    I had a mixed reaction to the film. On the positive the acting by everyone is very good. Tobey Maguire's performance is worthy of an Oscar nomination. On the negative, the film feels like 2 different films in one. There is Tobey's story and there is Natalie and Jake's story and a...( read more)t the end the film tries to bring those 2 stories together, however, in my opinion it didn't come together well at the end. The pacing is also off at times.

    I give this movie a high review for two reasons:
    1. the plot is just great
    2. it tars jake gyllenhall , tobey maguire , natalie portman and that cutie bailee madison all giving all-star performances

    Thought the performances were very well, some dull moments, but you could feel the characters.     I walked away from this movie quite impressed with the performances from this cast, 3 very famous actors who we are used to seeing in younger roles, but are now proving that they can carry much more weight than most might have expected. The drama in this movie comes across pretty...( read more) handily. It might have teetered into melodrama territory here and there, but I think that director Jim Sheridan does a good job at keeping it believable, and letting the performances from his actors (including the two talented little girls in the film) shine through and do the story justice.

    If you were to compare this to another recent movie, it would be Revolutionary Road, which was a similarly well-acted, intensely dramatic story of a disfunctional family. This one doesn't quite reach that level, but it comes pretty darn close. I have a new respect for each of the three leading actors. I'm not quite sure why it's getting such mixed reviews, I really don't see too much wrong with this movie.

    Three powerful performances by three great actors. First of all I have to talk about Tobey Maguire. He really plays the part of a loving family man turned depressed mentally ill man so convincingly. I mean you see him with his family, playing with his kids, and being intimate wit...( read more)h his wife, helping and being so open to give his brother a second chance. And then he goes back to the war. And he's not happy nor sad about it. As he so poignantly puts it "It's work". And then when he's back in Afghanistan, his helicopter crashes and SPOILER gets held captive by terrorists. And after months of being on the brink of starvation, missing his family, watching his friend be tortured multiple times, the terrorists give him an ultimatum. Kill your friend/fellow soldier or you will die. And you can see him change from being brave and calm to fear, to frustration, and in the midst of it, he ends up beating his friend to death with a club. And it's a horrible act, that of course he never wanted to happen. But of course that act messes with his mind. And when he is returned to his family. He just shuts himself off with everybody. And he becomes convinced that his wife Grace and his brother Tommy have been sleeping together. Which they never did. At the end of the film he really blows up. He starts smashing all the cabinets, he screams and yells and pulls a gun on his brother and on himself. He ends up in a mental hospital. Where we see him slowly improving. He finally and tearfully admits to his wife that he killed his friend Jim. And we can all see that it will be hard but there is hope.

    Natalie Portman also does a really good job at playing the widow. She played her part so convincingly as well. And you also see her character become much warmer and closer to Tommy. And you see how confused she's feeling over the fact that she is starting to feel something for him, but she always remains faithful to her husband. She has this great range of emotions. And its wonderful.

    Jake Gyllenhaal is also great. He plays this troubled guy. Essentially he was sent to jail for robbing this woman. But when he gets out of jail, you witness the strained relationship with him and his father. His wishes he was everything Sam (Tobey ) is. And throughout the film you see Tommy grow up and mature. He helps out around the kids, he takes them skating, he plays with them, he doesn't go to bars and get drunk, and he re-builds the kitchen. And of course he feels some attraction to Grace (Natalie). And the two of them only kiss - once. They both realize it was a mistake. She's still in mourning and Jake who breaks down after that is obviously feeling that he is betraying his brother. He even redeems himself by confronting the woman he robbed and apologizing for what he did. And the woman confesses that she had nightmares for years, but ultimately can forgive him.

    I also have to give out a shout out to the young Bailee Madison. Boy does this girl have a future in this career. She is a little powerhouse. You can really see in her acting that she can tell her father is different when he comes home. She misses Tommy. She misses that normalcy that he was bringing to the family. And she gives such a strong performance espcially during the birthday party scene, where she yells a bunch of lies to her father about Tommy and Grace's relationship. And later Grace asks her "Why did you say those things" and she responds by saying that she doesn't like her dad anymore, she wishes Tommy was always around.

    The script is wonderfully written. The Direction is great. It's a really strong emotional film. It moved me to tears. All the performances was great. And I think this deserves to be recongnized at all the different award shows. Bravo!

    Pretty lazy filmmaking. Decent performances from Portman and Madison, but mediocre writing holds them back.     There's a shortage of originality in Hollywood lately, so it's probably unfair to condemn this film for being a remake of a Danish movie released five years ago. Director Jim Sheridan handles a flawed adaptation quite well for the most part, keeping the audience captivated and in...( read more)volved throughout. The dialogue and character dynamics are occasionally contrived, and the structure of the film feels too loose. Nevertheless, the themes translate well and there is enough emotional resonance to make it worthwhile. The performances are the highlight, with Natalie Portman dishing out the strongest acting. Maguire and Gyllenhaal are both skilled actors cast against expectations, and they are convincing throughout. At times Maguire's character is exaggerated as a result of the writing, but he has scenes of visceral power that raised my level of respect for him. As a melodrama founded on heightened feelings and situations, Brothers is very satisfying.
