Plot: An unhinged war veteran holes up with a lonely woman in a spooky Oklahoma motel room. The line between reality and delusion is blurred as they discover a bug infestation.
Didn't like it. Maybe it's because I waited so long and was so excited to see BUG, but aside from the great premise, this was a big let down. The first half of the movie I was bored to tears watching the slow moves and conversations. And then after an hour or so it started and then ended so quickly. Acting wasn't so hot either, could have been so much better.
In 1973, William Friedkin's THE EXORCIST scared the bejesus out of young audiences, and now he's back into creepy pseudo-horror mode with this fascinating character study, an exercise in claustrophobic, paranoid breakdowns. Ashley Judd is the bartender at a small, Southern lesbian dive (though she herself is straight). Her best friend is a co-worker and regular seeking a lady with the right touch. Into her life comes the out of place ex-Military officer (Michael Shannon in a terrifying turn) who seems normal during a night of cocaine, booze, and ultimately cheap and tawdry sex. But as time goes by, the psyches of these two are on a collision course with insanity. The officer is talking about bugs and aliens and conspiracies, and it's not that long (perhaps too quick) before Judd believes him. This is a disturbingly effective thriller based on Tracy Letts' stage play, one not to be missed.
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh. wht the heck??? It was idk lol i mean comeo n, the government, an experiment! lol wht a classic!!! lol idk it was stupid, but somethign that you jus had to finish to wht happens. it was strange.
Looking at the previews for this movie you think you know what kind of movie it is, but it pulls the rug from beneath you and even though the ad marketing for this flick is decieving, it still is a fascinating look at the mind of mentally disturbed people.
While great performances on the side of the actors, the story is so aweful that you won't believe you wasted the time to see, so don't.
If this film had a simple, ambiguous story, it would've gotten three stars. Once you hear that William Friedkin's involved in a movie, though, you know that there's usually more to the story than meets the eye.
"Bug" is a strong psychological drama. And I say drama because eighty-five percent of it is jibber-jabbering. (The remaining fifteen percent is riveting and worth waiting for.) For those expecting bloodshed and mortal insects, you'll be disappointed as the most hardcore scene is that of the extracting of teeth. For those expecting a psychologically horrifying story, go ahead and watch this expecting disturbing results. The acting supports the suspense, but, even though Ashley Judd performs superbly during the first half, her feigned accent is noticeable in the climax.
Do YOU have a bug problem?
Interesting premise to look at paranoid delusions but I just didn't believe Judd's character would be taken in by the delusions of someone in a psychotic state, to the extent shown here.
Maybe it's because I waited so long and was so excited to see BUG, but aside from the great premise, this was a big let down. Acting wasn't so hot either, could have been so much better.
Good lord, this is one of the most screwed-up movies I have ever beheld. It's coherent yet inconclusive, unified yet disorienting. It's scary because it looks so real: the characters are three dimensional, the sets are ugly and nothing special and the fantastic horror is set against a real-world backdrop of violence; something that's already scary enough. These people go crazy so slowly that it's impossible to pinpoint the spot at which you stop believing them. If you stop at all. This is really remarkable, and really bloody unnerving. The violence in it is hard to watch, it's so gritty and painful-looking.
2008, Pulitzer Prize for Drama, recipient Tracy Letts wrote this as a play first, in 1996, and it dealt with issues of love, paranoia, and government conspiracy, after which, Director William Friedkin, later turned it into a movie in 2006. Ashley Judd should have been nominated for an Oscar for her performance in this movie as Agnes White, a woman who is borderline lesbian, hasn?t seen her missing son in 10 years, fearful of her ex-husband whom recently paroled from prison, and a recreational cocaine addict; who falls for a delusional, schizophrenic (played by Michael Shannon), who allegedly is running from the US Army doctors whom he believes, performed experiments on him for 4 years and placed infectious bugs in his blood, skin, and tooth cavities. I thought this movie was interesting and it captivated me long enough to watch it from beginning to end, without so much as even pausing for a restroom break. The captivation was not from this being a blockbuster status film, but instead ... I was captivated by how well these characters interacted, in a movie where 90% of it takes place in a small weekly rate room, in the Hotel Rustic. I recommend you see this movie just for the opportunity to see Ashley do her best acting since De-Lovely.
