Don't ask me why I liked this movie so much. I couldn't answer that question. I guess I'm a sucker for movies about performance art/magnet schools. It let's me dream and shows me what I missed out on. So, point in case, a decent film with a reasonable storyline cocerning overly a...( read more)mbitious youth, most of which are pampered and probably pushed just a little too hard by their parents. I could've done without the romantic aspect, but a person can say that it WAS the plot of the movie. Fine, the audience wants love and conflict, but dance should shine on it's own without the soap opera. The actors in this film are very talented. I have watched this a few times. The final dance scene was a disappointment but the path to that point was strong. There was good pace. The characters weren't flat. The cast is comprised primarily of professional dancers. This isn't a musical, so you don't have to worry about cheesy, fantastical dance numbers that break out in the middle of a diner with the wait-staff joining in. If you aren't a fan of dance, pass on this movie. There won't be anything to interest you here. But to all those who do or have danced, this is a true gem, a pure joy to watch repeatedly. And an additional note, several "after school special" topics play a part in this film. The thing is, they are important to the story, as it draws you into their world, helping you understand just how different their lives are than the typical teenager. One of the most important and prevalent messages is concerning the unrealistic weight ideal for female dancers. You get to watch the struggle to live up to those expectations, because in reality, if ignored, may result in the premature end of an unrealized career. Remember, the actors are dancers, not Hollywood stars.

    Really good
but seem like a classic, all the main characters do well in the end of the movie. The best dancer quits dancing cause its isnt what she though she loved and also is very sick. Another is a girl whos amazing at dance but has a bad attitude. and then theres another who...( read more) isnt the best dancer but has the haert and does the best in the end where shes doing what she loves, at the top

Sometimes it is better to do what you want and be happy rather than what you're good at being successful but miserable.

Better than fame. Real dancers not body doubles (except for Zoe and Ilki). Set the stage for the most recent dance films.

  • August 15, 2008
This movie was described as a modern day 'fame'. Maybe that was comparing to completely different movies. I dont know much about ballet or the strict competition to get in, but this movie shows two different sides of the same gendre. Between Maureen who starves herself and is mis...( read more)erable trying to fulfill her mother's dream for her, instead of her own dreams...to Jody who has always dreamed of being a prima ballerina. The fight to get into the American Ballet Company comes with its share of ups and down and lots of scratching and biting. Its a movie of classic versus modern ballet. Its a must see for anyone who loves dancing.

  • July 2, 2008
Not high art, and very cliched, "Center Stage" is still a fun bit of fluff, and the dance sequence at the end - while virtually impossible to actually pull off live, is still stunning and fun to watch
  • June 28, 2008
