Essentially "The English Patient" set on a Greek Island. It has all the same ingredients, but isn't quite such a powerful movie and the inconsistent accents hardly helped. Lots of Mediterranean charm and a worthy history lesson too.

Miscast, overlong, unconvincing and above all boring. Painful!

Cage's performance is awfully annoying. The movie is boring and painful to watch thanks to Cage's stupid, disgusting accent. And Penelope should stick to her own language as her best performances are in spanish and her worst works are always in english.

I think you can compare this type of film to "The English Patient", although personally I think it's slightly better. The setting alone creates a less bleak tone. A sweeping tale of romance with an amazing cast. I'm not usually one for a romantic film, but I quite enjoyed Capt...( read more)ain Corelli's Mandolin.

David Edelstein, Slate

It's from a wry, teeming novel, but director John Madden (or someone) has left out a lot of connecting material, so Cruz seems to go for Cage only because it says so in the script. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Captain Corelli's Mandolin gets things about half right. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

What we get is kind of a condensed version of some of the sights and sounds of the novel, without the heart, the spirit and the juicy detail. full review

Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

In a season dominated by effects-driven blockbusters, this old-style, lyrical love story should find its audience and then some. full review
