Plot:
Razor sharp Romanian comedy about a group of American soldiers who get stuck at train station in Romania while delivering NATO supplies during the Kosovo conflict in 1999, and must deal with the increasingly ridiculous ways the rural tries to welcome them and show off their tiny town. Director Cristian Nemescu masterfully balances humor, drama, and romance, with the wonderfully deadpan tone we have come to expect from Romanian filmmaking. A very good film indeed.
Interesting film, for the most part, but suffers from a poor final act. The character of most interest in the film is the station master, but his story is abruptly aborted for no apparent reason (I think the filmmakers overestimated the appeal of the leading lady - I wasn't terribly sympathetic). I sense Romanians will enjoy the inside cultural jokes far more than foreigners, who will likely miss the point entirely. All in all a bit of a shame, really, since the film had some promise.
The definitely true masterpierce of the "Romanian Nouvelle Vague". A fabulous tragi-comedy about absurdity of History and War. Go and see it now !
A wise combination of drama and humour, justice and injustice (seen from every angle) along with perfect selection of characters, depicting every aspect of life. The attempt of the chief of the railway station to prevent the NATO train to pass his village because of missing documents, the opposition of the local population against the chief of the railway for other reasons, the arrogance and final betrayal of the american soldiers towards the people who accepted and welcome them as friends. A brilliant movie from a director who left this world too young...
Cristian Nemescu R.I.P.
the only endless movie i've heard of....and not because of its lenght....(that's a sad story)...half romanian half american, the movie is an interesting mix of rough american military disasters and typical romanian un-asked for humour
