Plot: A flighty teenage girl learns that she is her generation's destined battler of vampires.
Eh... I've seen a couple of the TV episodes and this is so much worse than those I thought I was seeing a diffrent language
Buffy is a teenage girl who just haopens to fight vampires in her spare time. Luke Perry is in it, looking 32. Vampires appear. It's aso silly it's either horrible or brilliant at the same time. The cast is good for the flick, Swanson, Reubens, Hauer, Sutherland and even Perry. This actually grows on you, especially after Joss Wheden reinvented the idea in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.
Amusing piece of entertainment, definitely not meant to be taken seriously. best thing is Sarah Michelle Gellar is nowhere to be seen.
"Buffy" (Kristy Swanson) is the lead cheerleader of a high school who is dating the star basketball player who acts much like the typical valley girl who cares more about status, her appearance and the cheerleading squad. But her destiny has nothing to do with anything she cares most about.
She soon learns about her destiny when she meets "Merrick", a mysterious man who tells her she's "The Chosen One". "The Chosen One" is the one who will lead the fight against vampires. She is "The Vampire Slayer".
"Merrick" trains "Buffy" secretly so she can face the vampires, which are lead by "Lothos" (Rutger Haur) and his right-hand man "Amilyn" (Paul Reubens). To make things worse for "Buffy", her friends and classmates are becoming "Creatures of the Night".
Now, "Merrick", "Buffy" and "Pike" (Luke Perry), a real jerk who slowly warms up to "Buffy", must join forces to save the town and school from the world of the undead.
OK, although this is the movie the very popular television series is based upon, it is nothing like the TV show. The TV show is a serious horror/drama, while this movie is a campy B-movie.
There are some good performances in this film, but they are not perfect due to the script being only fair. The script has some plot holes, like how does "Merrick" know "Buffy" is "The Chosen One"? It's never explained.
Like I said before, the performances are not great. The main cast are stuck in a fair script. Sutherland, Swanson and Reubens have some of the strongest performances. Hauer is underused for being the lead vampire. For the lead vampire, "Lorthos" isn't seen much as he has "Amilyn" head any attacks outside the place he resides, which I think wasn't mentioned in the movie.
Another thing you will notice with this film is that there is no gore and very little blood. The scares are pretty mild. I also noticed that the vampire attacks on "Buffy" are "telegraphed" (meaning, you can see it coming) thanks to the stomach pains "Buffy" experiences when a bloodsucker is near. Maybe if they eliminated that plot device, and added some moody music that suddenly gets louder when something scary happens, the scares would have been much better.
It is also obvious that this movie has a fairly low budget thanks to the vampire makeup. The actors who play the bloodsuckers had powdered faces, fairly good looking fangs and horrible, but believable ears. But, for some reason, "Lorthos" looks more human than the rest of the vampires.
Since it's release to theaters, this film has become a cult classic. It's pretty good for watching on cable, and maybe for rental if your first couple of choices are unavailable for whatever reason.
Just remember one thing, if you have seen the TV show, but not the film on which it is based, there is a good chance you may be disappointed because you are expecting something drastically different.
This one gets a 4 starts for being a cult classic and for also contributing to the start of what was once..my favorite show on TV..I miss Buffy dearly and love to watch this movie for the memories...even if it WAS BAD..lol
Great, campy fun. Be forewarned: if you're looking for the beginning of the series in this movie, you'll see very little of it here. Just roll with the laughs, especially Paul Reubens!
Joss Whedon didn't want the film to turn out the way it did but it's still one of my fave movies of all time it kicked off a great TV series that dealt with many issues that weren't even been talked about at the time.
Okay... my friends and I watched this ad-nauseum in high school. It's Rutger Hauer and Pee-Wee Herman vs. Kristy Swanson and her period. That's entertainment!
I'll admit: I love this movie. The critics hated it, but who cares what they think? The show rocked hardcore, but you got to give the movie that started it all it's props.
