It's a dark film starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Natalie Portman. Two brothers who are different from one another; one is the golden boy and the other is an outsider. After reported missing while in Afghanistan, Capt. Sam Cahill's (Maguire) family assumes that he is ...( read more)dead. Tommy (Gyllenhaal) tries to be there for his brother's wife, Grace (Portman) and daughters as they try to get on with their lives. Once Sam is back home, he doesn't seem quite himself. I think both Gyllenhaal and Maguire had strong performances. It was great to see Maguire in that role...he was crazy!! =)

Good drama. Exactly like the trailer describes, not too many surprises.

The few surprises for me were: 1) the humor. Jake Gyllenhaal is surprisingly funny in this film which makes it easy for him to win over the audience, and 2) I was surprised by how quickly things moved along ...( read more)when Tobey Maguire's character comes back into the picture. I would recommend this film if you're a Gyllenhaal fan. It wasn't great; it was okay.

Wow. Uh. I am just so confused. Well, not really confused. It's just, this movie was all over the place. That's all I can really say to explain it.
I thought it was going to be A LOT better than it actually was.
I'm a bit disappointed. Love Jake. All the actors were great.
I j...( read more)ust wish they could have changed a lot, I don't like the way this movie was directed at all. :(

Brothers is a powerful movie with great acting all the way through. It allows us to watch what a soldier is going through before he comes home, although a little exaggerated, and what he becomes once he does get home.

Two of the starring actors I've considered great for a while....( read more) Gyllenhaal has plenty of very good movies under his belt already, and I think he's the best under 30 actor we have. He doesn't always choose the best movies, but he does well in whatever he's in. This was a great selection for him. Natalie Portman has shown her acting chops time and again, and with this movie is again under appreciated and over criticized. I can't forget about Tobey Maguire either. He's done some magnificent movies, and he's SPIDERMAN. They all do such a fantastic jobs in this movie, and the little girls, and rest of the supporting cast were well chosen. This movie couldn't have three better leading actors.

Everything from script, to directing, to acting, I could go on and on, were fantastic. Brothers is really thorough in getting through the movie with intent and depth.

The transition from resource material to script was phenomenal. It's tricky, and has been done as perfectly in few other movies. In The Valley of Elah has a guy give a speech that is bone chilling, and there is a two minute clip in The Hurt Locker that puts the punch in the movie. Although a little "drama'ed up," Brothers had some very deliberately done scenes that gave it some punch.

Brothers is a fantastic movie that I think everyone but the big explosion, summer blockbuster loving zombies, should see. There is a movie called The Messenger out right now. If you want to see one "back home fallout after the war" movie, see Brothers.

Brothers was full of great p...( read more)erformances. But two really stick out for me. Tobey Maguire and Bailee Madison. Just wow. Tobey Maguire is definitely at his best in this movie. Probably the greatest performance for me, by him. He is two very different characters in this movie. First the happy husband and adoring father. But the events that he had to go through in order to get back to his family, has him come home as a paranoid tortured soul. In his eyes there's a look of just emptiness. Like the person he was is no longer there. But you see hints of his old self come back for a moment. But just a very short moment. A very raw performance by him. He was amazing. Bailee Madison, what an amazing little talent she is. She was so great at playing this role. She makes you feel her anger, fear, sadness, and even her happiness. She held her own in this gifted cast. She made her presence known and did it with great acting for such a young girl. Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Geare, and the rest of the cast was all just really great. A movie you don't walk away from thinking it's forgettable. It's one you will remember. At least it is for me.
