great movie!! catherine zeta jones was spectacular! renee zellweger isnt my favorite actresses but she was ok. she should eat more in my opinion. i like how it was a musical yet the crime aspect made it even better.
The style and music sets it above most other musicals but the story leaves much to be desired. Side characters take away from the talent shown by the leads and Lucy Liu is too good to be used so little.
I know that the setting is supposed to be glitzy and glamorous, but it was a little too much. "Moulin Rouge" was better, but overall, this film was okay.
When my favourite local movie magazine wrote that Chicago is one of the worst best picture of all-time and they said,'How come Chicago can win,but Moulin Rouge didn't?'.Oh,please! The point is they didnt see the obvious truth that Chicago even not in the same category as Moulin Rouge, let me get this straight, the 2003's oscar nominees are Chicago,Gangs of New York,The Hours,LOTR,and The Pianist. How dare they compare Chicago winning to Moulin Rouge that even released in the different year! Whoever wrote that should be fired immediately. But no matter what they say,Chicago is one of most entertaining movie i've ever seen.Perfect in every way,Brilliant directing, beautifully acted, great music, and most importantly,Chicago will unleash you imagination to the core.A grand picture of a musical these era.Sensational!
This film was good yet a bizzare musical. Weird that all of the songs in the film are all fantasys that the characters in the film imagine. Oscar Best Picture should have gone to The Pianist or LOTR 2. Catherine Zeta Jones delivers an outstanding performance as sexy murderess Velma Kelly. John C. Reilly was brilliant in this film as Amos Hart and so was Renée Zellweger in her Oscar nominated performance as murderess Roxie Hart. Richard Gere and Queen Latifah are awesome in this film aswell. This film was nothing like I expected at all but I still enjoyed this film though. A film that deserved its place in Best Picture award but didnt deserve to win.
amazingly entertaining , a musical that made you want to sing with them & a musical that really open your imagination & it's a musical that contained comedy that made you laughed all time and insanely beautiful scenes that can be compared with Moulin Rouge! .
Me gustan los musicales pero siento que le faltó algo. No me convenció Richard Gere. Por otro lado las mujeres se lucieron, especialmente Catherine Zeta-Jones.
I was skeptical at first if I'd like this movie because I'm not big on movie-musicals. But I was grabbed by beginning to end. The story works well on screen.
An adaptation that's part showtunes and part crime story. Don't let the musical numbers fool you; the storyline is pure pulp-y entertainment. It wouldn't have been out-of-place to know that this storyline was really from an old pulp magazine like Black Mask. From the moment Catherine Zeta-Jones prances out to belt "All That Jazz," you can hear her name being inscribed onto the Oscar she would later win. Pity she never delivered another performance as fully realized, or good. Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly, and Richard Gere also deliver award worthy work, and, yet, only Gere didn't get an Oscar nomination out of that group (Latifah and Reilly giving my favorite performances in the film as the sassy lesbian prison matron and a sad sack husband). Zellweger looks the part, and sings ok, but her dancing is terrible (notice she only has one scene of actual choreography and she's off beat), but her dramatic work is divine. Props for creating a musical that features all of the musical sequences as an elaborate flight of fancy, it's an interesting concept and nicely executed.
This movie has the best song and dance sequences. I love how they have two sets when they sing to have the orig scene something to compare to. I love Velma's character. The actors were perfect for their roles.
From the opening signature song 'All that Jazz' to the energetic and stylish finale, 'Chicago' is an embodiment of entertainment for entertainment's sake. Forget an underlying subtext or a play on morals, Rob Marshall's film version of the popular stage musical exists on the assumption we *like* to watch others sweat in their misfortune - and I can't deny it - 'Chicago' is a lot of fun; devilishly exciting, menacingly outrageous. Renee Zellweger stars as wannabe stage-star Roxie Hart, fresh into prison after murdering her former lover. The true femme-fatale of the picture, however, is Catherine Zeta Jones marvellous, spot-on performance as murderess Velma Kelly - she is utterly convincing and bites into the ruthless role with a gleeful relish, setting a precedent for all future stage actresses to follow. The two female stars have great chemistry, bouncing off on each other in their desperate rises to fame and stardom, but less convincing is male lead Richard Gere. He just doesn't have the right charisma for the role of suave lawyer Billy Flynn, and his performance is inconsistent and off-key. Oscar nominated supporting stars John C.Reilly and Queen Latifah more than make up for this, he with an air of naivety and desperation, her with an edge of cunning and intelligence. Not only do the stellar cast make this film though - the directorial touches are simply astounding. Marshall combines reality with theatrical, fantasy sequences to bring all the songs to life with glitz and gusto, and the parallel narrative means we appreciate the songs as well as the somewhat thinner story. The director still manages to convey the greed of tabloid press and society's misplaced value on fame and fortune, but such interesting themes seem to take a back-seat against the lively musical numbers. 'Chicago' is basically a demonstration of cabaret and theatrics; it delivers witty dialogue, smart ideas and perfectly choreagraphed song-and-dance, and it's aimed at an audience who want little else - by the end of the film, you'll be hard pressed to find anybody who perceives the storyline as a weak link, because it's more irrelevant than frustrating.
I like that the musical is explained (I don't like musicals in which people are singing and dancing to some song without a explanation of how such an unreal world thing like that could occur) but it doesn't hold my interest.
I fell in love with this movie. I can't believe I was douche enough to miss out on it for this long. Catchy ass tunes and of coarse baby, "All that Jazz" :D
Chicago is really a great adaptation of the play. I'm not too acquainted with musicals but this film kept me on the edge of my seat. The songs are fun and outrageous, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger are both astonishing in their own parts and the story was well developed. It was a great surprise!
One of my faves. Renee Zellweger plays the aspirational dumb blonde very well. Catherine Zeta Jones... hmm I don't know about her. In some ways she's an amazing actor but confuses me with her intensity. Richard Gere is a horrible singer lol. However this movie is simply amazing, and I love the songs.
Marshall and all the casts really know what they're doing. I always a fond of musical, noted Moulin Rouge and Dreamgirls. Zeta Jones really moved me and she really deserved an Oscar for it. Zellweger, not a fan, but her acting was impressive. The most important is they got chemistry between the characters so it lead me to the amusement. The script was brilliant, the music is catchy and unforgettable. By the way, about The Oscar, I still think that there's kind of luck factor because Chicago doesn't have to nailed A Beautiful Mind, like Rouge! did.
GREAT REMAKE.. THOUGHT THE ORGINAL WAS NOT A MUSICAL AND IT STARTED GINGER ROGERS... I JUST LOVED THIS MUSICAL.. MY GAL PALS AN MYSELF DO CELL BLOCK TANGO AN KARAOKE
