A favorite for sure! This movie will play tug-of-war with your heart strings. Nicolas Cage did very well, Penelope Cruz was stunning (as always), Christian Bale was great-- just a wonderful movie.
Definitely one to watch with your wife/husband, or your boyfriend/girlfriend. The film was brilliant.
It's hard to know where to begin with this review. I know that films of novels should be regarded completely seperately but Captain Corelli's Mandolin was such a wonderful, not to mention immensely popular, book that any film adaptation is doomed to suffer endless comparison. I personally could not understand the casting - Nicolas Cage as Corelli, the Italian soldier, was abyssmal. Apart from his startling turn in Leaving Las Vegas, I'm not sure I've ever seen a him do a half decent job in any film. Here, he speaks with such a weird accent (it's basically his normal accent with a load of stretched out vowels, just so you know he's iiiiitaaliiiaaaan) and acts as though he's on auto-pilot. Penelope Cruz isn't much better either (she's Spanish!! It's no where near Greece!!). I will admit the photography is stunning but that doesn't make a good film. The role of Carlo is completely ignored - he has about two speaking lines and so his act of sacrifice, so devasting in the novel, has no meaning. The only person to come away with any dignity is David Morrissey who's portrayal of Weber is so understated and moving that it belongs in an entirely different film. I hope one day somebody refilms the book and gives it the justice that it really deserves.
wow i have just seen this movie 4 the 1st time n think that this is a good movie 2 watch..this has got a good cast of actors/actressess throughout this movie...i think that nicholas cage n christian bale (who now plays batman in batman begins n the dark knight) plays a good part throughout this movie,,the location/scenery throughout this movie is really good/nice 2 see throughout this movie..i think that penelpoe cruz was good throughout this movie...
Not bad but it's a pity that the actors speak English in Greece and especially P.Cruz had a bad English accent who is from Spain I think and Nicolas Cage played an Italian, very funny all that. They had better made the movie with some Greek actors, I think.
sappy love story. not my favorite type of movie; I try to stay away from these kinds, actually, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I didn't like the plot...it seemed realistic, but not at the same time. I was expecting something that centered on the mandolin, not on the relationships.
This film made me roll me eyes so many times!!!! It's not all bad, for example the photography is stunning, but it's all too cliched with a very predictable ending. The acting was simply awful, Nicholas Cage was mistcast, Penelope Cruz was more dreadful than ever, not even Christian Bale couldn't do a better job, only John Hurt stood up a little. I was annoyed by the fact that the differences between the languages was done only through a bad accent.
<< When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body. No... don't blush. I am telling you some truths. For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away. Doesn't sound very exciting, does it? But it is! >>
The movie is set during World War II. Pelagia, played by Penelope Cruz, lives with her father Dr. Iannis, played by John Hurt, on the Greek island of Cephallonia. Pelagia is engaged to marry a local fisherman named Mandras, played by Christian Bale.
While Mandras is fighting in Albania, Italian soldiers occupy the Greek island. Captain Antonio Corelli, played by Nicholas Cage, stays with Pelagia and her father. With Mandras away, Pelagia and Captain Corelli start to find feelings for each other. Pelagia realizes that she never loved Mandras.
I couldn't help but find the unexpected love (well, it was unexpected to them) between Pelagia and Captain Corelli romantic. Especially when he comes back to the island seven years later.
Even though I enjoyed the love between the two leads, I found myself reaching out towards Mandras. He did what he thought he should do, fight for his country, and while away loses his love to the enemy. And then to try to win Pelagia's love, he saves Captain Corelli's life.
I do not think the best acting in the movie came from Cage or Cruz. I think it came from the supporting cast of Hurt and Bale. Hurt is the father who kind of sits back and watches his daughter get confused in love. He helps her come to a decision with a very honest speech about love ("Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away"). And then Bale. Bale is the sweet, not often serious, not most educated, boy next door. He truly loved Pelagia and got his heart broken. And I think you could really see that.
All in all, a movie that does have its touching and romantic moments.
