Charade

Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, George Kennedy, James Coburn, Walter Matthau

Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn star in this stylish comedy-thriller directed by Stanley Donen, very much in a Hitchcock vein. Grant plays Peter Joshua, who meets Reggie Lampert (Hepburn) in Paris and l...( read more  read more... )ater offers to help her when she discovers that her husband has been murdered. After the funeral, Reggie is summoned to the embassy and warned by agent/friend Bartholemew (Walter Matthau) that her late husband helped steal 250,000 dollars during the war and that the rest of the gang is after the money as well. When three of the men who attended her husband's funeral begin to harass her, Reggie goes to Joshua for help, at which time Joshua confesses that his name is actually Alexander Dyle, the brother of a fourth accomplice in the gold theft. The three men from the funeral are revealed to be the three other accomplices in the crime, and though she knows next to nothing of the heist, Reggie is caught in a ring of suspense as she is followed by the shadowy trio, all after the money. Apparently, the only person she can trust is Joshua/Dyle -- until Bartholomew tells Reggie that the fourth accomplice had no brother, and Joshua/Dyle reveals that he is, in fact, a crook named Adam Canfield. Now Reggie doesn't know where to turn. The musical score by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini was nominated for an Academy Award.~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

"Well, what did you expect me to say? That a pretty girl with an outrageous manner means more to an old pro like me than a quarter of a million dollars?"

Romance and suspense in Paris, as a woman is pursued by several men who want a fortune her murdered husband had stolen...( read more). Who can she trust?

Slick, sophisticated and extremely charming are the most widely used adjectives to describe Stanley Donen's Charade; and this career highlight is still a great testament to his talent, particularly in view of the Jonathan Demme remake 40 years later. Getting the right doses of romance, comedy and thrills into one picture is difficult enough, but the mixture here is nothing short of miraculous. The funeral scene is witty beyond words. Stylish flourishes abound, making even the individual elements of the film outstanding: the animated Maurice Binder titles driven by Mancini's exceptional theme music; the Paris locations and production design; Peter Stone's slyly written banter; a cast of extraordinary character players; and even Ms. Hepburn's hip Givenchy wardrobe. Donen, Grant and Hepburn really deliver and Charade, as light and satisfying as it all is, is something of a minor cinema masterpiece.

A delightfully witty romantic thriller, clearly indebted to Hitchcock's "North By Northwest" but very enjoyable in its own right. Cary Grant, though as charming as ever, is not quite on peak form here and was starting to look a little tired by this time, but Audrey Hepburn is sim...( read more)ply wonderful. Hitchcock might perhaps have squeezed a little more fun and suspense out of the story, though it is to Stanley Donen's credit that one also pauses to reflect whether "North By Northwest" could have been even better with Audrey Hepburn in it. Donen does a good job of making the twists and turns of the plot intelligible, particularly with respect to Grant's constantly shifting identity and motivation, even managing to explain a niggling hole in the plot at the very end. Excellent.

Good murder mystery starring screen legends Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It's hard not to find Charade very old fashioned, and very silly, but that's its charm. Theirs a lot to like about it, the stylish direction, the Henry Mancini score, and the chemistry between the two lead...( read more)s. But I'm a fan of modern cinema, and this and many of the Hitchcock movies, just don't cater to my taste.

It was a lot of fun both to figure out who the villain was and watch Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn interacting.

Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn's connection a hell of roller coaster ride. It's tremendously fun and exciting. Stanley Donen just takes us into a ten-folds laugh, suspense and mystery.

Some have said that Charade is the closest a movie has gotten to being a Hitchcock without actually being a Hitchcock. Brilliant comic timing, romance as well as being a wonderful thriller, Charade is a wonderful movie, with a great supporting cast and a wonderful pairing of lead...( read more) actors, it is also a modern day classic.
