Byôsoku 5 senchimêtoru (5 Centimeters per Second) (A Chain of Short Stories about Their Distance) Reviews and Ratings

  • November 19, 2009
One of the most realistic and grounded animes I've ever seen (it's in my top 5 of all time greatest anime movies), it chronicles the life of a boy who an never get over his first love and how that makes him cold and distant toward everyone else. It was created by Makoto Shinkai, ...( read more)who is an absolute singular and amazing voice. His style his evident throughout, lots of long takes with the characters slightly out of frame, so we can marvel at the beauty of the backgrounds.

Slow-moving, drawn out and so beautiful in so many ways. It's a haunting movie about love and loss.

Beautifully animated and beautifully told, only wish the story wasnt that sad

The narration about the characters thoughts/feelings (I think) is what makes this story(s) so appealing. This is easily a chick flick; if you can call any Anime a chick flick.

Story 1 is a decent set-up for Story 2, but Story 3 is just a short montage of random shots with a lame...( read more) song played in the background; terrible resolution for the first two short stories.

It's a great animated movie, the art is amazing and the depth of the story itself is awe inspiring.

Touching story about regret, separation and lost love.
  • January 9, 2009
    Touching, sad, heartbreaking.
A truly great movie that makes you remember all the things about young love. From the joy of the first kiss to the pain of letting go, 5 cm/per second is a must see.

Couldn't expect an anni could go that far. Astonishingly touching.

Glorious art, specially the skies,it was amazing. But the story is too practical, it lacks the charm that the art had captivated.

One of the best animated films I have ever seen. On par with Hayao Miyazaki. Kinda reminded me of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time but much more heartbreaking. I still haven't recovered after watching this film and you'll see why after you watch it. Beautiful animation, landscapes...( read more), and characters. Nicely told story, poetic. Very realistic. Very memorable. Also, the theme song fits the movie perfectly (One More Time, One More Chance by Yamazaki Masayoshi). One of those films that stays in your mind for days.

Being of a fan of Makoto Shinkai's films, I'm sad I did not watch this sooner. This is three short stories each relating to a single relationship. As a whole the movie doesn't quite work as well as Voices of a Distant Star. When taken seperately it's much more enjoyable imo. The ...( read more)first segment is by far the best of the three. Everything gels perfectly and sets up a mood you would hope the rest of the stories would follow. Unfortunatetly that's not the case. The second segment is told thru a different person and didn't quite have the impact the first did. The third segement is a complete throw away. It started okay, but it very quickly turns into a music video and completely destroys all the attachment you had. Why he decided to end this way is beyond me.

It was alright. I was pretty bored throughout the whole thing, its really nothing to get excited about... though I know a lot of people love it...
  • September 14, 2008
it is simply awesome, but the story has it implied sad ending, i feel sad for tohno-kun
  • September 4, 2008
Though gorgeous this movie was too slow to allow all the good things about it to shine. The story and characters make it worth seeing but its hard to sit through.

Panalo. Tagos sa puso. This is everyone's story (one way or another).

Shinkai's 5 centimeters is one of the most beautiful animes you'll come across. It's a three chapter collection of stories, told through the povs of three different characters.

At the heart of this movie is the wistfulness of young love, and how the reality of life begins to tw...( read more)ist the innocence and naivete out of it, like water being wrung from a towel.

The simple elements of everyday life, the mundane, are brought to light in a stark and cold contrast to the sentiment of the story. It is often a strange and beautiful litany that plays out before your eyes, and often it is hard to watch the pain that is always so close to the character's hearts.

There is hope, there is loss, and yet...life goes on.

I am a huge fan of animation movies coming from Japan and besides the greatness that guys like Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon and Katsuhiro Otomo, I hadn't found a director that could really grab me by the neck and commanded me to watch. This changed when I saw a series of shorts b...( read more)y director Makoto Shinkai. His shorts were beautiful and gripping and I expected nothing less when I saw this movie. This is a movie about love lost and it definitely does its job. I found myself hoping to see the two main characters reunite after all that time which is a sign of a great story. This movie had some hiccups, but it was hard to not love it. I will be keeping an eye out for Shinkai's work from now on.

My love affair with Makoto Shinkai continues with this film, which has a more realistic grounding but slightly (only just) more cynical tone. I've always admired the work of anime director Hayao Miyazaki, and figured thats all anime had to offer me. However, Shinkai's films hav...( read more)e more emotional depth and stories that resonate greater. I can't believe I didn't find out about him sooner, and I can't wait to find his other work.

Not that I've seen a lot, but this has got to be one of the "prettiest" animes ever made. It's like, you know it's anime, but it looks so darn real.

I'm not the biggest fan of chapter by chapter movies, but this one worked well with that format, making the pacing better than wh...( read more)at I would imagine if they made it into a seamless piece.

I don't know if it's just me, but I found the first chapter incredibly slow. I've had similar pacing experience with other japanese movies, and I understand why they like doing it, but sometimes I really have to speed it up or I can't bear it. But by the time he actually reached the station, I loved it. :)

I liked the fact that they opted to take a different view/narration in the second chapter. That was actually my favorite one.

The third chapter was a short one, both of them grown up, and sadly awakened from dreams. It was a sad yet realistic ending that you actually wanted to lengthen the movie expecting it to have a happy ending.

5 centimeters per second?! That must take tremendous training.

    I am so renting this.

From the same people who made "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" this movie turned out alright. The animation was really beautiful, and the pacing went more smoothly in comparison to "The Place Promised in Our Early Days." The story is sad, but I can't say I was crying over ...( read more)what happened. It is sad, but realistic, which is what makes it worth watching. Not a long movie at all. Watch it if you can.

The animation was breathtaking. The story may feel a little slow to some, but it is accompanied by a very artistic narration which, coupled with the animation, makes it beautiful.

A beautifully done movie which no doubt everyone from all walks of life will be able to relate to. Makoto Shinkai has beautifully integrated our everyday lives into three short stories, woven to tell the tale of love and departure

Have you ever experienced a high school love that didn't quite make it? This movie makes for quite the juvenile tragedy. It features three short films: Oukashou, Cosmonaut and Byousoku go senchime-toru.

I've never really been into romance dramas but the amount of animation detai...( read more)ls put into this movie is really something. Director Makoto Shinkai placed a überhigh standard for animation in this movie. This one is really something for your eyes to feast on. Not to mention the amount of details that went into each character's emotions. Every strand of hair (every teardrop at that) was carefully swayed to produce that minute effect on the viewers.