Downright laughable, and a terrible movie to boot, yet it spawned a hugely successful series (which had it's own spinoff). Can only be watched once every many years.
a decent horror comedy, never really watched the series, but i'm sure this is a lot different from it.
i really wanna see this one, cuz my fav tv serial (buffy the vampire slayer [lead- Sarah Michelle Gellar]) is based on it.. i've heard its different from the tv series but hey, it IS my fav series
This is one of the only movies that stunk at the box office and still reworked itself into a hugely successful Tv series and spinnoff tv series . the HUGELY POPULAR AND successful Josh Whedon series that still has a huge following gave Sarah Michelle Gellars career a huge boost.
Still this campy movie version was oddly fun to watch.
Loved it I watch this all the time for a laugh. A vampire comedy about a flaky girl who is chosen to be a vampire slayer.
good movie at first swason got on my nerves but later on she really did well. Donald sutherlands acting was great..
i think it was bloody fangtastic lolalthough i prefer the series more because angel(david boranaz)is so hot he can bite me anytime
It is unbelievable that 12 amazing seasons of TV came from this campy piece of crap.
But still an enjoyable flick.
When I first watched this film, I thought "God, why would anyone want to fucking watch this?" Mainly because when in comparison to the television series, it is quite a flop, then again, I like this film because of the plot, which is the same as the TV show, but different actors. That is the whole difference is the actors. The plot outline of this film was the spin off for the TV series, and well after I seen this a few times, I like sitting down every so often and watching it. It is a bit entertaining, and I have actually grown to like Swanson as an actress. I prefer Sutherland in other roles, not this one, yet his role wasn't all that bad. Another thing, I had not noticed some of the earliest of roles this provided some of the good actors nowadays like Hillary Swank. I will admit that this film is not great by any means in regards to the acting, yet I get the feel of one of the self-indulged 80's films I always find entertaining, that everyone else hates, although the film is an early 90's film.
Clever and sexy. The young Kristy Swanson was full-figured and fiesty. Wish she looked half as hot now.
Watched it with Kimmi took us about 3 hours cause we kept pausing it!! really funny!! and luke perry was hott!!
series is much much much better
also david and james aren't in this so there are NO sexy guys in it.
The critics slammed this movie but in my eyes it was a instant hit. Kristy Swanson played a great Buffy and the soundtrack was cool too.

i agree great series, i love it! but not the best movie. joss whedon did write the script for the movie. But from what i heard Kuzui didnt understand Joss's vision and did a really bad job of directing.
Agree/disagree???
ok we got a moron on the loose, if you can read this that means you can scroll up to the part where it says "more like this" and right there in the movies listed along with lost boys and underworld are the movies shindlers list and e.t., does anybody else notice that. someone please tell me how that could be. That 39% of the people that did see that AGREE (WHAT?!?) with that. no, buffy the vampire slayer and shindlers list should and will never have anything to do with each other. this is making my brain hemmorage, i can feel it. i got to go.
i've never seen this movie, never really feel the need to, but i am IN LOVE with the show. I own all the seasons on DVD and I love Spike! Movie doesn't look that great though.
i strongly agree with pandorasboxx999 seriously great tv show sukyish movie tho xx
I'm ridiculously addicted to the television show (and its spinoff Angel)...but i cannot stand this movie.
Man SpookyRueban has some issues about Buffy lol
I can not agree with him on the tv show, i thought some of the acting was very good and the writing was good, i especially liked James Marsters ACTING, read:not that he was hot, in the last two seasons.
hot had nothing to do with it, it was about talent.
maybe he just tried early seasons before things ggot less cheeky... i dunno... i think the writing was descent and not overly formulamtic... and i criticize writing in eveyrthing as i am a writer myself, i always think i could have done it better, i didnt have too many of those moments with buffy.
Angel wasnt as good IMO.
I miss Buffy...
the movie i saw like the year it came out and tho' novel, i cant stand swanson and perry lol so my view was skewed.
Ok, why can't anyone realize that the movie, and the show, really are two completely different universes. It's like with comics- you get different creator interpretations. This one is a comedy rather than being darkly melodramatic.
This should be obvious and I still cannot find an explanation (besides the obvious conclusion) for all the TV show photos in this movie's photo collection.
