Liza Minnelli at her greatest in a performance that she hasn't been able to match since. The fantastic musical numbers provide some much needed light relief to the chilling subject matter at hand.

well made and fairly intriguing, but empty at the same time making this a film that for me falls far below its reputation.

Everything came together so perfectly in this movie, the cast, screenplay, direction, music, art direction and cinematography. It's a brilliant film, and one of the best musicals ever made. The choreography is incredible, the production is outstanding, the costumes are so creativ...( read more)e. It's a one of a kind film, Bob Fosse's vision amazes me.

I hadn't seen this movie since I was 9 and though I remember liking it a lot at that time (along with it having many more songs), and I did unsterand the major themes playing, I think it is significantly more meaningful to me now. My image of Liza Minnelli was that of someone who...( read more) marries quite often and falls down a lot, hilariously, in "Arrested Development"; nothing could have prepared me to rediscover her graciousness, her voice and how she seems to flow through the screen effortlessly emboding all that is Sally Bowles (and Lucille Bluth was righ, a piano could stand on those legs). The film would not work for me it were not for Liza and also the oh-so-freaking-great Joel Gray.

So I decided to rewatch this film, and came to the conclusion this is probably the most classic musical of the 70's, perfectly portraying 30's Berlin during a post war crisis and when NAZI party began to arouse. With a premise that life is a cabaret, in which people look for some...( read more) getaways to stop worrying for just a little time when all around is chaotic.
A landmark (in my opinion) in open-minded cinema, with some amazing shots by Bob Fosse and amazing performance by Liza Minnelli as one of the most intriguing female characters in cinema. Oh and the main theme has to be one of the most popular songs in film history!

Musical numbers were the highlights although I didn't really care about them that much either. It was overall a bit disappointing, I think I was just expecting something more grand, idk.
  • August 29, 2009
Not as good as the stage version.

Sorry, but this just didn't work for me.

Somewhat overrated musical drama set in decadent Berlin before the rise of the Nazis under Adolf Hitler. Liza Minnelli is a standout as Miss Sally Bowles, a flamboyant American singer at the Kit Kat Klub. Flashy musical numbers are the highlight of the film, and personify the e...( read more)vents happening in the real world. In particular, Joel Grey's duet with Minnelli, "Money, Money" is a showstopper. Has the dubious distinction of having won the most Academy Awards (8) without actually winning Best Picture.

At the time of the Nazi this movie shows a history of the characters inside and outside of the cabaret. Bob Fosse (as director and actor) and Liza Minelli made this film one of the best music I ever saw. All the scenes of them singing and dancing are wonderful.
  • June 7, 2009
    mad,sinister and brilliant cinematography
  • June 2, 2009
Not that impressive. Some of the songs were cute, but Michael York is essentially just a total creeper and Liza Minnelli gives off a real lesbian vibe. It was weird, kind of crose, and unimpressive.
  • May 23, 2009
Good music, Liza can sing, looks cute, and the lengths some go to for fame....
  • April 3, 2009
if the bloody cabaret act had been cut down a bit and there was more back story it would have been better

Would like to see Sam Mendes´ version. A good scenario, but many different ways to use it, and although this version is not bad, I think other focus will be even more interesting.

Liza Minnelli is a shining here. But I always remember that scene with Nazi youth singing 'Tomorrow belong to me' - I get shivers every time!
  • March 11, 2009
Liza Minelli is unforgettable in the role of Sally Bowles in this enjoyable piece, with great dances and musical numbers by helmer Bob Fosse, who manages to balance them with the story and background of the Nazi party's rise in 1931 Berlin. A great mix of style and sleaze, no won...( read more)der it won eight Oscars.

LOVE Joel Grey's character! Too bad the rest of the film wasn't as good as the actual cabaret numbers.
  • February 10, 2009
This is a great musical- very dark. Love the film even if it is very sad. Some of the songs are fantastic though.

A very strange and unusual film, but a great one. The story follows Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), an American singer/dancer who is presently living in Germany in 1931. A young British man (Michael York) is new in town, and rents a room in a building where Sally is living. Throug...( read more)htout the film we see the ups and downs of life, love, freedom, desires, and everything in between. Minnelli gives a dazziling preformance, and her musical numbers are top notch. The same goes for Joel Grey, who won a well-deserved Oscar for his preformance as the creepy, mysterious, and marionette-like Master of Ceremonies. The film is topped off with the exceptional direction by Bob Fosse who, like Minnelli and Grey, won a deserved Oscar for his fine work. Not a film for everybody, but you won't know until you have seen it with your own eyes.

Masterful reworking of Christopher Isherwood's "Berlin Diaries" by way of Broadway. Delightful decadence interwoven with wicked commentary on the twilight of German civilization.
