A Hammer Horror Swashbuckling Vampire film.

How you not love the Crash Zooms.

This is one of the last great movies Hammer made, and it was a telling display of how out-of-touch the studio was at the time that they sat on it for a couple of years before releasing it and went back to producing the increasingly dire Dracula series. This is a fabulously entert...( read more)aining, audacious and offbeat movie which introduces elements of the western and swashbuckler genres to the vampire yarn.

"What he doesn't know about vampirism wouldn't fill a flea's codpiece"

Young women from the village are being mysteriously drained of their blood and, bewildered as to the source of the problem, the local physician requests the help of an old friend, the "herb" smoking, swashb...( read more)uckling ex-military man Captain Kronos (Horst Janson). Freelancing has a vampire hunter and aided by his occult studying compatriot (John Cater), Kronos sets about tracking down the mysterious attacker and saves a beautiful gypsy girl from the stocks (Caroline Munro) along the way.

In an attempt to revive flagging sales, Hammer swept away the dark, cobweb laden castles of old and injected the vampire genre with sword fights, bar brawls and self parody. Whilst the result is far from disastrous, it unfortunately did not prevent the inevitable demise for the onetime flagship of British cinema. Somewhat feather light in the plot department, Kronos nevertheless moves along at a brisk pace and throws up some great lines along the way. Performances are nothing special but Janson brings certainly brings an element of fun to his character. The stunning Caroline Munro (The Abominable Dr Phibes) plays her part well and is more than just a pretty face to look at (although you cannot help but look).

Whilst lacking the gravitas of the big hits from Hammer stalwarts Cushing and Lee, Kronos is an entertaining film nonetheless even if it is not one of the studios strongest. Recommended.

So Captain Kronos is a totally shitty vampire hunter. Movie spends 80 minutes confusingly building up to a face-off between Kronos and a character you have not seen even once before.

Great twist at the end! Typical cheesy death sceens as peer the movie era but excellent story plot for its time

A nice switch in the vampire lore as they suck the youth out of you instead of just sucking your blood. Herb smokin swashbucklin Kronos is a cool Hammer entry where he shows you vampire hunter doesn't always have standard means (and he shows you the old toad in the hole trick)

Oldie but Goodie - takes me back to saturday mornings in my misspent youth

Captain Kronos is above average hammer fare that borrows more than once from the styling of the darker Italian westerns and more gothic giallo. Not for everyone but should appeal to hammer fans especially.
