.. fugettaboutit.
