"I wanted you to be present..."

A married couple is terrorized by a series of videotapes planted on its front porch that may be the direct result from an event from years ago.

    REVIEW

Gripping y...( read more)et subtle thriller that brings back the eerie joy in voyeurism through film. Adding his own paranoid vision to the classic detached cinematography, Michael Haneke spins a misunderstood web of class struggle, emotional repression, and stalker fear in the guise of this slow but effective whodunit. Though not the masterpiece some may claim this bold film to be, Cache effectively puts you into the increasingly tense atmosphere dealing with this French couple's mysterious "watcher". Many viewers might be turned off by the movie's indecision to make up it's entire mind for us, although the writer incorporates enough social and psychological insight to make the main plot take a back seat to the underlying themes that represent what is truly "hidden".

Formally quite interesting plus good performances. I don't really get the hype about the last shot. I can't shake off the feeling that Haneke is taking some huge narrative shortcuts using the genre trappings, ie the surveillance shots. It's like the characters are manipulated thr...( read more)oughout the film by the director. Normally I wouldn't mind this except here Haneke is basically making himself an invisible character and taunting his characters safely outside the narrative just to get his point across and for formal reasons (the 2nd to last shot says it all about who's actually sending the videos). I think this cheapens the film's impact.

Cache is full of amazing yet subtle moments and it fully requires audience participation.

Tense and unsettling tale of the past catching up with you, with a nicely ambiguous ending. Little happens or is resolved which can be off putting. Certainly an enigma if not terrifically enjoyable.

"The first great film of the 21st Century" - well, that's what it says on the cover of the dvd. I think this is the first sub-titled film for me, that seems to lose something in translation. According to the synopsis ("This utterly compelling psychological thriller..."), I feel...( read more) this didn't come across at all, perhaps that was something you sensed in certains tones of the voices etc as opposed to any visual content.

This film was a disappointment to me, as I really was expecting good things, however it seemed like a bit of an anti-climax and had a very abrupt ending which I didn't understand at all.

Decided that this deserved to be a 5 stars. Not going to review it again as I saw it a while ago. All I am going to say is that this is a masterpiece and if you have the patiance, you will enjoy this deep and meaningful film.

I was waiting for last awesome twist to happen but in never came. If I've invested time in a film like this one that's not okey.

I wanted the (or at least more of them) answered!

And why didn't they just put up a camera and film the guy filming.

I can't see why some people say it takes a lot of time unfolding, I see it as a thriller from the very first minute.
It is great, I kept hanging on the edge of my seat the whole movie always expecting what could happen on the next scene. It has so many themes to discuss like Fre...( read more)nch-Algerian relationships, family, and I've read the story trespasses the "fourth wall" and the moviemaker becomes a character itself. One of the best thrillers of this decade for sure.

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

Haneke's patient, tip-toed assault turns Caché from a little movie about spooked haute-bourgeois media personalities into a sneaky and effective exposé on the artifice of film. full review

February 9, 2006
Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Haneke's characters are never easy to like, yet it's impossible not to empathize with their anxiety. It's his mastery of the craft, both visual and sonic, that pulls viewers along in its grip. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

When Caché played at Cannes, some critics deplored its lack of a resolution. I think it works precisely because it leaves us hanging. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

By the final riveting and static images, fear and guilt have become almost palpable. You won't be able to look away. full review

Armond White, The New York Press

Haneke's aspiration to artistry is hideously high-toned. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

The film is almost claustrophobically personal and yet fascinatingly broad in scope, an ambitious undertaking by director Michael Haneke. full review

A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Tempting as it is to dismiss Cache as a liberal guilt trip in the guise of a thriller, it is at the same time hard to deny its creepy, insinuating power.

December 20, 2005
Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

To some degree, Hidden is a cat-and-mouse thriller, the only problem being that mouse and cat insist on swapping roles. full review

Such a waste of time, talent, work, money, etc. The director comes out and said that this story can be told in any country, well of course, 5 minutes in any talk show like Oprah will be enough. the rest as he said can be told in any survaillance camera. minute after minute figuring out how is it that the actors are having coffee, or just making a call. What's the point in praising this kind of film just for convincing good actors to work in it? The argument is good, but the story is good, but is pointless by expressing it with such dull perspective and lack of directing skills.

This is the worst movie I have ever seen. A thirty minute movie was stretched to two hours. It was absolutely boring and very annoying because of the boredom. There was no ending to the story. Just a complete waste of you time. No way on earth I could recommend this movie to anyone.

Incredibly over-rated. This is one of the most pretentious, art-house wannabe film's I've ever had the displeasure of watching. Yes yes we're all aware of the idea of the gaze, the ambiguity, the irresolution, the sense of discomfort in the viewer, bla bla bla. It's as if the director thought, "hmm i want people to be really confused and then really impressed because they were made to feel so dumb. I want people to say at the end,'Wow, I didn't get it. But that's why it's brilliant, cos it's art, you're not meant to get it'". PLEASE! Cut the crap.

Definitely one of the best films of last year. This isn't your average thriller, this is a film that needs the audience to pay attention extremely closely to figure out the storyline and twists. Brilliantly directed by Michael Haneke, and excellently acted by Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil, Cache is a masterpiece, and is a must see.
    Definitely worth watching.
