Chariots of Fire Reviews and Ratings

One reason for the film's success lies in its unswerving sense of the story that it's telling. Plot details aside, this is the story of two strong personalities, Abrahams and Liddell, who are very different from each other in many ways, but united in their talent for running and ...( read more)their passionate devotion to what each feels is most important. Chariots of Fire gives us a complex, nuanced view of each of these characters; while each has certain driving characteristics (Abrahams' arrogance; Liddell's faith), these are just part of a multi-faceted personality that we get to see develop over the course of the film. Are either of the two characters "heroes"? In the conventional narrative sense, maybe not; Chariots of Fire doesn't let either of them slip into the simple outlines of being the triumphant hero (or the tragic hero either, for that matter). As the contemporary frame of Chariots of Fire reminds us, these are, and were, real people who really lived and really experienced these events; they can indeed be heroic figures, but always in the complicated, messy way that real human beings can be heroes.

Dull! If I had to watch them run one more time I would have run out of the room myself.

Chariots of Fire is a movie about 2 guys that are runners and compete in the 1924 Olympics. One is Jewish and the other a devout Christian. There's some more to this, but it's rather uninteresting and I don't feel like taking the time to talk about it.

The only reason I watched ...( read more)this film is because it somehow won the Oscar for best picture. It also won 3 other Oscars. Of the best picture-winning films I have seen I would say this is by far the worst.

This movie will make you proud to be a Christian.

This is certainly one of the blandest of the best picture winners. It's a good story with fine acting, good production values, subtly directed. But it just isn't best picture material. The period detail and flavor is commendable.

    simplemente maravillosa.

This is a good film. I haven't seen this in years but I enjoyed it. The film is about two British track athletes going to compete in the 1924 Olympics. The film has very strong characters and a great story. A great cast in this. Plus a great soundtrack to this film. Well worth a ...( read more)watch.

One of the most beautifully pure, inspiring and moving films you can ever find, with a terrific emphasis on the human soul and about the things that motivate us to achieve our dreams successfully. Truly great.

This is my all time favorite movie. The power of this masterpiece is overwhelming. It shows the heart and soul of true competition and athletes and there are not many movies like this. It is classic and the acting is superb. The cinematography is even great.

Not the most impressive of Best Pictures, but there are certainly some very good things. Great performances (enjoyed Ian Holm and Ian Charleson immensely), nice, albeit adequate direction and a resounding score (which kinda gets in the way now) make it worth watching at least on...( read more)ce. (I'll admit it's good, but it's not one I'm drawn to like some other BP's.)

And, no matter how you feel, this has got to be maybe the only mainstream film in which Christianity has not been presented in a didactic fashion. Shows that a man can be willing to sacrifice for his beliefs even when it hurts not only him, but his country.

I don't think anyone will forget that theme music once they hear it...Great movie, by the way

Unforgettable opening sequence. It always amazed me that a simple biopic about 2 runners could be so riveting. There's a fair bit of historical inaccuracy in it in the name of drama and politics, but the film certainly carrys you along. Who can forget, "They will run and not grow...( read more) weary. They will ride with wings of eagles." after seeing this film? [Isaiah 40]. It is notable that not only does the US version lack the cricket scene at the beginning of the film, it also adds an introduction to Cambridge absent in the other version, though it's a Cambridge that frankly scares the pants off me it is so full of mutants (post war injuries and all that).

fabulous story...and it's a true one! except for the theme song, the music is a bit odd for the time period.

I loved the soundtrack to this film and I was glad to watch it on Oscar Sunday. It is worthy of its' Oscars and is based on a true story. The music can be haunting and beautiful at the same time. Vangelis is a musical genius. The cast is stellar with some new faces of actors and ...( read more)actresses like Alice Krige and even Ruby Wax if you look closely. The 1924 Olympics is the climax of the film. It's still a beautiful and wonderfully entertaining and educational film to be seen. I loved the cast including Sir Ian Holm, Sir John Gielgud, and the young aspiring Olympic athletes including Brad Davis, Ian Charleson, and Ben Cross. The story is beautifully told in writing and the direction is brilliant to convey the beauty of the story. This is a feel good classic film from 1981.

  • January 9, 2009
Great storytelling of Eric Lidell's triumphant life contrasted with striving for excellence as and end in itself. Ben Cross' best performance.