The concept is interesting and the acting is strong but, once the bugs enter the picture the movie becomes completely different (enough that I had to check several times to make sure the DVD wasn't skipping) at this point it becomes extremely convoluted. I think the best way to describe the second half of the film is if a Samuel Beckett play was spliced with Eraserhead.
oh my fucking god this movie was amazing and horrible at the same time the end was awesome but i never want to watch this ever again!!!
An entertaining portrayal of a psychopath by Shannon and a believable depiction of the creation of a psychopath through a variety of mean surprisingly by Judd.
This film was sooo powerful...and you think you know Ashley Judd she is amazing in this...I felt the desperation...the story is plain and simple.. a lonely women longs to be loved and protected that she morphs into a paraniod prison...I am getting the creepy crawlys writing this
The loser and lonely waitress Agnes lives in a cheap motel in Okalahoma grieving the disappearance of her beloved son Lloyd ten years ago. Her abusive ex-husband Jerry Goss has just left prison on probation and is insistently calling her. When her colleague and only friend, the lesbian RC, brings her drifter acquaintance Peter Evans to visit her, they have an affair and Peter stays with Agnes in her room. Peter finds bugs in their bed, and discloses to Agnes that he was a soldier in the Gulf War submitted to experiments by the army and presently he is infested with bugs. Agnes feels the same symptoms and the couple believes in Peter's conspiracy theory of the American government. This movie was horrible. There was nothing there to draw me in at all. The big climax of the movie happen in the last like 10 mintues. So, after all is said and done? our antagonist completes the psychotic paranoid transference to our protagonist they come to accept their fate, and actually relish the fact the "bugs" (that do not exist of course) are their offspring it is here they decide to pour gasoline over their bodies and burn themselves alive. Okay, it is here that I am actually happy because this film is over.
About 2 peoples decent into paranoia/madness. Nice acting by Ashley Judd. Kinda like the character in Inland Empire. Emotionally draining to watch near the end.
Great movie!
An intriguing story about two individuals who are deeply encompassed within the scope of the mind.
A must-see!
from william friedkin, who has come back with this, a very paranoid film, which is the point here, as a women and a guy, start to get very paranoid about bugs and goverment wrong doings, based on a stage play, which works well, and also on film
Just for the heck of it ... Friedkin, the creator of French Connection and Exorcist, even if this is a complete bullshit, I have to watch it :P
Besides its been a long time since I watched Ashley Judd ... hehehe
One of the best films I've seen in a long time, possibly Friedkin's best film yet, it's just so utterly intense and bizarre.
This movie is so boring the only good bit in that movie was when it finsihed it was a friggin waste of time.
The acting was mediocre whille the storyline was hard to melt into your brain. There was nothing special in this movie.
But i guess it inspires us to understand what the meaning of the word ''Paranoia'' is.
This movie didnt even try to be good. Dont bother watching it if you are a die hard fan of horror movies
I was surprised by how immersed I was by midway into the film. Its been a long time since I've been genuinely spooked by peformances alone.
High praise for the two leads (Shannon and Judd) I knew Mike Shannon to be an incredible character actor. But I was definitely shocked by Ashley Judds performance. Bravo to her. Especially in the last 25 minutes of the movie! Enjoy. Your head will spin!
They really had me going that they were infested with bugs! This was a very extreme view of paranoia

......I THINK I WILL WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW AND SEE WHETHER OR NOT IT IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN WATCHING...... ... ...... YEAH..... .. .
the mother bug sucks! this movie shows just how far a director can fall i guess. 30 years ago he made the excorcist and it was nominated for best picture, now he makes b-movies that can't even turn a profit. oh yeah this movie sucks too!

Maybe if more happened... maybe a little more explaining would've been nice too (what the bugs were supposed to do...)