Beautiful film, beautiful location. Utterly succinct and precise instructions from Nicholas Cage in the square. First watched this film in an open air theatre in the York gardens, magical evening
I don`t know where to begin, I ll try. Comparing to the Book of Louis de Berniere, the the Movie is lacking with some details, but this is not new when it comes to the Movies which are based upon Books. I remember my Sis Recommeded this Movie to me ages ago. I totally forgot it, but luckily we caught it on TV. I must admit I watch Nicolas Cage Movies in German only. Don`t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with Cage`s voice, it is just the Martin Kessler voice is so perfect for Nicolas Cage.
Okay back to Movie. If had never read the Book, I would have said "Everything about the movie was perfect." For those who are not interested to read the Book and want to see Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, Penelope Cruz, in a moving Drama, Romance and "War Movie." This is perfect. It moved me a lot, though I was moved by the Book a lot more. Surprising that I enjoyed this Movie very much. The beginning is rather a bit slow, sweet and very funny. Nicolas Cage trying in a funny way to capture Pelagia`s attention. Never saw him playing Mandolin before. Kind of Sweet. And the Tricks he used. Like when Pelagia`s Father asked him to play Mandolin, Corelli played so miserable. Just to get rid off the old man and when the old man left and Pelagia was just about to stand up and go, Corelli began to play such a lovely Melody. Every Character were convincing in this Movie.
There is this Scene where the Germans Execute Corelli and his Men. A Friend of Corelli who had promised Pelagia (P.Cruz) before that he will take care of Corelli because he knew how she felt about him. And when the moment where the Germans began shooting, he just threw himself on Corelli which saved Corellis life. I could n`t help my tears back. I mostly gasped half of the Movie. I could go on and on which, what, and where. But I might spoil it for many of you. As I can see many of my Friends haven`t seen it yet. Believe me it is worth watching.
Quoted I felt sorry for many of the characters who were very like able So yes, it was a great film, nicely atmospheric and sweet. Historically intriguing also.
A very moving film, It inevitavly had the odd cliece and small inconsistancy like most hollywood films, but everything else makes you look past them, I enojyed it very much; the acting, the music score, the imagery, the warfare, the characters and the plot amongst other things.
I found it very refreshing not to hear a single english or american accent throughout the entire movie! <3
It's a film which has kinda been tarnished by it's advertisment, it's not a stupid romance film, it's more interesting than that. What I most liked it for was how moving it was, I welled up when people cried, I gasped when people were killed, I felt sorry for many of the characters who were very likeable
So yes, it was a great film, nicley atmopsheric and sweet. Historically intriguing also.
So meaningless and so shallow!!This film has nothing new to "say"!As i was watching this movie ,somewhere in the middle,i got absolute tired of the story and confused by the genre of this motion picture...Is it comedy or tragedy , romance or parody? As for Nicolas Cage...what can i tell? The man CANNOT act!!!If there is an anti-Nicolas Cage fun club somewhere, count me in!Greek island ,Cephallonia, and the eyes of Penelope Cruz are the only things that are worth while listening to Captain Corelli's -out of tune- mandolin!!!
awww i love this film, just seen it now but i've seen it tones before. its good because its not all about the two main characters. its got a lovely funny sweet and truthful story which is upsetting aswell. one to definately watch. lovely.
This is my least favorits movie in the entire world. So pointless, and stupid, and dumb and rettarted from beginning to end. I hate myself for watching the entire thing!!!!
A movi that stuck with me for a while which most people don't like. I enjoyed it, found it entertaining and touching. Well done romance although not like the book - i am told
Cage's performance is awfully annoying. The movie is boring and painful to watch thanks to Cage's stupid, disgusting accent. And Penelope should stick to her own language as her best performances are in spanish and her worst works are always in english.
This film is visually beautiful. The way it was shot is gorgeous! The thing is that it is a boring film... even though the cas ensemble is good there the acting was good also the plot was like BLAH!! It bored me, I wasn't drawn into the story even once which leaves a lot desire... so aside from the beautiful settings the film is nothing great.
I guess this was supposed to be a sweeping, romantic epic film. Nope. Just incredibly boring and sappy. Extra 1/2 star for Nicolas Cage and his phony Italian accent - possibly the worst attempt at an accent I've seen since Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. Unintentional humour is never a good thing for a movie.
