There's a reason why there was a slew of high school comedies touching on the; nerd meets popular girl-nerd falls in love with popular girl-popular girl rejects nerd-popular girl gets to know nerd and falls in love, type movies. There's only so many. For one we can all relate to ...( read more)either side if we've ever been in high school but even more so, if we've ever dreamed of having it all, or simply just being loved. The story, though, is not familiar context in it's entirety, but a fantasy composed into real life. Extending on the idea of getting the girl and keeping the girl. The now hunky and dreamy Patric Dempsey plays the shy and awkward nerd, Ronald Miller, whose name suits the character as well as his appearance during that time. The all so familiar scenario of an outcast nobody who dreams of being popular, and dating the most beautiful girl in school, is the preset for this romantic teen flick, made therefore set in the 80's. I must say that the desperate notion of paying a girl a thousand dollars to stage a relationship, and even more, incessantly achieving overnight popularity, steals any chance for romance, or any type of sympathy vote. Yet, it it fun to watch him marvel in his new found surroundings. While he is getting a taste for what life could be like, he tend to abuse his privileges and forgets his first motives, Like a person who has never had money and suddenly wins the lottery, he is anything but humble or appreciative, and his overly confident attitude, at first, is well noticed and rewarded within his new social network. That soon blows out of proportion when he loses himself in his own self absorption and the pretentious character he created. Now he must recover the damage by ultimately showing a grand gesture of self sacrifice and honesty, in order to not be forever hated by the whole school, if not, the girl, who's heart was broken, in a weird twist of fate. He used her then spit her out, in the end, does he really deserve her love? This movie is more of a warning than a moralistic message, in a 'be careful what you wish for' sort of way. An interesting plot. Although the character attachment is compromised for the good portion of the movie. Still, another childhood favorite and a classic for that time and genre. There have been a few movies since, with the all to similar plot, trying to capture the heart and soul of this film. Yet most are intellectually insulting, hit and misses.

Love this movie, so sweet and innocent. A great representation of how when you're in high school what everyone thinks of you seems like the most important thing in the world at the time. Patrick Dempsey is super cute and lovable in this film, way better than the Dr. McDreamy he i...( read more)s today. Love it!!!!
