The story of the deranged french butcher began with this short film that displays every single trademark of the pretentious filmmaker Gaspar Noe, the prominent use of black and red, the disturbing presence of Philippe Nahon, titlecards, explicit carnage, sexuality and gutter lan...( read more)guage. definitely not for the squeamish.

Oh how I love fresh meat, prickly made like a vesper nun.. Noe practically slaughters his protagonist, chopping off his sentimentality or should we point out his...slothfulness?

Decent short-film and prequel to the amazing full-length feature "Seul contre tous". It lacks many of the qualities present in the sequel, but this is still entertaining.

There's a large number of people who think they know what cinema should be. Artists are either there to make one think or to entertain. As long as your thinking about the correct things. Noe has always spit in the face of convention, making bleak movies that could be argued ha...( read more)ve no redeemable values. Sure they have serious issues in them, incest, rape, murder, vengeance, etc, but they don't give clear answers or even opinions. Noe seems to be just fascinated by the dark side of mankind and beyond (time destroys everything after all). Which is a-okay with me, but for those easily offended or don't believe in expressing nihilism for nihilism's sake should stay far away from his output.
Carne is the short film that I Stand Alone is based on. It makes a great introduction for that film and also works as a great introduction to an incredible new talent in cinema. Nahon is excellent as usual and the story is downbeat while Noe's filmmaking still make it very watchable.

Noé's first major film was the 40-minute Carne (1991), produced through his partnership with filmmaker Lucile Hadzihalilovic (La Bouche de Jean-Pierre [1995], L'Ecole [2003]), Les Cinémas de la zone, in 1991. The film, a tale of a horse butcher who takes revenge on a man he mista...( read more)kenly believes to have raped his autistic daughter, marks not only the first time Noé incorporated on-screen textual warnings, epigrams, and notes into the filmic narrative, but also the first collaboration with actor Philippe Nahon who has appeared in all of Noé's subsequent features. Carne also includes a number of 'shock' elements such as gunshot sound effects, loud martial chords on the soundtrack, and rapid editing that would become major characteristics of his style in the later Seul contre tous (1998). Between the shocks and warnings in the film, however, there are veins of delicious dark humour to be found: a montage showing the butcher chopping meat as intertitles mark the passage of year after year, and the mute daughter blankly watching Herschel Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast (1963) on television.

I like this Noe short more than the sequel as its images are violent (I Stand Alone just has "shocking" monologue) and the disturbing factor achieved is attempted through not just one level. I Stand Alone has the French guy (Whom I admire way more than Travis Bickle) walking arou...( read more)nd and then Noe says, "I'm going to shock you" but then nothing really happens. Here with Carne things basically come out of nowhere and punch you in the crotch, gut and face: animal slayings, deliverance, incest, etc. Noe caught on to this which is why Irreversible came out to be such a disturbing success - it attacks viewers on literally more than three levels. Anyway, watch this if you're curious as to how Philippe Nahon's character was established. It includes the exact same stylization as in I Stand Alone but it's a subtle character study as opposed to an up-close talky one.

Historia experimental sobre un carnicero asesino. Gran dirección. Mediometraje en B & N que te mantiene al filo del asiento.

iTS THE START of a wonderfull career.
Its not good enough but it shows his talent.
Later on he proved it :)

This is my second Gaspar Noe venture, and it makes me more interested in his other works. This short film is very uniquely made, with great editing, and a surreal atmosphere. Though it is violent and graphic, the film in general is very well-made.

Short story about a butcher and his mentaly handicaped daughter.
Contains very explicit photos, it's nothing for the faint of heart or animal friends.

Some of the most exceedingly violent things I've had the pleasure to witness.
