Certainly the best HK triad movie I've seen. True it is not too difficult considering the number of lemons the genre created and the fact that I haven't seen that many of them anyhow. Anyway, hugely entertaining, perfect rhythm and for once one can almost believe the story.

Johnny To shows that no matter how simple a story can be, is the "how" you tell said story what makes the whole difference. The plot for the mission is nothing you haven't seen already if you are a crime/noir/HK aficionado, but To handles the whole thing in a way that makes you a...( read more)lways interested in what's going to happen next.

No need to mention the excellent cast of the film, from Anthony Wong to Francis Ng and the always solid Simon Yam. You can almost make any movie with those guys and be sure it will have a level of quality thanks to them.

Oh yeah, a hollywood remake is on the way, and before you get your hopes high just get in mind that not all HK remakes of crime thrillers are going to be made by Scorcese. So who knows what is going to become of this one.

I've yet to see a Johnny To film that I haven't really liked and this is no exception. It seems To is at the top of his game when dealing with crime stories, and the honour and dishonour amongst thieves. A great cast (who I also loved in Exiled) and a good script that veers int...( read more)o a unexpected conclusion from the first 75% of the film make this a worthy addition in To's excellent filmography. You can also see how To has grown as a filmmaker since this film, he uses cinematography much more and it seems his films are stylishly more individualistic now, but his characters are still the same, and that's a great thing.

This is an older film and it shows....

    ...mainly in the guys outfits.
    Very simple film.
Bunch of guys have a job to do and they do it well.
    That's it really.
What makes this film watchable is the effortlessness that they go about their duties and that ever so cool unsaid respect...( read more)/belief that the other fellows are as good as you are which is why you are working together.
Each bit of gunplay action is interspaced with little moments of (cheesey) guy bonding humour which thankfully not the typical 90s slapstick.
Of course some will put that against the film, labelling it as silly and pointless but to me, they serve as useful development moments in what is supposed to be an action/gangster film.

With that said, this is not as good as it the newer films.
There is a little feeling of disjointedness between the mission of the title and the little revelation/quandary set out at the end of the film that is never really resolved properly.
It would've probably been better to focus more on the problem the gang have to deal with after the mission rather than the mission itself but then that would've been a different film.

Not the best but a good bit of fun none the less.

Minimalist film-making at its best. All actors are great. The action is very precise and strategic.

great concept and cast, well crafted...but too slow. first half bored the hell out of me.

Yet another great gangster movie from the excellent Johnny To.
