The Baker family, fathered by Tom Baker (Martin), has 12 kids and move from small-town Illinois to the big city when Tom gets his dream job. The kids are all deeply unimpressed as they loved their old house. Tom's wife Kate (Hunt) also starts another big career when her recently finished book is going to be published. Kate has to take a trip to New York to oversee the publishing and initiate a promotional tour...and leaves Tom in charge of the 12 kids. Predictably, Tom isn't fit for the task but tries his best to keep the house under control. Like most films like this, troubles begin to emerge and things go from bad to worse. Steve Martin has aged, but his performance here is surprisingly decent and bright. Impressively, the performances from all the kids are really good despite many of them being exceedingly annoying. 'Cheaper by the Dozen' had the potential to be better, but the film is still bright, charming, and supplies a number of good laughs. Followed by 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2'.
Pretty good...if you have a bunch of kids!
I love Steve Martin, big fan from back in his "wild and crazy" days on SNL. I even have the 45 (yes vinyl) of King Tut still...lol
About a man and his wife with twelve kids, the mum writes a book and has to travel around, so Dad [Steve Martin] is left alone to look after twelve kids including a pair of troublesome twins, and the nightmare child [Morgan York] a must for all comdey lovers, no bad language just an overload of laughs!
Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt are parents of 12 kids. Ooh, the possibilities. Sadly, this movie quickly turns from humorous slapstick to a Thirty Something/after school special and smothers the rather inspiring work of the younger actors. These young thespians represent themselves more like actual siblings than cutsy kids in a movie, which I found very refreshing. More of the interaction among the kids would have made this movie a terrific comedy, but Martin and Hunt make for a good combo--would love to see these two paired again in smart romance--something from Nancy Meyers, James L. Brooks or Cameron Crowe perhaps...?
Aargh! American family movie alert! Code Red! Code Red! Error, Error, Error!
This is just so typical of the family movie genre. In fact, I think the obsession with that particular, festering pustule on the face of contemporary cinema started with this film.
Piper Perabo is a blessing. Lord bless her. All the other kids are annoying and most certainly need a good smack. Hilary Duff is just plain annoying (as always). The whole family carries rigid, impassive expressions throughout the cheesy story.
Take your kids to see a Disney animation and have done.
this is nothing like "Mean Girls"!! whoever said that in the poll hasn't seen this! i actually like it! hilary duff looks normal, and the kids are annkoying!! just the way i like it lol
A great movie combining many family problems that have already been on other films into one. But one thing is left unclear, why did they stay in Chicago?
good enough but not the best... i didn't like the dad that just HAD to do everything and kept it quiet even when he should have talked... of course i loved ashton kutcher and tom welling... they are just so cute. the two of them... and also so damn hot!!!
In modern America, where the average family has 1.87 children, Tom Baker and wife Kate have decided that life is better--if not cheaper--by the dozen. The Bakers live in a small Illinois town where To...( read more )m coaches the local college football team. The family's day-to-day life is marked by equal parts love and chaos? pet-frog-landing-in-the-breakfast eggs type of chaos. When Tom is offered his dream job--coaching a squad at a large university--he and Kate uproot the family, much to the displeasure of all 12 children. At the same time, Kate learns that her memoirs are about to be published. Her agent whisks her away to New York to promote the book, leaving Tom home alone to handle the increasingly unhappy and hectic household, as well as his demanding new job. With all hell breaking loose at home, Kate on the road, and Tom's job on the line, the Baker family ultimately chooses not to have it all, but to love what they do have
Oh god ... why did I watch this? Did I think it would be good? Didn't I know that Steve Martin hasn't been funny since he was on SNL (and even then ...)? How drunk was I?
Moral = don't even bother with this moronic drivel. If you want to cause a brain hemorrhage, rent The Stupids instead ... it will do the job much quicker and let you avoid a lot of unnecessary torture.
This wasn't a horrible picture, but definetly not the best performance of Steve's or Bonnie's career. The humor was very... lame. And the little kids nothing but piss me off- they were very annoying
in the tradition of all family movies, this is one of the finest family films of all time . both steve martin and bonnie hunt are the best of players in the roles of being the quintessental parents of 12 wild and lovable children that makes the movie goers laugh out loud with pure delight. hilary duff as the fashion plate daughter blends sweetness and warmth as well as quirky humor in one. but most of all smallville heart throb tom welling blends in straightlaced serious scene that makes him more adult than his father in the film but with such diverse sexuality. ashton kucher on the other hand gives alot of slapstick as hank nora bakers boy friend its where gunner the dog bite his body parts and drags him all over the floor he starts screaming for life so hard its funny. so please dear friends i ask of you rent this family flick to watch with your family .its funny, warm hearted, and good enough for the next generation to watch for years to come.
so entertaining and funny..!! it's fun to watch with the family..
it's a typical bunch of kids acting crazy and crating chaos and everything but i still find it entertaining. yeah it is an immature and childish film but it has a very good message for family.
