Bruce Almighty

Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston, Morgan Freeman, Philip Baker Hall, Catherine Bell

Bruce Nolan is a local Eyewitness News TV reporter in Buffalo, New York, best known for doing human-interest stories--which makes everyone happy but him. Bruce would much rather be replacing the soon-...( read more  read more... )to-retire anchorman. Essentially, Bruce is disconnected with everything in his life and rarely misses an opportunity to complain about it. He has a loving girlfriend, Grace, who runs a day care center and adores Bruce in spite of his negativity. Bruce is handed a great opportunity when he's asked to do the 23rd anniversary of Niagra Falls' famed Maid of the Mist boat, which will air live during sweeps. But the mist hits the fan when it's announced on-air--just before Bruce goes live--that the co-anchor position, about to be vacated, is going to Bruce's superficial rival. In front of millions of viewers, Bruce has an on-camera meltdown, punctuated by a four-letter word not yet cleared for network television. On this worst day of Bruce's life, he's fired from the station, beaten up by a gang of toughs, and his car is vandalized. Furious, Bruce rails and rages against the Lord for his rotten luck--which is followed by a curious set of signs, one of which leads him to an old building called Omni Presents, Inc. There, Bruce meets a janitor who reveals himself to be who he really is--God! He's heard Bruce's complaints and now has an offer for the choleric newscaster--his job. By endowing Bruce with all his powers, God challenges him to take on the job and see if he can do any better!

"How would you handle the most awesome responsibility in the universe?"

A guy who complains about God too often is given almighty powers to teach him how difficult it is to run the world.

    REVIEW
This movie is certainly a lot better than the regular Jim...( read more) Carrey-movie. Well, it don't say so much, does it? Since the ordinary Jim Carrey is just a bunch of silly grimaces and silly jokes, this might be seen as heaven compared to such horrible movies as Ace Ventura and stuff. But the story in this movie is fairly ridiculous, right? But at the same time, its funny really funny. For the first time, Carrey makes a good job as actor. And so does Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman, but those two does practically a good job in any movie they're in.

But the movie still is far from perfect. Some scenes might be too long, and the funny parts in them are dragged on. And when they go on like that, they become ridiculous. But its still worth seeing. And after all, its a good movie and you laugh dozens of times during the movie.

A charming modern reinterpretation of Dickens's Christmas Carol. Jim Carrey, playing Jim Carrey, plays a self-centred TV news reporter who is endowed with the power of God. Bruce Nolan is a field reporter with a Buffalo news channel who feels put upon by God due to his second-rate life. When the opportunity for an anchor desk promotion he wants passes him by, Bruce goes to pieces on air and curses God. But then he receives a pager message from God a...( read more)sking him to come to an interview. There God tells Bruce he is going to go on a vacation and will turn his powers over to Bruce for one week. At first disbelieving, Bruce then begins to discover and exercise the powers. He uses them to humiliate his rival at the network and cause a series of miraculous occurrences that turn him into the top newscaster, while setting up a computer that automatically answers everybody's prayers. But when his activities also cause his girlfriend Grace to walk out, Bruce realizes that the one thing he cannot do is affect free and make her come back. Bruce Almighty is a funny film. There are moments so hilarious that they can hold up to the best setpieces in Carrey's previous comedies. Jim Carrey is both a talented comedian and versatile actor, as he has proven time and time again. He is as funny as expected in his role of Bruce. But he also invests his performance with a great deal of humanity and feeling, much more than the screenplay gives him. Morgan Freeman lends dignity and stature to his role as God. Steve Carell, cast as Carrey's rival, he manages to steal scenes from the human comic dynamo. As well, the film utterly peters out by getting sappy and melodramatic, as Bruce tries to clean up the many messes he's made as God while trying to woo back a fed-up Grace. As Bruce gets philosophical on us, it loses its comic steam; seeing Jim Carrey mess with the concept of determinism vs. free will is downright painful. The writers here have succeded in creating a great comedy for the first hour, but faltered near the end. The movie takes a deep turn that seems completely out of place and it really throws the entire package off.
